    hunting alaska

I have a conference for work in Anchorage in October and am wondering what my odds might be of getting to do some extra curricular activity , aka hunting, while I am there. If anyone knows where I might start looking for information I would appreciate the advice. I know several members have been and/or talked about hunting in Alaska. thanks, twoguns

    What Units???

my cousin works for game and fish and is currently trapping and tracking elk and deer populations around munds park area and he had a coues buck in his trap earlier this spring...cool thing was that the buck lost both antlers in the cage, so he got a sweet set for his collection.

    String stretching?

no matter what string you buy it will stretch for a while, even the ones that say they dont stretch, they will. might also make sure your limbs are still tightened to where they were when you started. friend of mine had trouble with his limbs staying at the right poundage. just dont buy a new string or you will be right back where you started and out 5o bucks.

    Nov. Archery Bull

my family lived in young for 10 years, i know some great places for elk. send me a pm. have around 35 tree stands in unit 23..
  8. Bass, I am 90% sure i know those bucks, especially the big one. i missed him at 25 yards with a thunderhead 125 on opening morning last year. he is huge. i was up there on sunday and saw a herd of 4, but not the big one. anyway, if we are talking about the same group, great, and if we are not, even better. i cant wait for sept. 1. also, i was lucky enough to draw a 6a carp rifle tag, so asuming he survives archery season again, i might get another chance at him. cool video. next time i go look for them, i will be sure to take my video camera so we can compare. twoguns

    Coues mount?

I live in Camp Verde and was able to get onto my new property and house today. The house was built in 1944, and the same family has lived there since it was built. In an out building I found mixed in with tons of other crap that had accumulated over the years a set of coues horns mounted on a board. Kinda strange how it was done, but if you could only see the rest of the place, it fit right. Anyway, I placed my tape measure next to the horns and took a couple pics before the battery on my camera died, so I could not get pictures with the tape open, but it is a full size 25' tape. pretty cool find anyway, any idea what it might score? one more picture one more picture

    Kachina Bulls

Those bulls at kachina are awesome. i have had the privilege of seeing them quite a few times, in fact, last year, i chased a couple of them during archery season. had a great time, just couldn't bring home the elk bacon... it is good to know they are back this year. hope i can draw another tag this year.

    unit 23

my folks used to live in young, and we spent a lot of time out in the woods around that area and we only ever saw one whitetail in about 8 years. my cousin works for the game and fish dept., and last year spent some time trapping elk and deer to collar in the area above the trout farm somewhere. He said he saw some really good whitetail in that area, even trapped a few. now that i think about it, I hope that is in unit 23.... anyway, next time i talk to him i will ask for better info....
  20. who would have thought elk would be so curious about a trail camera, but i keep getting the same curious looks from some bewildered youngsters.
  21. Ron, amazingly similar story....my dad picked up my camera yesterday for me, it had been out about 4 weeks or so, and took a few good pictures. my flash is not strong enough obviously, so i will have to set my camera differently next time. anyway, your pictures are awesome. here are some pics my camera had.

    Coues mount?

Josh Epperson came over today and looked at the horns I found, and he believes they are eastern whitetail horns... he is probably right, he thought the skull plate was too thick. i will try to find out from the family that used to live there what the story is behind them.

    Waiting your turn

I agree with much of what has been said, however I think that there are a lot of issues that come up when you talk about a waiting period and those with the most bonus points getting the tags. While I agree with both of those suggestions and think they would help all hunters in more ways than one, I wonder how do you work out the fact that there are several units in the state that are primo bull elk units, like 9 or 10, and other units that are not so great to hunt. If i want to apply for one of these units year after year, I have to expect to wait longer for a tag than someone applying for a different unit. It would all depend on the draw odds for the tags each person applies for. Personally, I drew an archery bull tag last year, and put in for mostly cow hunts except for my first choice. Fortunately, there are several places left with very good draw odds for 1st and 2nd choice cow hunts, so at this point will take what I can get.

    amazing elk horns

went shed hunting today and got skunked, but did get to see about 50 elk, saw two spikes in velvet. it was a beautiful day and just enjoyed getting out with dad. since i dont have any of my own shed pics to post yet, here are two pics i found and thought i would post. Pierre LeMieux writes, "I couldn't help sharing this photo of friend, Jackie Serfass, and her once in a lifetime find. Jackie came across this 394 B&C nontypical bull while working in the Arizona backcountry. Jackie is from Michigan and really had no idea what she had on her hands until she brought the monster back to civilization. With crowds gathering wherever she brings the antlers, I think she is starting to realize just what a rare trophy she has." Does that look like something from prehistoric days or what?!? Look at that mass!!
