    6B Arizona Mule Deer hunt

I think the area around turkey butte is good for deer. You may see both species. It is really nice area.
  3. I have to believe this has been talked about before, but what advice would anyone share on flying with a rifle? What cases are worth the money? Locks? Things not to do? Im flying back to AZ to go to Mexico in January and have not gone through this before. thanks, Twoguns
  4. Great info. I am looking at the Pelican 1750 right now. It’s expensive but looks like it’s solid. And I’ve heard differing thoughts on the ammo. It should be in its original box inside the case with the rifle? Or it should be separate?

Thanks for the Memories Buddy! (pic heavy)

Very cool. Makes me think of an old song... https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5tdj2_KSGJ0
  6. I brought this up on here during the comment phase of the process. No one really seemed to care, but living in the verde valley, there is a ton of hunting to do along the Verde river...or there was.

    Leica LRF 1200 Range Finder

Thanks RR, that’s what I was guessing. I really like Leicas, but need to get one that can get a little farther out.

    Leica LRF 1200 Range Finder

RR, what’s the true effective range of this RF on deer/elk? I’m looking for one to pick up for long range shooting. Thanks

    Spring leftovers list is up

So someone enlighten me how it is that I drew my 2nd choice Javi tag and there are 80+ left over of my first choice?
  10. Went out last Friday morning. Walked up on a couple bulls feeding at 30 yards. About 5:30 am and I just happened to walk up on these clueless bulls. I could hear them chewing. I think I could have stayed there all day watching. So cool. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxwzOIZvuBo Glassed up a pretty good Coues at about 400 yards. Would love to hear any thoughts on what he might score. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99hzzivl_xk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NzzgeaN3RI I drew the 6A Nov. tag. Getting excited.

    G&F Proposed Rule Changes

In addition, the Commission and Department have received a number of complaints about persons archery hunting near their private property. The Commission proposes to amend the rule to prohibit the discharge of hybrid device, arrow, or bolt while taking wildlife within one-fourth mile of an occupied farmhouse or other residence, cabin, lodge or building without permission of the owner or resident, to increase consistency between statute and rules. This language mirrors statutory language under A.R.S. § 17-309, which prohibits a person from discharging a firearm while taking wildlife within one-fourth mile of an occupied farmhouse or other residence, cabin, lodge, or building without permission of the owner or resident. This change is in response to customer comments received by the Department. In addition, the Commission is aware confusion exists as to what distance constitutes "one-fourth mile" and "one-half mile." The Commission proposes to clarify this distance by also referencing this distance in yards (440 or 880, as applicable) to reduce regulatory uncertainty. This change is in response to customer comments received by the Department
  13. As the population increases the percentage of idiots increases at a faster rate. Thus the need for more idiot laws. Bad for road hunters and people afraid of the deep woods. How about for those of us that live near the verde river and hunt elk, deer, javelina, migratory birds, and bowfish? There are not many places that you can get 1/4 mike from a residence. This would outlaw all that hunting, even though it is safe and most private property owners dont care, or are hunters themselves. This is not an idiot law proposal.
  14. If I m reading this right, this is not good... Under A.R.S. § 17-309(A)(4), it is unlawful to discharge a firearm while taking wildlife within one-fourth mile of an occupied farmhouse or other residence, cabin, lodge or building without permission of the owner or resident. Under R12-4-303(A)(3)(h), it is unlawful to discharge a pneumatic weapon .30 caliber or larger while taking wildlife within one-fourth mile of an occupied farmhouse or other residence, cabin, lodge or building without permission of the owner or resident. In addition, the Commission is aware of instances where a hunter who lives on the edge of a municipal boundary is unable to archery hunt on his own property because Commission Order closes areas within one-fourth mile of an occupied residence. For example, a hunter who lives on the edge of a forest boundary and who is miles away from the nearest residence is unable to archery hunt on their own property because of the location of their own home. I read it to say that we will not be allowed to archery hunt within 440 yards of residences without their permission. If so, all of us that love hunting along the verde river for birds, javelina, deer and elk are screwed. Somebody tell me I'm wrong... I emailed AZGFD and hope to hear back from them. The only reasoning stated is that some people have complained. Seems like a lot of us will be punished to alleviate the complaining.
  15. So if this goes into effect, imagine the phone calls to game and fish... If you walk within 1/4 mile of private property, carrying your bow, and someone calls it in that you are hunting inside of 1/4 mile, does anyone believe they won't get a ticket? Then, it will be off to court to prove your innocence. Because obviously it won't stop people from complaining to the department. Anti-hunters will always complain, and if AZGFD starts giving away hunting privileges just for appeasement, we are off the slippery slope as it were.
  16. Ya, rather ironic that in metro units they have this rule...

    Coues 6A. First Scouting

You were in a good area, maybe just bad luck. I was up there this morning on the north side of stoneman lake road at the head of rattlesnake. Didn't glass up any coupes but had 4 of them inside of 100 yards run by me, including a nice buck. Until you sit the same spot multiple times you can't know what is around.

First Time Hunting have a Tag for 6A

I have the same tag and spend a lot of time in 6a. You are in good country around stoneman lake. There are white tails all over, so glassing from a good vantage point is key. Many guys will get up high and just stay behind the glass all day as WT are active a lot of the day. They like to go to water in the middle of the day, so watch the weather and find where they're drinking. I will be doing some scouting this fall so let me know when you are coming up and maybe we can team up.

    Adoption

So many great posts, and great info. It is so worth doing, either fostering or adopting. Life changing in so many good ways. But $1200 in trigger locks...at $12.99 each... I need to buy more guns! Holy crap you must have an armory! The homestudy is a pain, especially since it takes so long. And we had a great experience with catholic social services in our area as well.

    Adoption

Good for you guys thinking about adoption. I hope you can go through with it. I would encourage you to go the foster/adopt route as there are about 18,000 foster kids in AZ right now. There is a huge need for adoptive families. My wife and I have 2 biological children, and 4 adopted children, with one more in the works. Our first three we adopted through foster care, which we did for 7 years. There might not be anything more challenging and rewarding at the same time. If you adopt through fostering, costs are covered by the state. Also, the kids get a monthly adoption subsidy until they turn 18, and free health care. They also get help paying for college. If you go straight adoption, the costs are on you to cover. Here is a link to my wife's blog if you want to see what she has written about. A lot of it has to do with our international adoption. http://www.ransomforisrael.com Here is a link to a segment Fox10 News did on our family. http://www.fox10phoenix.com/news/arizona-news/215456447-story We are very active in helping other families adopt, so if you would like to hear our experiences, or get help navigating the system, let me know.

    Dog fence alternatives

The dog fence with the wire works great. You could always Bury some wire around a smaller part of your yard. That might be easier than trying to run wire around 6 acres.
