I am not a gay black man with a white husband. Yet, I am Santa Claus at my house. Ask my 15, 26, and 30 year old kids. They will all tell you I bring the gifts.

Hornady ELD-X .284 150gr.
lancetkenyon replied to 10Turkeys's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
1:10" is the recommended MINIMUM twist rate. A 1:8" to 1:10" will spin them just fine. Should get some good speed out of the 150s. -
Those were some healthy coyotes....

Just the charging for work he did not perform. No missing or broken parts (that I knew of at the time). My first "custom" rifle.

Better to go ahead and true everything up while they have it apart. Plus new recoil lug, bed the stock, time and chamber the barrel, crown, etc. Too bad the gunsmith that built my .25-06AI isn't around any more. He would spin a new barrel on without truing the receiver for you....of course, you would still have to PAY for him to true it, he just would not do the work. Without truing the action, you would save about $250-350. But it does help.

We have shot javis from 18 to 250+ yards with a AR pushing the 69 SMK, and none went more than 30 yards. I would think a 9mm from a carbine would be plenty for shots out to 150 or so with a good bullet.

I have squirrel hunted during other hunts, like rifle deer, rifle cow, rifle bull hunts. Public lands, public access, every has a right to be there. While I would try and respect other hunters, I can't expect to have the unit to myself. No different than the influx of cow elk hunters coming in the last 2-3 days of late rifle bull season and start scouting. Or other bull hunters boogering up your plans during your own bull hunt.

On my bucket list, seriously. In would absolutely LOVE to do that. -
Seekins 20 MOA alloy base and Hawkins rings. The only thing is you have to make sure the top strap is perfectly level with the rifle and the scope/reticle. The 3-15 will not be underpowered at long range hunting distances with that round. I run a 3-15 Premier on mine, and it is plenty for shots on game sized targets out to 1300+. Far beyond where your hunting rounds will be shot. Yet still enough for a refined hold for a 3" group at 926 yards. The added 3x on top for the 18x would not hurt. But the lower 3x @ close range gives you more FOV. All preference here. I don't own either scope, so can't comment on features and quality.

Troubleshooting an accuracy problem
lancetkenyon replied to D4HighDesert's topic in Long Range Shooting
Wow all that has to be perfect? I would guess that 90% of the people cant and shouldnt be doing it. Any and all of those can and will make a difference. Get half of them, the equipment possibles, corrected, and that leaves shooter input issues. Correct half of those or more, and stretch it out. To make first round hits a long ways out takes consistency. To get accurate impacts a long ways out (600-1400+) takes consistency, The key to long range accuracy. I have seen people make a marginal 1st round hit, then fail to put shots 2/3/4 into an animal as an anchor, and away the game goes, never to be seen again. -
Troubleshooting an accuracy problem

Shooting position differences Recoil management Spin drift Cheek weld Sympathetic movement or rifle torque during trigger pull Grip on stock Zero imperfection (1/4" @ 100 = 1" @ 400) Lack of loading bipod Rifle not level/plumb Reticle in scope not true vertical Tracking not true in turrets/reticle shift during dialing -
Just got a new set of Cooper S/T MAXX on a 2500 Dodge work truck. The Cooper ATP & Cooper AT/3 did not hold up well. 15-20K was all, and they were tore up from the floor up. I have had BFG MT KM on my F250 for 11.5 years. They last about 30-35K before they tend to separate. But Discount always takes care of me. I bought the first 4, and have paid for 2 more in 11 years. DTC has bought the other 13-14 that needed replaced in 130k+. Not a bad deal.

I love my Leica 1600B. Small, lightweight, fast, very accurate. I have ranged game and rocks out past 1800 with them. Ranges within 1 yard of the G7 out to 1600+. I do not use the ballistic info from it though. I get temp, look angle, baro pressure and range, and input into Shooter on my phone for 1st round hits a long ways out.

223 factory loads??(pics pg. 3)
lancetkenyon replied to BeardownAZ's topic in Predator Hunting and Trapping
I can tell you, a 230 Berger Hybrid from a .300RUM @ 1365 yards will kill a coyote dead quickly. Almost got a double, but the winds must have just eased a bit for the 2nd yote. Missed him by about 6" behind his tail when the winds died per my spotter. 8.1MIL of elevation, 2MIL of wind hold. No photos, as I was not climbing up the east side of Sitgreaves to retrieve a coyote. -
Man, that 28ga is crying out to me....... Lead me not into temptation....

Now go verify at distance. I have seen great 100 yard groups open up like crazy at 400-800. It is rare, but it does happen. Now is the time to verify that is not the case. Not when shooting at a distant elk.
-
Depends on the load in the pack. I have not found it overly tight for a scoped rifle, even with large objective heavy contour/stock combos. Just won't fit with a bipod attached.

That smile says it all! Great job. Being somewhat jaded, and shooting seriously about 90% of weekends, and well over 2500 centerfire rifle rounds this year, it is mindboggling how many people do not prepare for a hunt by shooting in real world conditions and verifying zero and ballistics. But not everyone has the means, opportunity and drive to ensure this aspect of a hunt. A lot of guy get a gun, get a scope, get it bore sighted, buy a box of ammo and go hunting without even firing a shot. Those are all the pick up racks we find over the next year.

Best longrange rifle out of the box < $1000
lancetkenyon replied to Hanksaiditbest's topic in Long Range Shooting
Honestly, as much as I dislike Savage rifles for the fit and feel, the 111 LRH (Long Range Hunter) is an amazing shooting rifle. I have shot behind several, and all are top notch in the accuracy department. Being a Remington fanboy, hard to beat a Sendero or 700 LR too. -
I never lap quality rings. Every scope I own now sits in Seekins rings, and I have never gotten a ring mark on a scope from them when torqued properly. Some other rings I would own trust for top tier optics would be American Rifle Co. and Badger Ordinance.

Yes, far right. I only have one bigger, and it was back When I was poor, so it is just a plaque mount.

Got Taylor's buck back today and into the bachelor herd.

Sounds like a very safe plan to me. -
Look at sites like here and www.snipershide.com for used higher quality rings. Warne and Weaver tactical are decent.

7W wasn't any better. Super tough year. The 2 guys I was with literally had 0 opportunities for shots at any bull. We only saw 6 total bulls. 5 were good bulls, 1 spike. All bulls were glassed up at 2+ miles, and all but out of reach at getting close enough. Last year we saw 47 bulls...
