Project "Long Range Loaner" Load Development
lancetkenyon replied to lancetkenyon's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
This thread has laid in obscurity for a while. I worked up a pretty darn good load with some 168 SMKs to start with. I decided to keep the 6-24 Burris Black Diamond on it for now. This is a factory loaded round that came with the rifle that I pulled apart. This is a fired brass that came with the gun. The fired factory brass showed a sign of pressure with an ejector mark. Factory fired brass was at max length So I trimmed all to .010" below max length Sized, cleaned, trimmed, chamfered, primer pockets uniformed, and annealed, ready to load. I have a ladder test loaded up with some RL23 & 175 ELD-X and ready to go shoot once I get caught up on some other reloading stuff I have going on. -
General Purpose/ Back up Rifle

I highly doubt you will find a production rifle with a fast twist .277 barrrel. Almost all have a 1:10" twist. Mannliicher-Schoenauer has a 1:9" & Husqvarna has a 1:9.5". I think everything else is 1:10" from a factory. You would want a 1:8" for the 170 EOL Hunter, and unfortunately, I think Matrix discontinued the .277 165gr. -
While I have not adjusted any of the turrets, I think the ballistic turret has the 3 rings that you set when you find your own zero and your correct dial for 4 ranges. Zero distance, and then 3 other distances, like green=300, yellow=400, red=500. The turret rings align to show you when you at that distance. Like a yardage marker or custom turret, but is adjustable by the shooter for the load used. I could be totally wrong though. That is my take on them.

Don't overlook .280 Rem/7RM/7SAUM. Not obnoxious to shoot without a brake, great bullet selections in the .284/7mm offerings, more oomph than a .270, better BC than the both, you can get factory loads, plenty for elk sized game out to 500. -

My daughter had a 12AE late hunt last year. Weather and snow play a major role. We saw bucks all over. Low and high.

Phoenix Custom Rifles has done my bedding/stock work in about a 2 week turnaround when they are busy, and 1 week when they are not busy.

You must drink....a lot. Been there a few times, along with Arrowhead Grill, my favorite. Usually for my wife and I, we are out about $130/140 with tip. No alcohol though. Went with my brother and SIL, and it was about $320 with a couple drinks.

We had two black dobies when my older daughter was a baby. She was about 9 months, they were 8 weeks. Put them in the playpen together. Those dogs were sloop protective of her, they would not let anyone near her but my wife and I. Not grandparents, friends, no one. They would get between her and other people and block her out form going to anyone. Had them for about 8 years, then one got lost during a big storm that blew my fence down. Had the other for about 3 more years. Loved those mutts.

Always One To Tinker... .300RUM w. 230 Hybrids?

3.875+/-" COAL. I know I have to back them off at least .0500" to fit in the Wyatt's box I ordered @ 3.825". But I always ladder test on the lands. -
I know. I was just mess in my around since the photo is basically a silhouette.

I have a great load worked up in my ride for them. They fly fantastic. I almost had Taylor use them last year on her elk hunt. I know a guy in Montana who uses them on elk with great results. -
Looks like a black Doby to me...

Always One To Tinker... .300RUM w. 230 Hybrids?

Went out on some other load development, and got my .300RUM some range time this morning with some very promising results. Shooting some charge weight testing loads at 200. Good speeds too. Just a hint of pressure at the top load with the bullet touching the lands. Hoping tonreduce pressure once I get better headspacing with fire formed brass and a bit of jump to lands. Speeds were between 3042 and 3070 across 5 loads. Tough to see through the spotter, but cold bore was dead on, about 1/4" high at 200. First 3 shots -
Hands down, the Magnetospeed is what I would buy if I were looking. The Ohler 35 is a good unit too. And the LabRadar is awesome, but pricey. All that being said, I use a fairly cheap Chrony unit, but I just used mine to get close, and then verify drops and true my ballistics with LR confirmation.

Definitely a sign of pressure, but these are pretty minor, and the only sign it showed. I have seen far worse from factory loads. These are new brass, so headspace has not been refined to my chamber. The excessive headspace of factory new brass, in this case a .016" short shoulder, definitely causes some pressure too. I doubt I would see the same ejector mark using fire formed brass with a .002" shoulder bump and the same charge weight and seating depth. I also do all of my ladder testing with the bullet touching the lands, which also increases pressure. I do this so I know I am at the absolute max for pressure, with the possible exception of using a powder that is temp sensitive, and doing load development at low ambient temps, then going shooting with a 50 degree higher temp. Basically, stacking a lot of the possible causes of pressure, to ensure once load development is complete, this will not be an issue in the future. But I do want to work in the higher node to wring all the speed I can get out of it. I have a light load for the rifle already using a 210 HVLD @ 2960. So these will be strictly for killing stuff. There are several signs of pressure, from mild to holy crap! Excessive speed, excessive recoil, hard extraction/sticky bolt lift, case head swipes, ejector marks, bent case head rims, flattened or cratered primers, pierced primers, soot around the primer pocket, blown primers, loose primer pockets when re-priming if low round count on brass, and in extreme cases, case head separation, cracked case walls, ruptured cases, ruptured actions, etc. Here are a few examples: Bad ejector mark with brass flow Case head swipe Various severities of flattened primers Cratered primer
