Better. Nightforce are decent rings and bases. For a 50mm objective scope, unless you have a straight taper 1.25" barrel, the .92" will clear bell housing to barrel profile up to Heavy Varmint or Sendero just fine. Including sun shade & scope caps. Here is a great tool to check clearance. http://www.mil-rad.com/scope_ring_calculator Here is a photo of my 50mm objective scope w. caps, with 1" high 34mm rings on a #3 tapered barrel w. 20 MOA Picatinny With 56mm objective on .92" medium rings on same rifle Here is 50mm objective scope w. cap, 1" high 30mm rings on a Remington Varmint taper w. 20 MOA Picatinny Here is a 56mm objective, with .92" medium 34mm rings on a Rem Sendero taper w. 20 MOA Picatinny Here is a 56mm objective w. 2.5" sunshade and caps, with 1" high 34mm rings, on a Rem Sendero taper w. 20 MOA Picatinny Hard to see, but 56mm objective w. caps, 1" high 34mm rings, on Rem Varmint taper w. 20 MOA Picatinny

260 Rem or 6.5 creedmoore???
lancetkenyon replied to lionhunter's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I have taken my 6.5 SLR (uses a .243 or .260 case necked up and changes shoulder/neck design) out to 1771 on an 18x12" steel. I could hear the ring clearly. 1370 is easy with the round. I hope to get a chance at antelope or deer this year, and 800 yards would be my personal limit with it. -
I was in Tucson working for Pima County and a PCSO station that day. It was spooky. That whack job needs to be raped half to death....twice.

260 Rem or 6.5 creedmoore???
lancetkenyon replied to lionhunter's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
What if hypothetically, you could get 2950fps out of a 140 grain bullet with the .260 Rem? Would that make the .260 a viable option? That is nearly .270 Win velocities for the same weight bullet. Something to think about. But let me take a guess....your next elk rifle would be a .338 Lapua. Just messing with you Lark. -

Phoenix Custom Rifles has always treated me very well. Amazing rifles, amazing accuracy, quick turnaround time, good pricing. I usually know exactly what I want and go in with a rock solid game plan. -
260 Rem or 6.5 creedmoore???
lancetkenyon replied to lionhunter's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Main plans for the shooting volume would help decide. No way would I run a 6.5 SAUM if I planned on doing a LOT of shooting. But it would be extremely hard to beat for a hunting rifle. Recoil sensitive? 6.5 Creed, then .260 Rem. Much more recoil with a 6.5 SAUM. Any of them will get you shooting on paper or steel to 1000 easily. Throw game in the mix, and you better get some more velocity to push the heavies to retain energy past 800 or so. What do you plan to hunt with it? Varmints & medium sized big game? 6.5 Creed or .260 Rem would be plenty of gun out to 800 yards. If you want to push them further, or shoot at elk too, a 6.5 SAUM will get you a lot more energy. 2800-2900+ are reasonable expectations pushing a 140 from the 6.5 Creed or .260 Rem. 3100+ is attainable with the 6.5 SAUM. Want available factory ammo? 6.5 Creed and .260 Rem. With the .260 Rem having more brands, bullet weights and types available. If you want to shoot rounds someone else made, the 6.5 SAUM only has 1 factory loading that I think might be available, Copper Creek, and they are pricey. Components: Brass for the .260 is available from many manufacturers. 6.5 Creed is a lot harder to find. 6.5 SAUM is either bought from a very limited number of suppliers when available, or made by the reloader. Powder is readily available from numerous sources. Bullets are the same. Powder charges are similar between the 6.5 Creed and .260 Rem. H4350 is the most common, and both are anywhere between 41.5-43.5. The 6.5 SAUM uses slower burning mag powders at much higher charge weights. So more powder consumption. Barrel life. I know you read about 2500 rounds from a 6.5 SAUM, but that does not take into account setting it back and rechambering to freshen up the throat. The .260 Rem and 6.5 Creed will shoot the same, with no barrel work needed in between. There are some other cool cartridges out there in the 6.5 realm that are great options if you hand load and like something a little different. 6.5x47 Lapua 6.5 SLR (I love mine) .260 Ackley Imp. 40° 6.5-06 6.5-06 Ackley Imp. 6.5x55 Swede 6.5-.257 Roberts 6.5 4S 6.5 Sherman Short Mag .264 WM 6.5 STW etc. -
I would like to have been there too....but I had to work.

Kind of a late start in the year for an upgrade to my elk rifle that my daughter will be using this year, but I was delayed on receiving the barrel I had ordered from Rock Creek that I won in a tournament. Not Rock Creek's fault, but it went missing from UPS in Illinois somewhere, and was never recovered. Anyway, my .300RUM was a pretty stock Rem 700 BDL SS for a long time. I had installed a KDF muzzle brake on it, and upgraded the stock to an H&S Precision. Stock barrel only has about 200 rounds down it, but I figured a free barrel is worth installing on something I will probably never get rid of. I just received the Rock Creek blank this weekend. Rem. Sendero contour 29" length 5R 1 in 10" twist .308" Spiral fluted It will be chambered in .300RUM again and throated to run 210-230 Bergers and finished at 27-28". I am having Phoenix Custom Rifles do the work. I am also doing: New recoil lug True bolt and action Bedding the stock and free floating to new barrel contour Badger Thruster muzzle brake contoured to barrel New bolt knob I might install a new trigger down the line, but the stock one is set at 3#, so it is nice as it is. That looks like a big hole....

A gun safe, 4 mean butt dogs, a wife with a .45ACP, the nosiest neighbor you will ever meet who never leaves her property, and a very fast response time by the PD.....after they hear shots fired. -
Finalized my load development today. Went out with a few guns to sight in, finish load development, and just get some time behind the guns. Now all I have to do is draw an elk tag!!! Shot everything at 200 today. Now I need to go stretch its legs and see what these will do out to 300-1700+ at my desert spot. Here is my full power load, 215 Hybrid @ 3100fps. Right at .650" @ 200 yards. Here are my light loads for Taylor to shoot. 210 HVLD @ 2956fps. Just under 1/2" @ 200.

7mm Rem Mag Memorial Build
lancetkenyon replied to lancetkenyon's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I think I finalized my loads finally. Went out today with the new S&B 3-20x50 mounted up, sighted it in very easily as tracking is perfect. I only shot at 200 today, but I think I am good on load development (except I might be getting some 175 NABLRs to try out too). Brown Santa brought me a present this week. Locking turrets, especially windage, will be nice on a hunting rig that rides in a pack a lot. Mounted up in Badger Ordinance "Max 50" rings on a Seekins 20MOA Picatinny rail, Vortex Lowpro level, & Tenebraex covers Shooting at 200 yards today These are the 180 Hybrids @ 2975fps, 1" orange dot, so about 3/4" 3 shot group, or about .375moa. (These were targets left by the previous shooter, so the black dot is not covering my shot). These are the 183 SMKs at 2975fps and 180 Hybrid light loads at 2860fps for my kids to shoot. I shot these two groups about 2 hours apart, but pretty similar results. Not exactly sure why they are stringing a bit, but both groups do it. Not bad @ 200, about 3/4" group, or .375MOA. Got home and took a couple family photos. Front to Back: 7Rem Mag, .25-06 AI, 6.5 SLR, .300RUM. L-R: 6.5 SLR w. 140 HVLD, .25-06 AI w. 115 HVLD, 7Rem Mag w. 183 SMK, .300RUM w. 215 Hybrid -

That would be interesting to know if you can bring it back. I recently found out that I can't bring any turkey meat back from my Goulds hunt next month unless it is cooked and has a wing attached. So are you going o roast it with the wing sticking out of the oven??? -
Any particular brand you want, or want to stay away from?

My dogs know key words and sight commands too. And the new pups take the cues from the older boys, and have learned them too. Walk to the gun cabinet? Dogs go nuts. Get any gun out, or gun case? Dogs go raped ape crazy. "Bird", "dove", "hunt", "find"? Dogs go into search mode. "Feed" or "hungry"? Dogs go nuts and immediately head out the doggie door and one keeps vigilant watch with his head stuck inside. Wear camo? Dogs start to vibrate. If I look up? Dogs go into aerial search mode. Grab keys and go into the back yard? Dogs know I am heading to the arena and go nuts. Head to my truck and leave the carport door open? Dog all stand inside the door and vibrate. Put a sheet on my back seat? Dogs go nuts at the door. -
