A lot of us were out HUNTING or helping g others that were out hunting. Better use of my time than a movie, even though it would be cool if I wasn't out in the woods.

    Sold please delete

Should be around 2lbs 9oz if it has the full length aluminum bedding block. Great stock at a great price.
  3. The Verde camo works really well up north, from the sage, to rocks, to pines & junipers. Elk won't even see you at 5'......seriously. I will post video of that encounter later. AWESOME!

    28 Nosler

I think the 28 Nosler is just begging to use the 195 HVLD. It would definitely be an elk hammer. Same with the other high capacity 7s. 7RUM, 7STW, 7 Dakota, etc. The 26 Nosler is similar, but a 160 6.5 bullet would be plenty for elk at fairly long range. Yet more friendly for deer sized game in my opinion. I am wondering when the 30 or 33 Nosler will come into play. With the RUM crowds jumping on the 300RUM and 338 Edge, Nosler would be crazy to not expedite these rounds. But they are nothing that is basically not out there already in a wildcat. Just the availability of factory Nosler Brass would make them more available to the general public.

New rifle caliber choice? You tell me!

Exactly. Joel said with easy to find reloading supplies. I think they would be good candidates for a LR hunting rig if you are willing to foot the bill for custom stuff. My next build will be a lightweight mountain rifle for shots 700 and under. I will be building a 7MM RSAUM. If Joel wants to add some info for his build, I could narrow it down. If the OP is not worried about barrel life, 7 RUM with a heavy contour 1 in 8" twist barrel w. brake, pushing a 175-195 bullet. If Joel wants a lighter weight carry rifle, I would do a 7MM RM w. 1 in 8 or 9" twist barrel. Shoot a 165-180 grain bullet.

New rifle caliber choice? You tell me!

For an all-around LR hunting rifle, with enough for elk, but not way too much for Coues, you are probably in the 6.5mm to .308 caliber range. Here would be my choices: 6.5mm: .260 Rem (or Ackley) 6.5-06 (or Ackley) 6.5-.284 .264 WM 6.5 STW 7MM: .284 Win .280 Rem (or Ackley) 7MM RSAUM (possibly my next build) 7MM WSM (possibly my next build ) 7MM RM 7MM Weatherby 7MM STW 7MM RUM .308: .300 WM .300 Weatherby .300 RUM .30-378 Weatherby

    7W snow update

Nothing here yet. Hiking our butts off. Seen cows, no shooters bulls. After seeing 18 big 6x6s, including the bull I have on video from a few months ago, on Thanksgiving Day, they all went underground.

    Clothing for Dec.

I have heard the Darwin Awards are tough to get into, but good luck at getting a nomination. Cold January rain storms without rain gear while out hunting all day might just get you in the running.

    Best az backcountry jacket.

I'm 5'7", 153#. I am up on a cold (18-36°), windy (15-40mph) elk scouting trip right now, sitting under a tree, glassing as I type this. I just got a medium Kuiu Teton soft shell which fits great with a base layer and two long sleeve shirts under, and a large Kuiu Guide DCS jacket over, with the Kuiu rain pants (don't remember model) over jeans. The only thing that has gotten cold in 2 days are my finger tips and nose. Fit is great. Not too tight, but I could Bowhunt with it all on if I needed to.

    7W snow update

I will more than likely be in a silver 4 door Jeep Wrangler Rubicon now. My son-in-law is letting me take it up for the hunt. So once I get an elk or two down, THEN you can look for my black F250.

    Finding correct chart...

First, lets get some terminology straightened out. Sorry, not trying to be a jerk. "DOPE" = Data On Previous Engagements. Meaning what you have learned about your trajectory at various conditions. Figuring out your drop for YOUR rifle is done by exactly what you have been doing, shooting it, then adjusting a ballistics program to match what you have observed. Great start. Too many people think they can look at a program and go out and shoot 500-1000 yards. Most ballistics programs are set up to true your velocity, BC, etc. to make your load and drops more predictable. Sierra is pretty good about the BC, but you have to realize the BC is based on velocity, so when the bullet starts to slow, the BC changes along with it. Here are a few items that would really help with your data . Which Sierra 165 gr. you are shooting? Looks like it is probably the 165 SBT Game King? According to "Shooter", the 165 SBT Game King has an average BC of .416 per Bryan Litz. (.404 2400+fps, .409 1600-2400, .419 0-1600). Muzzle velocity? Without shooting through a chronograph to get you close, you really have to play with numbers to figure out your velocity. Shooting at various distances would help a lot with truing your ballistics program by inputting actual drops at known distances. But a chrono only gets you a starting point, you need to shoot and record drops to ensure a proper drop chart. Conditions you were shooting in? Conditions of initial zero? Varying conditions can play a big role in ballistics. Elevation, barometric pressure, temps, humidity, etc. Gun set-up? Scope height? Barrel twist? Zero yardage (or POI at 100)? I think WampusCat is close in his velocity range with doing some quick calculations. I think probably closer to the top end, but without a lot more info from you, it is nearly impossible to start making an educated guess.

    barrel question

Bartlein is absolutely top tier. I would most definitely keep it. I have a Bartlein 5R on my 6.5 SLR that has shot a sub-.1" 3-shot 100 yard group. I also have a Rock Creek 5R on my .300RUM. It shoots amazing as well. My next build will be a Bartlein 5R again. 5R are supposed to not distort the bullet as much as a 4 (or6) groove barrel, since the lands and grooves are not directly across from each other, allowing the bullet to center better without smashing it into the lands as much. See what the pros use. http://precisionrifleblog.com/2015/11/21/precision-rifle-barrels/

    Any one use jebs choke?

3 or 4 boxes? That would last me 30-40 turkey hunts. I originally bought two boxes of 10 shells each. After 3 hunts and 3 birds, I still have 17 left. Turkey hunting isn't like dove hunting. I try to hunt two or three states each year and most other states I hunt allow you to shoot two birds. Also on the Arizona youth hunt I usually let the youth I hunt with use my gun and ammo. I also check my sights each year before doing any turkey hunting (my sights are fully adjustable and not the normal shotgun bead). I find myself using around 1 box of 10 shells each year. That makes perfect sense. Wish I could hunt state to state, I am envious.

What do you always forget to bring elk hunting?

Looks under the equipment section. Ear plugs are right above eye protection.

  20. Went out duck hunting with my older daughter and son-in-law this morning. Took their GSP "Sarge" with us. Great dog, even better company, slow bird day (1 Wood Duck & 1 Green-Winged Teal for me, 1 Green-Winged Teal for Ryan, 1 Gadwall for Paige), but I got my very first Wood Duck today. Heading out. My first Wood Duck Sarge retrieving a downed bird.

Thanks for the education on the traps. I didn't mess with any of them. I actually used my binos too.
