anything good taken in kaibab this week?
lancetkenyon replied to Green Bullet's topic in Mule Deer Hunting
Hard to see, but we were on this guy for 30 minutes, from 600 to 790 yards. Then he went over the top and we waited him out all day with no reappearance from him. -
What is the DA (standard DA for 5500' is approximately 24.45)? Just elevation alone won't get you enough info, it depends on weather conditions. Last week, on a deer hunt at 8114' elevation at the exact same location, over 8 days, I had a fluctuation from 21.03 to 22.81 for density altitude depending on weather. That make a difference in actual drops at distance. Litz has the 180 NAB @ .481 actual G1 BC. Not the published .507 that Nosler claims. Another big discrepancy. What were your sight in conditions? Ambient temp, altitude, DA, powder temp, etc.? How temp sensitive is your powder? Twist on barrel? As for your original question, (standard DA, 1 in 12" twist barrel, temp stable powder, sight in conditions exactly the same as shooting conditions) I get: 13.6 MOA 92.4" drop 2.0" spin drift right 1950.9 fps 1521.1 ft/lbs By additionally adding the assumed corrected standard DA (24.45) and keeping the altitude, I get: 13.0 MOA 86.4" drop 2.1" spin drift right 2108.4 fps 1776.6 ft/lbs Change sight in conditions, and it throws everything way out of whack. Sight in conditions (with a non-temp stable powder like an Accurate RL19 or IMR4831 of up to 2 fps per 1°) @ 95°F, 1900' elevation (28.45 DA), 50% humidity, and then use your shooting condition data: (Temp stable powders eliminate most of these discrepancies, but not everyone uses Hodgdon extreme powders) 14.3 MOA 97.6" drop 2.1" spin drift right 1895.7 fps 1436.2 ft/lbs These discrepancies, as others have stated, is exactly why we need to go verify actual drops in actual varying conditions. Not just shooting at the same altitude/temp/environment, and then expecting to hit a game animal at 650 yards in conditions that are different than we are accustomed to shooting. Another reason that long range shooting cannot be learned in a single year unless you put hundreds of rounds downrange at a lot of varying conditions, elevations, temps, etc.

SOLD Weatherby .300 Magnum Mark V Ultra Lightweight
lancetkenyon replied to cpugsie's topic in Classified Ads
I can't believe this hasn't sold for the $800 asking price. If I needed an elk gun, I would be all over this deal. -
Lots of Cell Tower workers busy the last week or so, whats up?
lancetkenyon replied to PRDATR's topic in The Campfire
The Government IS working on towers right now. Maricopa County is putting in a new system, and we are doing a lot of the builds/installs. -
I will be up there in November too for Taylor's second bull tag in consecutive years. Look for a big black crew cab F250, and say "Hi" if you see me.

anything good taken in kaibab this week?
lancetkenyon replied to Green Bullet's topic in Mule Deer Hunting
Just got back from my daughter's hunt in 12AE. In 8 days, saw 85 bucks. 12 shooters, 4 absolute monsters. We just couldn't get Taylor to connect. She made me very proud. Hunted harder than all of my hunting buddies. I would be happy to share locations over PM. I will be doing a writeup without locations of the fantastic time we had soon. -
My 6.5 SLR loves 41.5 & 43.0 of H4350 too.

Powder charge weight? Great looking and shooting rifle.
-
If they were 1#, I would take a couple. But it would take me forever to use 8# of that powder. Good offer though.
-
After Taylor's deer hunt, I will be working on the paint job for the stock some more too. A gun that looks good? Cool. A gun that shoots good? A necessity. A gun that looks AND shoots good? Priceless.

The "WSM" or "RSAUM" or other similar rounds lean towards the short & fat craze. Supposed to be more consistent and efficient powder column, reducing throat erosion, while using similar powder charges and getting about the same velocities as the full length magnums. I have thought about a 7RSAUM or WSM in a lightweight mountain rifle, and think they would be great for hunting. But not so much for LR high volume shooting. If you want a good hunting round, and a decent life long range round, rebarrel to the 6.5 4S (based off the 7WSM case). Great velocity, mildish recoil, great BC bullets available, better barrel life than a .270WSM, 7WSM or .300WSM. Would work wonders on any game including elk with the right bullet and shot placement. Look at the 140 HVLDs and the 160 Matrix VLD.

Hunting on a Clean vs Fouled Bore (continued)
lancetkenyon replied to rossislider's topic in Long Range Shooting
I always hunt on a fouled bore. Some of my rifles like more rounds down the barrel than others. I clean when groups start to open up. I have found predictability on a fouled bore is usually better. Cold bore has not effected me, but clean bore sure has. -
.270 WSM is not a round you send a lot of lead down range with. It is a hunting cartride. 2 shots in .75" is a good hunting load. Keep it for hunting, and build a dedicated long range shooting rig. .300 WSM won't be much better unless you go with a heavier barrel. If you still want to rechamber, try Phoenix Custom Rifles. They just completed a laser beam .300 RUM for me. And did a 6.5 SLR earlier this year.

30° shoulder, longer neck, same design as the 6x47 Lapua. Shoulder starts at same place as .243 Win. So very, very slightly less case capacity but better & more efficient shoulder/neck design for increased inherent accuracy. Should be the same load info as a .243 Win for the most part. I have a 6.5 SLR and LOVE it.

So I was dying to get a few rounds down the barrel to season it and at least get an idea, so I swapped my SWFA 5-20x50 HD fro my AR onto the RUM. I just loaded 15 sight in rounds @ 85.5gr, of H1000, and also a bunch from 85.5 to 92.0 grains if H1000 for a ladder test later on. Shot a total of 12 rounds today. I took the chrono out just to get an idea of what it was doing from a 27.5" barrel. Sight in loads are as follows: Remington once fired brass trimmed to 2.835" CCI 250 Mag primers 85.5 grains H1000 210 Berger HVLD 3.685" COAL (just barely fits in mag) 3.077" to ogive 2957fps average ES=22fps (2948-2970 over 12 shots) SD=6.11fps Conditions were as follows: 75°F Wind 1-3mph fluctuating Baro 28.22 Humidity was somewhere around 65% according to Weather Center.com Rifle weighs in at 13#. With the Badger Thruster brake, it recoils just barely more than my 10.5# .25-06 Ackley shooting 115 Bergers @ 3400fps. (I hear a lot of people stating their .300s w. brake shoot like a .243). Must be a feather weight .243 shooting some hot loads. Or a 18# .300. Anyway, onto the results. A few of the chrono readings first. First group of 3 shots from the rifle after bore sighting only. I am pointing to the first round on a new, clean, oiled bore. Adjusted reticle right 3 clicks, up 18 clicks (1.8MIL or about 6" @ 100 yards) Shots 4 through 6. Shots 7 through 9. Adjusted down 1 click, left 1 click (.1MIL each) Shots 10-12. I quit there. Not much more I can do other than try to speed things up a bit. This is with absolutely no load development. It is with the first powder charge and seating depth I tried. Just seated to max mag length and let them fly. To say I am happy is an understatement. I think I am going to leave it alone for Taylor's elk hunt in a month, as recoil is very manageable, and with the altitude and projected temps, it should retain 1500 ft/lbs out to 1000 yards or so, and 1000 ft/lbs out to 1350 yards. I will take it out and stretch it's legs after deer season to see how it shoots at distance and true velocity an verify drops however. Should make for an elk hammer once I get it sped up a bit too. It will go with us as an alternate backup for deer though. Huge thanks to Phoenix Custom Rifles for putting together a laser beam on the cheap. I was giving my wife a hard time, since I just bought her a new Camaro last week, saying I get to go buy a new scope now. What can she say?

Questions on wildcats.
lancetkenyon replied to CJ Long range's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Not exactly. Base to shoulder, body taper, base diameter, yes. .270 has a longer overall case length (.050"), slightly longer length to start of neck (.050" due to necking down the parent case further to .277" to start), and longer neck for bullet purchase. Forming it to Ackley will increase the base to shoulder length by about .100" over a .30-06 Ackley case and you will gain a minute amount of less body taper too. Every little bit of case capacity helps in the hot rod race. A win by a nose is still a win. Plus, longer neck might mean very slightly inherent accuracy. Again, even .001" in accuracy is still a win. It will be cool to see how this turns out. -

Crimping 7mm rem mag?
lancetkenyon replied to Green Bullet's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Don't crimp. UNLESS you have a bullet with a factory cannelure (the indented ring around the bullet for the crimp to hold into). Even then, I never do. Neck tension is plenty to hold a bullet securely in the case mouth, and improper crimping does more harm than good. -
Plus Varget is much more temp stable. RL powders are notorious for big velocity swings when temps change.

I kind of liked the green stock with the stainless in the "white" look, but a little bling for my intended hunting use.

Great to hear you got it back.

Awesome job!
