lancetkenyon replied to bdhuntr's topic in Classified Ads
Spec sheet says 26.25" barrel length. Which is even better! Sweet rifle. -
Love it! That is awesome.

Federal Gold Medal Match w. 69 or 77 SMK should do just fine.

But way funnier if you don't.......a smashed face print leaves good evidence of a closed glass door.

I used to shoot out of my living room arcadia door all the time. I could add 7 yards, and shoot from the AC in the summer. But I was always smart enough to open the door.

WTB Remington 870 Barrel 12 Gauge 26"+
lancetkenyon replied to CouesPursuit's topic in Classified Ads
Not mine, but I heard it was wrong powder, pistol powder used accidently. I can't believe this type of thing never happened to my brother and I. He used to load all kinds of weird shells. Double powder, nails, chain, marbles, etc. -
I got lost when I was 14 on a deer hunt in 4A. I spent the long, cold night in a hollow log. The next morning, I found a road, and got picked up by another hunter and he drove me back to my camp. I was 4 miles away. The Sheriff Dept. had put out a search party already. My Dad was so mad/happy/relieved/proud. He also told me to never, ever, under any circumstance, tell my Mom what happened. And I haven't. I have never, to this day, seen him cry harder than he did that day. I could not imagine what he went through that night. We even finished the hunt...unsuccessfully.

Looking for advice on raising a child into a hunter
lancetkenyon replied to TonyC's topic in Youth Hunters
Personally, I think some of the Youth hunts are getting harder and harder to draw. I put my daughter in for general hunts for most big game now. Both my girls have hunted since they were 10 and have completed the Hunter's Education Class. It is a great learning experience. Let them make the decision on what their goal is. If they are happy with a doe or a cow elk, fantastic. If they want a bull or buck, spend a lot of time finding good spots to try your best to get them an opportunity to get a shot. Girls are the best. -

Carrying Extra Rounds in the Field
lancetkenyon replied to firstcoueswas80's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
My rifle pictured is a single shot. Plus, there is always an opportunity for a lion or coyotes to lose their lives while I am out hunting other big game. and Don't foget Willy, aka Songdogs, aka yotes.. Are there so many coyotes that I have to mention them twice? -
Reloading guys.
lancetkenyon replied to muledeerarea33?'s topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I use the RCBS hand primer. Once you get a feel for it, it is very easy to get consistent and quick. I can sit on the couch, watch TV, and prime a couple hundred .223 cases very quickly. -
This is about a far as I go for orange during hunting season.

question... shooting targets versus animals
lancetkenyon replied to naturegirl's topic in Bows, arrows, broadheads
Exitement. Grabbing the bow on release. Trying to look at the arrow before it is gone. Follow through. Wind. Trigger punch. Gripping the bow too tight. Broadhead not tuned properly. Etc. -
If you set up a blind, think about another camo canopy over it to shade the blind. It makes a HUGE difference. But 100° in the shade is still 100°. But at least you won't be getting the 130° direct sunlight turning your blind into a solar oven. If you can get there a week (or more if you scout) early, and know where you plan to sit for the entire hunt, dig a 2-3' deep hole and set you blind lower in the dirt. That helps too. Berm it up behind you and it is easy to push back in the hole when you are done.

Stud buck. Must have been the camo that helped him get that buck.....
-
Heavy! I'd shoot him. Of course, I have never been drawn for pronghorn in AZ, so I might shoot ANYTHING.

Look up the "Gutless method". Thank me later. Get a good pack and some good knives. Thank you for your service, and continued support and protection.

Which 6.5 for a short action?
lancetkenyon replied to rcdinaz's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Don't be hating on the quarter bores.... There are a ton of very experienced shooters and reloaders here, and most of them have different opinions on what cartridge they would choose and why. I am glad to see discussions on these subjects. It brings out a lot of information and suggestions that would normally be overlooked. I used to be a speed whore. A cartridge had to be fast for me to consider it (hence my two Ackleys, RUM, magnums, etc.). I still like a fast, flat shooter, but I have learned to like heavy for caliber projectiles now over pure speed. Gives me longer range capabilities rather than light bullets and pure speed. Under 500 yards, it doesn't make much difference. But get beyond that, and the heavies, even pushed slower, overtake the light bullets in drop, energy, wind drift, etc. -
My elk have all been taken late morning. Most of my deer have been mid day deer too. Only one has been at last light. But my most memorable miss on a huge buck was at last light.

Which 6.5 for a short action?
lancetkenyon replied to rcdinaz's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I have a few (24) 6.5 SLR cases (Winchester brand .243 Win formed to 6.5 SLR) that were out of spec for consistency of brass content when I weight sorted mine that I load 142 SMKs @ 2920fps for warm up rounds. They have between 5 & 6 firings on them with tight primer pockets so far. I load 43.0 grains of H4350 in them. Kind of hot, but not over pressure from any signs I have observed. I can see getting another 3-5 out of them. And they fit in a Rem 700 SA easily. Trying to fit a 6.5-.284 Win (or Norma) with 140 gr. bullets into a short action stuffs the bullets way back into the case (if you want a repeater), reducing case capacity for powder, and increasing pressure inside the case. Plus, you usually need to run a different powder burn rate with the case capacity. Making it not as efficient. Shorter cases with the bullet seated out longer increases available case capacity for more room for powder, and increases velocity without increasing pressure. More efficient. I think that is where you see velocities starting to come close with pressures remaining similar between a .260AI and a 6.5-.284 Win (or Norma). I had similar results with my .250 Ackley Imp. vs. a standard .25-06 Rem. Same bullets within 70 fps, with about 11 grains less powder. The .250 AI was a hotter load, I admit. But 44 grains of H414 vs. 55 grains of H4831 only netted 67fps (from 3100 to 3167fps pushing a 115 HVLD). A lot (if not all) of that would be the difference between a 24" barrel and a 28" barrel too. Plus, the Ackley Improvement of a 40° shoulder and a bit longer neck reduces throat erosion from scorching with a smaller powder charge. And they look so darn cool! -
??? for you / ALMOST DOVE TIME! yeee ha
