25-06 ???? Best all around bullet
lancetkenyon replied to lionhunter's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I have no doubt as to your story validity. Animals are tough. Some keel right over or drop like a sack of hammers, some run for 100 yards and pile up, some run off with fatal shots never to be found, some survive a shot that should be a mortal one. Some bleed like a fountain, some don't spill a drop. Bullets do not work 100% of the time, no matter WHAT Brand/design. I have seen Barnes from the same lot and loaded by the same person and used in the same gun, where 3 worked perfectly on elk over 3 years. The fourth one did not open and penciled through. I have seen Partitions explode on game and not penetrate. I have seen varmint bullets drop big game like a lightning bolt. I have seen, personally, match target bullets perform flawlessly on game, DRT. My deer last year, hit with a .257 HVLD, went a total of 10' and left a blood trail a blind person could follow. I have heard stories like yours too. Anything can happen in the field. Bust you just have to play the odds. For every story where a bullet didn't work right, there are hundreds where they did. -
I use a couple different bipods depending on the scenario. Simple Harris 6-9" benchrest for prone shooting. I like the one with the pivot feature. Doesn't work well with a lot of tall grass or bushes though. Harris 13-25" bipod for sitting/kneeling, a little too high for prone though. A Bog Pod 2 leg. Light, fairly quick, doesn't attach to the gun. Extends and spreads for low sitting, or even standing for me. My daughter used it to take her elk last year. Primos tripod with a saddle. The one I have has a trigger for very fast adjustments, and is great. A little heavy, but can double as a walking stick too. Good for very low sitting, and up to full standing or even use it with binos for glassing while sitting or standing. Combine the Bog Pod and the Primos tripod, and you have a rock solid setup that can be ready to go until the game appears. Or you can go old school construction style if you glass from a vehicle.... There is also the "Dad pod"

115 Berger VLD. Works wonders on everything I have used it on. Bunnies, coyotes, javelina, and large bodied mule deer. It would put a whooping on an antelope too, if I could EVER get drawn! Rings steel out past 1300 for me really well too. Flies like it is on a wire. -

Anytime. I am a wealth of useless information.....

So who thinks they are REALLY good with a bow?

How about a 300 yard shot then? -

I guarantee he can out shoot me on moving targets, from the back of a crotch rocket, jumping through the air, shooting 3 arrows faster, etc. -
Make sure you shoot a ladder test at a minimum of 400 yards though. MUCH easier to see distinct nodes. You should have 2-3 that are the same elevation high on the target, and 2-3 that are low on the target. That means the bullets are leaving at the top or bottom of the barrel flex. When I do my ladder tests, I load one round for each charge weight starting about +25% between min and max loads, and work up to about 2 grains ABOVE max. (Only YOUR gun can tell you what its max is, and books are notoriously light on loads due to morons who load way too hot and blow up a gun, CYA you know) I always use my COAL with the bullet jammed .0010". That way, no matter what I do later on in load development, I will never have higher pressures than during my ladder test as long as I don't load hotter than my determined max load. Start my shooting with the low rounds, and work my way up slowly. At the first sign of pressure, I stop and do not shoot any loads that are hotter.

I do the "hang a cup (or milk jug) on a string and tie it to the trigger. Then fill with water to a certain amount". 1 cup, or 8 fluid ounces, weighs .521 pounds. So 2 cups of water in the solo cup weighs just over 1 pound. Want more pull weight? Use a milk jug and fill until the trigger goes "click", then measure the water volume in a measuring cup. 2 cups of water is 16 ounces, or 1.04#, 3 cups is 24 fl. oz., or just over 1.56#, 4 cups is 32 fl. oz., or 2.08#, etc. Don't forget the weight of the milk jug or cup though.

Not a "fraud". Just that he is using some theatrics and there are some inaccuracies to his historical claims. But he is actually performing the shots. He just does not show a lot of the background, or missed attempts, just like almost every other video showing extraordinary feats. -

Your wife drew the early rifle bull tag in 3c with about 9 bonus points? That is AWESOME! Congrats. Good luck on the hunt.

Anyone Have a Berger Manual?

Me too. When I get home, I can photo and PM them to you. -
Any one have 338 accubonds 250 grain?
lancetkenyon replied to Presmyk's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Higher BC means better at fighting the wind so less drift, and more aerodynamic meaning less drop in both velocity and elevation at distance. A higher BC bullet will drop less and retain more velocity than a lower BC bullet of the same weight and fired at the a me muzzle velocity. As for ogive, it os the shape of the radius on the front of a bullet. Nothing to do with expansion. That is effected by both jacket thickness and tip design. Berger are all a hollow point design, and the hollow point is called a meplat. The larger the meplat and thinner the jacket, the faster the expansion. Also has do do with the lead core construction . -
Sportsmans usually has camo ASU hats. That is where I got mine.

HVLD = Hunting Very Low Drag bullet. A bullet with a boat tail and secant ogive with a high ballistic coefficient designed specifically for hunting with a thinner jacket to promote rapid expansion. The VLDs are known to be picky on seating depth, which vary from gun to gun. Meaning more load development and added costs, but on game performance is spectacular once you tune your loads. Berger makes a target version as well. Thicker jacket, but same BC and flight characteristics. I believe the secant ogive is not quite as accrue as a tangent ogive shape, which is what most match bullets are designed with. Like SMKs, Nosler CC Match, Hornady Amax and Match BT. Hybrid= A new bullet design by Brian Litz. It combines the nose designs of both the secant ogive (meaning low drag) and the tangent ogive (much easier to tune and not as seating depth finiky). Still has a long boat tail, and BC is actually a slight bit better than the VLD. But these are listed as a target bullet, meaning a thicker jacket not designed for hunting. Plus the tangent ogive portion aids in accuracy a bit, but maintains a very high BC. Like most match bullets not specifically designed for hunting, the hybrids have still proven to be a very good hunting bullet. But if you look at F class and 1k match shooters, 90% of them shoot the new hybrids, since they are much more forgiving for seating depth. -

Bruno's has the 250 Hybrids and 250 HVLDs in stock. I was in there yesterday. -
Hilarious. I have one dog that catches about 50%. My other one....ANYTHING you throw he catches. High, low, fast, lob, right, left, short or over his head, laying down, sitting, running, swimming, bouncing, rolling, hail Marys.....he is a vacuum. Best mouth I have ever seen on a dog. He has caught doves out of the air and taking off from the ground, rabbits in a full on sprint, even a Western Plover (which I was not real happy about). Once caught a Eurasion dove falling off a line I shot with the pellet gun.

Holy cow that is a monster cat! Thanks for taking some competition away from us hunters.

I use a pre-paid card . The card does work if the money is there. I guess if the money is not there, you get another chance this year. For your first comment, brilliant idea. For your second comment, that is total BS. No money at time of draw? Rejected!

Correct me if I am wrong, but higher velocities stabilize better than a slower ones with the same barrel twist rate. And a 210VLD @ 3450 would put whooping on just about all but the very biggest of big game, and I am talking elephant/rhino/hippo type animals. No N. American big game would stand a chance with proper bullet placement. I only get 3100 or so from my .300RUM with the 210/215s.
