Is .223 big enough for deer?

So how did the rounds shoot? Do you need some more, or do you want me to load you up some 70gr. TTSXs if you can get some?
  5. Like some have stated, I think they perform amazingly out of a higher velocity cartridge. I shot my 2012 big bodied muley at 488 yards with a 100gr. TTSX from a .25-06 Ackley. Quartering on, entered right front shoulder, exited left rear hip with about a 1/2" hole. Deer did not take a single step. Not much blood other than from the nose/mouth though, so tracking might have sucked if it took off. But...it did not go anywhere. About as perfect of an outcome as possible. I also have some 175 LRX loaded up for my .300RUM. I have yet to shoot any game with those though. I am betting on flawless performance.

    Best lightweight tripod head.

I have the Manfrotto 700 head. It is a bit lighter than the other Manfrotto panning heads. I like that is uses the same mounting plate as my Manfrotto pistol grip head, and I can just leave the plates and adapters on different optics for quick swap outs. I have plates on my 10s (x2), 15s, spotting scope, camera. Just swap from one to the other on two different tripods.

    What is the best scope

SWFA 5-20x50. Look at www.snipershide.com in the classifieds. You can find them used for under $1000 quite often. New are $1300 or $1500 for illuminated. http://swfa.com/SWFA-SS-HD-5-20x50-Tactical-30mm-Riflescope-P51653.aspx Pros: FFP scope, amazingly clear, awesome tracking and very discernible clicks, good reticle, good features, great CS if you would ever need it, built like a tank. Cons: A little heavy, no zero stop. MUCH clearer than a Vortex PSA for about the same price. Also, much clearer than my Leupold VX-III 6.5-20x50 LR.

Boots boots boots. 8 1/2. (I hope a youth Hunter can use)

Those top Irish Setters are the most comfortable boots ever. I have a pair in size 10. I would be all over them if they fit me.

.270Win or Weatherby 7MM for Cow Hunt

My 12 year old daughter will be using a .270 Win with 150 NAB LRs on her bull hunt this fall. I have no concerns with the cartridge or the shooter. Just have to do my part on finding her a bull.

AZLance, thanks for your service. Never knew you were BP. Much respect.
  13. Any update on proposed schedule? I am feeling the need to ring some steel.

    Failure to Follow Instructions

I see BP trucks all the time for work. They abuse the holy heck out of them in the line of duty. Plus, the guys they are chasing really don't care about the BP trucks, so they get to play bumper cars quite often.

    Scope base for remington 700

True. There are some cases that would require a 20MOA base to get to 1K. Like slower velocity, low BC, heavy bullets. OP stated he is shooting at 600 with a .30-06 and a 6-24x50 Vortex Viper, which has 42MOA of adjustment, so maybe 21 MOA or so up. Depending on load with BC, bullet weight and velocity, that should get him at least 900yds. or so, maybe more. Only issue I see, is with "only" 42MOA of total adjustment, with a 20MOA base, he might run out adjustment if the crosshairs are not centered in the adjustment range for sight in. We all know that dead center of adjustment range is rarely at the same place as actual sight in. If it is perfect, he would have 2 MOA of down adjustment, and 40 of up. I have also heard of a few Vortex scopes failing from pressure on the springs in the turrets while using 20MOA bases, as there is too much pressure being constantly loaded on them. Not just Vortex either, but some really high end glass.

    Scope base for remington 700

Honestly, with shooting out to even 1K+, there is really no need for a 20MOA scope base. You can get away with any scope base. I would suggest a one piece though, as they help stiffen it up and with less pieces, it gives less chance for something to loosen up.

    Bummed Out!... but Fortunate.

As others have said, either contact G&F about getting a CHAMP permit, or donate it to a youth. Don't let it just go to waste. Heck, I have a 12AE tag, if I kill early, I'll come pick you up and we'll go get you one!!!

Things your huntin buddies do that drive you nuts : )

One other thing. They never put in, and then when I get a bunch of bonus points, they want to apply with me.

  25. Absolutely amazing to be able to share moments like that with your kid. And he did great. That bull knew something was up but couldn't figure it out. Looks like he never really spooked.
