I agree with the choice of not passing him up. A great bull, especially with a bow!

5th generation AZ native here. Actually more, as my paternal grandmother was full Chiricahua Apache, so more generations than I know of. Makes my kids 6th generation natives. I travel a lot for work, but it is 90% somewhere in the west. From TX to WA, I have covered a lot of ground. I have been back to IL, NY, NJ, WI, MN, CN, FL, GA, IN, and I hate it back there. Pretty scenery, amazing history, but way too many people for my tastes. -
For dove/quail, I usually go out with family/friends. For big game, unless it is on one of my kids hunts, I am usually hunting alone. Not a single one of my buddies wants to hunt as hard as I do. Most of them are road hunters, I am not. I would rather put a couple miles a day in boot leather on the ground and get away from the roads. Sometimes the family is at camp, but not out in the woods with me. I always let my wife know where I will be hunting, where the truck is parked, where my camp is, and that I will usually be out until after dark. I try to camp where I have cell service, so I can check in each night/morning. This fall will be no different. Family all cannot get off work/school, so my deer hunt will be a solo hunt again. My 12 year old daughter's elk hunt will be just her and I. I am really looking forward to it.

Cherish them. They grow up way too fast. My oldest just got married two weeks ago. Seems like yesterday she was born, then starting school, then graduating college, now, 4 days later, she is married. Teach them everything you cherish. They will learn to value what you do. Teach them men do not hit women. And you will kill any man that does hit them. Teach them women do not hit men either. Discipline them when they need it, comfort them when they need it, but make them grow up tough. Life does not play nice usually, and they need to be prepared to face it. It is amazing how tough girls can be.

A "Chewing out" does not bring revenue. A citation does. Money talks these days.

I've read them all too. I like them a lot. -
A .22-250 with a suppressor could have worked wonders on predator control. Amazing footage. One reason I will never pass up an opportunity to take out a coyote.

Matching pedestal sink too. My wife likes them....

Did the warden confiscate the said "sparrow" for identification and evidence? If he could positively identify the bird as a "sparrow", if it is a House (English) Sparrow, then it was NOT out of season, as it is a year-long season (page 85 of the 2014-15 hunting regulations). If it was NOT a House (English) Sparrow, then it is a non-game species, and would be a citable offense. You can't just shoot everything that flies. But without photographs by the warden, or taking the bird in as evidence, it is his job to provide burden of proof of a game violation, which I'm not sure if he can do now. It would be nice if he DID take it and presents it, and it is an actual sparrow. That might solve this whole issue. House (English) Sparrow http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CCAQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FHouse_sparrow&ei=XZMYVLSIKYPhoATmrYH4Bg&usg=AFQjCNEHrW5VQyi31XU0JepL7e4ZNuTyXg for identification purposes. Basically, it is what we all know as the sparrow. I always carry a copy of the hunting regs with me, for this purpose, and my own reference. I have had discussions with game wardens in the field and we were able to clarify things that we were both on the line about. Remember, be respectful to LEOs, and they will usually return the favor.

On a side note, we have been gearing up for the hunt like crazy. Got her a full set (pants/parka) of Cabela's Silent Suede waterproof insulated gear, a full set of windproof medium weight gear, various layering clothing, and a pair of light, medium and two pair of heavy gloves. She has good 1000gram insulated waterproof boots, waterproof hiking boots, tons of beanies/hats, ear muffs, balaclavas, fleece facemasks, thermals, sweats, fleece, and wool socks. Plus a good set of Gore-Tex rain gear and hat too. So we should be good to go on clothes for just about ANY weather condition we might encounter. She also has her own good binos & tripod, sitting pad, a good small hydration backpack (daypack size) that fits her well, compass, etc. Anything you guys can think of that I am missing that would be essential to keep her comfortable during the hunt?

Hey, just thinking on it, I have a 20ga. Mossberg 500 that I have two barrels and two stocks for. Normal 28" barrel and an 18" barrel, and standard LOP stock and 11" LOP stock that I cut down for my girls when they turkey/dove/quail hunt. You are more than welcome to use it with the short barrel/stock if you can't find 28ga. loads. I know 20ga. loads are everywhere. And I know it works, because I just used it last weekend and slayed the doves with it. My brother and cousin were using my 12 gauges, so I broke out old faithful. Takes all of 5 minutes to swap the shortened stuff back on.

Check Sportsman's. They had a ton of 28ga. stuff there, all different size loads. It is 16ga. that is hard to find.

I lost 3 grandparents in the span of 4 months 4 years ago. All lived long, healthy lives full of good family and memories. 92, 94, 97 years old. And one set had just celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary. Remember the good times, and great stories and wisdom they imparted on you, and they will live on through your actions and retelling of their stories to future generations. Too many important memories and life lessons are lost by not passing them on.

Absolutely amazing! Congrats to her, and good job on getting her into the sport. You have a lifetime of memories in your future. -
My entire 2.5 acres was a lake when I left my house at 5:00AM this morning to have my wife drop me off. And rivers were flowing down my street about 8" deep. Good thing I have a big truck. My wife left her Camaro at home today and took my truck.

.277 150 gr Nosler LRAB
lancetkenyon replied to hunthard's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I am working up a load with the .277 150 LRABs for my daughter's elk hunt. Seem to fly pretty good, as far as this rifle is concerned. And the BC is like nothing else out there. I have used the .277 140 VLDs before, and they performed great on deer. I am looking forward to finding out what the 150 LRABs will do to elk this fall. -
Been out scouting some over the last couple months, but got out again yesterday for a half day. Saw some nice bulls (no photos unfortunately, we were too busy sizing them up through the binos), some deer, a great antelope buck, and shot a couple deer killers. We also found 8 dead sheep that the coyotes had killed. Both the coyotes I shot were on/around the dead sheep. Also, my now 12 year old daughter got to drive the truck around the dirt roads for a couple hours, which she enjoyed, and was relaxing for me too. I picked up a new set of 15x56 Meopta binos, and holy cow, I don't know how I used to glass with "just" 10x42s. The 15s are like cheating! I was glassing up bedded deer on mountain sides over a mile away, even with heavy midday mirage. Glassed up antelope bedded under trees at almost a mile and a quarter, and elk were easily identifiable at a mile and a half too. Beautiful start to a great day. The three antelope standing were at 1435 yds., and the bedded antelope under the left side of the tree was over 1828 yds. (the furthest my rangefinder goes). According to Google Earth, he was around 2236 yds. +/- My new chauffer Local wildlife Glassing the mountainsides a mile+ away is easy with the new 15s Nice buck we spotted

Finally....FINALLY got to the range to sight in the new scope and do some load development. Sight in took all of 3 rounds with 3 more to verify with my old loads. The SWFA 5-20 is extremely accurate on click adjustment, and really clear. Much more so than my Leupold 6.5-20 VX-III LR. Had some interesting results. The 150 Nosler Accubond LR shoot decent, but I think some tweaking is still in my future. Shooting a ladder test @ 300 yds. over a chrono showed a wide range of velocities. From 2637FPS to 2961FPS with no signs of pressure yet with the bullets at .0010 jammed. But I think I will stop, as I found a good load to try out. I had a high node at 57.5, 58.0 & 58.5gr. with the 58.0 load shooting a sub-MOA group at about .650" for 5 shots. Time to try seating depth then testing at longer than 100 yds. Conditions were as follows: 88-98°, elev 1653' AMSL, pressure 28.11, winds swirling from 1-6 o'clock @ 5-15 mph. Mirage was rocking too. Here are a few 5 shot groups after the ladder test: 57.5 gr. H4831 58.0 gr. H4831 Kind of a weird group of 58.5 gr. H4831
