Wow. Shocker! I drew a 12AE early rifle hunt in 2012. Just drew another one!
-
When will the draw results be posted

You sucka. -
I am a big quarter bore fan. Great javi/antelope/deer caliber. Not a bad 1000K steel round either. I have a .25-06 Ackley Improved that is simply amazing to shoot. Light recoil, laser fast and surgical accurate. I have 3 loads worked up, and all POI are the same at 200 yds. 100 Barnes TTSX @ 3598fps. 100 SMK @ 3658fps. 115 Berger VLD @ 3486fps. My 11 year old daughter made a 1st round kit at 865 yds. on my 12" steel. I also have a .250 Ackley Improved. Similar to the above round, but a bit slower. Kind of weird, but recoil seems similar to the .25-06 AI. 100 SMK @ 3200fps. 115 Berger VLD at 3100fps. I took a 1328 yd. coyote with this gun this spring.

So is there a new RMEF? "Ricky Martin Elk Foundation"?
-
I just left there. Might be higher in price, but if you order online for $26/lb., delivered price to your door is the same as Bruno's, and takes a couple days to get here. Not that I like paying higher prices, but better than doing without in my opinion. And if you build a relationship with them, they will even let you know when a certain powder you have been searching for for two years finally comes in stock. They have a ton in stock right now. IMR, Hodgdon, VV, Alliant, Accurate.

Triceratops....the OTHER, other white meat.

And folks say you don't need camo in the woods.....looks like they blend in pretty well with the surrounding vegetation. Gone are the days of jeans and flannel shirts.

My 11 year old daughter and I had a good time. I did not drop any $$ on the raffles or the auctions, but wish I would have. Saw an old friend that I haven't seen in 10+ years working the AES booth. Thanks for the heads up on this. My daughter learned quite a bit, and I learned a few things too. Met some great people, saw a lot of future generation hunters having a good time, and got to fellowship with other Christian hunters. A true win/win. -
Beautiful cinematography. Love the pristine outdoors as much as hunting.

My daughter and I were supposed to go up for a long weekend, but got called back Thursday afternoon about 3:30pm when my wife got rear ended and totaled her Mustang. We left Thursday morning about 2:45AM, and before sunrise @ 5:45AM, had seen 68 elk (one stud bull, 2-3 mature 6x6, a few raghorns/spikes, and a bunch of cows w. calves. Also saw antelope with a decent buck in the herd, 10 deer with 3 small bucks, 2 turkeys, a lone coyote, a prairie dog town (which now has two less than before we got there), and a bunch of rabbits and various birds. Only a few photos, as most of the elk were seen when it was too dark to photograph them. a raghorn bull Antelope buck Jake turkey Jackrabbit Lucky coyote

lancetkenyon replied to syd34's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Straight from the Barnes #4 manual: COAL: Min 2.530 Max 2.800 No IMR4350 load data for the 140 TSX/MRX. Try www.reloadersnest.com for load data. But remember, this is private party load data, so load with care. -

Thanks for the info. I think my 11 year old and I might attend this. Close to our house and just in time for my daughter's first elk hunt. -
Not just a kids/ladies rifle! Great lightweight mountain rig for antelope/mulies/coues! I have a couple quarter bore rifles and love them. A .250 AI (very similar to a .257 Roberts) and a .25-06 AI. I put a big mulie down at 488 yds. with my .25-06, and my daughter shot a big mulie with the .250 AI at about 200 yds. I have taken javelina and the longest shot on game for me ever, a 1300+ yd. coyote with the .250 AI too. Light recoiling, and put a good bullet down the bore, it is good enough for even elk some say.

A lot also depends on your end usage. LR shooting at paper/steel? Just for fun or BR/tactical type competitions? A good 6MM (.243, 6MM Rem, 6BR, 6 Creed, 6MM SLR, etc.), 6.5MM (6.5 Creed, 6.5-.284, .260 Rem, etc.) or 7MM for higher winds and longer than 700 yd. shots. LR hunting? Large game/small game/varmints? See above for the 6MM or 6.5MM for small to medium game or even larger with the good 6.5MM rounds. 7MM or .308 for larger game. 7MM (7-08, .284, 7MM RM, 7 STW, 7 RUM, and a few other lesser known rounds) .308 (.308 Win, .30-06, .300 WM, .300 RUM, etc.) For shooting at paper/steel, I would definitely go 6 or 6.5. Less recoil, less cost per round fired, great ballistics with the heavier bullets, good speed, and easy to shoot. Getting up into the magnum 7mm and .308s, you are going to get a lot more recoil and cost per round. For hunting, I would go a good 7mm for an all around cartridge. 7mm Rem Mag is hard to beat. Not huge recoil, ammo available EVEYWHERE in a pinch, tons of reloading components, and good speed vs. bullet weight. Not terrible barrel life. Good energy downrange too. Can load lighter for small game, and up to 180gr. for even the biggest dangerous N. American game. A little light for big coastal brown bears, but proper shot placement will do just fine. Big, heavy bullets moving fast are great on game animals and to buck the wind, but if you are recoil shy and can't hit what you are aiming at, proper shot placement trumps a miss. It is all about what YOU can shoot comfortably and hit what you are aiming at with EVERY shot. My 11 year old daughter made a first round hit at 865 yds. with my .25-06 AI shooting 115 Berger VLDs at my 12" steel last year, and two more consecutive hits with an approximate 7" group. That still retains about 995 ft/lbs of energy (3700 AMSL, 55*, 28.92 pressure). Plenty for a deer sized animal if the opportunity presents itself.

www.reloadersnest.com I will assume a 7mm Rem Mag. But you can get info on just about any round. http://reloadersnest.com/frontpage.asp?CaliberID=48

There is a big difference between rock crawlers and the local yahoos who destroy the desert. I have been into rock crawling for about 10 years. In that time, I have seen clubs do amazing things. From working with BLM to build new access roads into previously closed trails, work with private landowners to gain admittance into previous closed trails, perform annual clean-ups at Table Mesa/Florence Junction/Catalina's/White Tanks and removing literally tons of junk/cars/shooting trash from each area twice a year, helping build recreation areas and build travel management plans with BLM/USFS/State Trust Land jurisdictions. Also helping to recover vehicles that have been stolen and burned or rolled by weekend travelers, all on our own dime. Helping law enforcement protect our public access lands by reporting the vandals who cause this sport to be looked down upon. 95% of off-road trails have been implemented into travel management plans in various areas, and are not "cross country travel". They are approved trails. If you want to look at the cause of 99% of desert destruction, look at the recreational shooters. 4WD clubs fill 6-8 40yd roll-off dumpsters just about every year with nothing but shooting debris. It is pathetic.

And the conglomerate of broken vehicle parts is at the entrance to a 4x4 trail in Florence Junction called "Highway to heck". I know it well. This is the first major obstacle on the trail...

I just got back from Alaska on vacation. We booked with a guide for a half day salmon river fishing trip. Way early for most runs (July 1st is usually the main run start time), but they had a very limited early sockeye run on the river. The cost was $150/per for three of us, and I tipped my guide $50. Here is the kicker. The gear they supplied was crap. The guide was more interested in fishing himself than really helping us. I did most of the work except for picking the spots. We wound up catching two salmon (my wife w. 1 @ 12# and my 11 year old daughter w. 1 @ 11#), a rainbow (my daughter, 16"), a dolly varden (my wife, 18"), and a grayling (my daughter, 12"). I got skunked, but hooked up to a salmon and a rainbow, but did not land them. I was just thrilled that my 11 year old caught her first salmon and had a great time. Even though the guide did not really do his job, I had a fantastic experience, probably more so than if the guide would have done all the work.

I went down to G&F today and checked in person. No extra fees for the application. Dropped ours in the can while I was there. Just my daughter's luck, she will pull a tag for the 12AE late hunt this year....I hope.
-
I have not been able to get and study a hard copy of the hunting regs, and have not seen it in the e-copy I downloaded. I have not seen anything on an added cost for the Kaibab as in years past. Can anyone confirm AZGFD has deleted this fee this year for rifle hunts? I would hate for my 11 year old to get rejected due to insufficient funds.

Andrew is very good. He wheels the tar out of his own rig too.

I had this exact rifle set up about 5 years ago. I kick myself for selling it. If I was not going to AK in two weeks, I would buy this tomorrow. Good luck with the sale.

Now I am out of town....I will work on her this weekend after I get back. On a serious note, I do not think I can take her right now, but GSPs are my absolute favorite breed. My two boys would be in heaven with this girl, but I don't think it is in the cards right now. Good luck, and I really hope she goes to a good home who will love her like we do our boys.

www.jcsteeltargets.com I really like the coyote. And 3/8" should be plenty unless you are shooting a .50BMG at 100 yds. My 3/8" AR500 BARELY deformed shooting 210 SMKs at 3150fps at 400 yds. with my .300RUM.
