    German Shorthaired

I have a 17 year old GSP that could be for sale at the right price. Doesn't run around like a wild man (too old to run away) , takes hand signals (he is deaf), stays on point on a bird or rabbit (has cataracts so he doesn't see them leave), doesn't bark at everything that moves (deaf and half blind), very calm (sleeps most of the time), good with other dogs and kids (again, sleeps all the time), not an ounce of fat on him. $16999.99

    5 To 1 Odds.....Why Not?

So, last month, a buddy sent me a video of a "world record" shot with open sites. 2200+ yards with open sites on a 36"×48" steel. On shot #64, he hit the steel. We started a discussion, and in my opinion, I said I thought quite a few good shooters that had an accurate rifle with good hand loads had a decent chance at hitting a 36"×48" target at a mile (1760 yards) in 64 shots. Well, he called me on it. Gave me 5 to 1 odds I can't do it. I said, "$100?" "As in $100 to $500?" was his reply. Yep. So the bet is on. I called up my Dad, who has his old Winchester made M1917 Enfield that was his target rifle back at ASU when he was on the rifle team. .30-06, 26" 1:10" left hand twist. Has a rear ladder aperature sight with elevations out to 1600 meters. That was with the .30 M1 ball ammo. Which is not what I plan to use. Went and bought 100pcs of new Remington .30-06 brass and will begin brass prep shortly. Weight sort (hope to get at least 75 pieces), trim, chamfer, primer pocket uniform, flash hole deburr, FL size, tumble and anneal. I have been looking at ballistics, and I think I am set on using 210 HVLD or 215 Hybrids. Should be able to get 2500+ fps, which will have less drop and drift at 1700+ than a 180 started out at 2800fps. These will be going transonic at about 1480 yards, so stabilization beyond that might get iffy. Only about 1752" (95.1 MOA) of drop at 1760 yards though....an inch per yard.....huh. 37" of spin drift with zero wind too. I have a few thousand Fed GM210M and CCI BR-2. Still looking at powder choices. I want consistent, not necessarily best speeds. Not a lot of info out for the .30-06 & 210+ bullets. Any suggestions are appreciated. I have a BUNCH of different choices. Varget, H4350, H4831, H1000, etc. Once I get a load worked up (which will be fun in itself), then, he and I will be going out for a day of LR shooting to settle this. Not sure of the outcome, but sure should be fun to attempt. Need to get a piece of 36"×48" 1/4" mild steel to hang too. He is going to go hang that sucker, not me. Anyone else ever tried anything like this? I shoot 1760+ a bit each year, but with accurate scoped rifles.

    Question about Berger Hybrids

If it is shooting well, and you have had good luck with it, why change? If it ain't broke, don't fix it. You will read about failures with any bullet you can think of. In all honesty, bullet failures are a rare percentage. And probably 90% of the "failures" are shooter failure rather than bullet failure. Also, right now, with the scarcity of primers, powder, and some bullets, be conservative with your supplies.

    Question about Berger Hybrids

The differences between the hunting VLDs and the Target Hybrids are twofold. The nose profile of the VLDs are a secant ogive design. They can be sensitive to jump, and need a bit of tuning to shoot their best. The Hybrids are a hybrid design between a secant and tangent ogive shape. Easier to tune, and not nearly as jump sensitive. The jacket thickness between the hunting and target bullets is the other difference. The target bullets have a slightly thicker jacket than the hunting lines. To me, that translates to them holding together a touch better on impact. The 215 Hybrids are probably one of the best .30 cal bullets you could use for a hunting rifle in my opinion and experience if you can push and spin them fast enough. I have heard of people using them in .308Win, but I think they are much better suited for the .300WSM/.300WM and up capacity cases.

    300 win mag load

Nice 5x bull. 🤣 Good shot placement Sean. I remember the story well. 210s did not perform for you. Multiple well paced shots. Across a vast chase. Glad you finally anchored him. Sean is good people. Tim is good people.

    300 win mag load

Depends on how fast you run them. I shoot the 215 and 230s in my .300RUM @ 3100+. Have 1st round hits on coyotes out to 1365.

7mm Rem mag ammo selection question

Sectional density, higher BC for retained energy on game at distance, retained bullet weight on game after expansion.

    .338 winmag

.338WM is a case the same size as the 7RM. I sure wish it was a .300WM case size. .338WM, to push a 250gr bullet, really suffers in velocity. A 300 grain bullet is even slower. Making a .300WM pushing a 230 a much more viable option for LR shooting.

    .338 winmag

This is a new reloading method I have not heard of. So you neck size, seat the bullet long, crimp, and then chamber the round and still get the bullet to seat deeper? How hard does the bolt close?

    .338 winmag

So what happens when you have to eject an unfired round and you pull the bolt back and leave the bullet stuck in the lands?

    Early Kaibab Rifle Reports???

4 years? Really? Unless you had other BPs built up, good luck. Honestly, a late tag is usually a 12+ year wait. You hear about people pulling one around 7 BPs, but not often. Then there are those lucky suckers that draw with 1-4 BPs, but those are rare at best. I have NEVER had a late tag, with up to 10 BPs. But, I am determined that a late 12A tag WILL be my next deer tag. I had 8BPs this year and really had no expectations of drawing. Which I didn't.

    Early Kaibab Rifle Reports???

Surprisingly, I know 4 guys who had the archery hunts, 5 guys that had 12AE or 12AW early rifle hunts, and have not heard a peep from any of the rifle hunters. I know a few who have the late hunts too.

    Swarovski Customer Service

I bought a set of Swaro SLC 15x56 HD in February. Since I had no spring hunts, they went right into the safe. Fast forward 6 months, and I threw them in my optics bag for a ride out to NM for our antelope hunt. We got out there the day before our hunt started, and I finally, excitedly, put them on the tripod.... No matter what I tried, I could not get a single image. Everything was double, and messing with my eyes badly. Very disappointed, Input them away for the rest of the trip. And out of my thoughts until 3 weeks ago. I have an elk hunt coming up for my son-in-law, so I figured I better get them looked at. Emailed Swarovski USA about 8:00PM with photos of the receipt, box, serial #, etc. and explained the issue and my upcoming hunt schedule. They responded early the next morning, and sent me an RMA # for repair. I boxed up the binos, including copies of the email, receipt, photos, etc. and sent them off 2 weeks ago. I was told 6-8 weeks for them to even look at them, then a determination of repair, and then repair and ship back. A week ago, I got an email stating my optics were being inspected. The next day, another email stating my binos would be covered under warranty. 3 days ago, a tracking number for a package. Yesterday, I got the binos in the mail! To me, I am not sure if they are a brand new pair, or my 15s. But I really don't care. I promptly took them out, put them on my tripod, and Violá, perfect image! Big thank you to Swarovski USA for quickly taking care of their customer.
