Duwane Adams Glassing Lesson
lancetkenyon replied to NewlyMinted's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I have a buddy who is being guided by him on the Bab in November....I am jealous. -
That is funny. I saw you drive by and thought, "That looks like DUG's FJ...". Small world.

I heard two distant bugles in 7W this weekend. But the bull we saw Sat night was still pushing 7 cows....6 now.

Awesome family time Sean. Thanks for sharing.

High BC, Fast Twist .257...
lancetkenyon replied to duckhunter175's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
For the 131 Blackjack, I think a 1:7" would be a bit too fast at 3300+fps. Blackjack actually recommends a 1:8" twist for 3300+. But, I would go 1:7.5" myself, allowing a bit more flexibility and stability if you want to run them a bit slower with a good lower end node. The 1:7" is recommended for cases like the 25CM, .250AI, 25x47L, .257 Roberts, etc. Yes, mine is going to be a hunting rifle for deer/antelope sized game. If I can get the 121 Hammer shooting well in the next couple weeks, it will be a backup for Kaibab. I know a guy with a 1:7.5" shooting the 128 Hammers with great accuracy so far. Just depends on where all you plan to shoot it to see if the 121 or 128 would be a better fit. Only high elevations, the 128 might do just fine. Dropping down low, the 121 might stabilize just a bit better. But even if the 128 loses a bit of BC, still might beat out the 121 at higher velocities at distance. -
High BC, Fast Twist .257...

I am running a 25SST 26" 1:7.5" Proof Sendero. So far, the 131 Blackjacks are screaming at 3268fps with only about 50 rounds down the barrel, and zero pressure signs. Had them up to 3312 so far with H1000 final fire forming the brass. I got a compressed load of H1000 @ 3312, so might try RL23 to free up some case space. They shoot pretty good too.... 200 yards, 3 shots, 3268 fps, 8ES, 3.4SD. POA was green dot. Still working on loads, so not necessarily worried about zero yet. (Photo is actually sideways, shots were above green dot, but that doesn't matter in the photo) Some other 200 yard 3 shot groups during fire forming/load testing so far as I started to dial.in for 200 yard zero. -
I will post up the story soon, but successful.

Probably saw you driving around. We were in a white 4Runner. Congrats on your tasty elk!

Were you camped off the pipeline road? Only camp I saw with two cows hanging in it.

"Slap it on" is a general term. Not a method of proper installation. -
Yeah, I was just saying that for $15, you get a nylon holster, but CS costs extra. Unfortunately. Sucks to hear though. Frustrating.
-
Freaking AWESOME!!! Love getting the young ladies out hunting.
-
Dude....what kind of CS do you expect from a $15 holster company? I realize the Vista Outdoor LLC holds more companies than Uncle Mikes. Actually surprising what else they own. But kind of a stretch to bash Bushnell for an Uncle Mikes CS issue. Might as well blame Savage Arms, Alliant Powders, RCBS, Weaver and Federal while you are at it. Along with about 20 others.

NM to TX Road Trip. Gun Transport Info Seeked

TX has NO OPEN carry. But anyone can carry concealed. So be aware of that. -
Sucks, but probably not much worse than any general elk opener. At least they weren't shooting at the elk too. They were probably in a more concentrated area, you should try a different area in the unit.

Build him some handloads to go with the rifle, problem solved. Doesn't matter if he doesn't hand load, you do. Heck, I bought my older daughter a Savage Axis in 6.5CM for $300. Then built 100 rounds for it that cost more than the rifle! Lapua brass, Fed GM205M, H4350, 130 Berger OTM. Shoots stupid accurate, sub-3/4" @ 200 yards.

Brass dissipates heat so fast, there is no need to quench. Just adds time to your prep to dry it thoroughly inside and out afterwards. Quenching is for hardening/tempering, and brass doesn't temper. I use the MAP gas torch and deep socket method as well. Done about 30k rounds that way. Depending on brass and cartridge, anywhere from 3-6 seconds per case. There is not set amount of time for every case. I am north central Phoenix area, but if you need help, let me know. I can knock them out for you fairly quickly.
