Dude, unless it is a medical issue....this is NOT the year to turn in an elk tag!!!

need help... never mounted a rail before...maybe gunsmith recommendations

Depends on the rail and action. You can usually tell pretty quick if the rail fits correctly. If it does fit well, I do not feel the need to bed it. I do not think it has effected accuracy that I have noted. Higher quality rails have never given me any issues. Seekins, NF, Badger Ordinance, EGW, etc. -
He effing sucks then!!! At tracking, at shooting, at life.

If you are available today or tomorrow, I can slap it on, mount the scope, and bore sight it for you. Have all the right tools. Mounted probably 100 or so scopes and bases over the last few years. R700s are easy. Cost you a 12 pack of Redbull. PM me if you are interested. I am up near Sportsman's Warehouse area, I-17 & 101. -
How do you shoot a "broken" rifle? Or do you mean "braked"? 😉
-
It shoots amazing. Stretched it out to 1450 easily.
-
Muzzle brake. All the way. Taylor has been shooting (on occasion) my .300RUM since she was 11. And the 6.5SS is a pea shooter with one.

Looks much better this year too. Wonderous what good feed does for game.

You, as a fellow hunter, should have told him to STOP after #3 at the latest. This is just asinine.

Shut. Up. The bucks go down as soon as it hits 55°. You should totally stay down low.....the whole time.... I agree, not really snow that pushes them down. Unless it is 2'+. Frozen solid water sources, frozen browse, missing ladies. I have seen it snow as early as Sept., and sometimes in November/December, there is still no snow. Depends on the year. Not really a whole lot to speak of on the early hunt. A few inches to a foot in some years usually. Not enough to push. But on occasion, they can get hammered in October. Play it by ear, keep tabs before the hunt, and plan accordingly for ALL weather conditions.

Yeah, I don't mean the second "miss". Trust me, I have missed plenty. One evening in a treestand, I missed a coyote, turkey, AND the biggest buck I have ever released an arrow at. I meant 2nd animal I hit and did not recover. (Knock on wood) I have been lucky to this point to have never hit and not recovered a big game animal. (Doves don't count). The first hit and never found animal, I would look for a minimum of 48 hours. And more than likely keep an eye out for birds even after that while hunting the same area. I have been on an elk hunt (not my own) where the hunter shot a bull elk with a 7RM from approximately 80-100 yards. Bull took off at the shot. Luckily, 12 hours of fresh snow was on the ground, making tracking easy. In 4+ miles and 4+ hours, I found a single drop of blood. Found a spot when he bedded in the snow, nothing else. Finally merged in with a bunch of other tracks and he was gone. Looked for 2 days for him and birds. I have no clue where the shot hit to this day. I am certain he survived. I have also been present on two different bulls that had old arrows completely through the chest cavity and had healed around them. One was just a shaft, the second had a broadhead stuck in the offside rib that has a mass of hard tissue that had formed around it. Sometimes, elk are just hard to kill. I have been called from buddies in the field that could not find game and made a trip up as far as 6 hours to help look. I am 3 for 4 in recovering their game.

Didn't you see the powerlines in the background of the first pic?
-
Weimaraner....spelled correctly.
-
After the second one, I would hang it up.
-
They would make some killer puppies with my boys though. GSP/Weim mix or GSP/Walker/Weim mix?
-
400" or this guy? Super tough decision. But this was a good choice.

Soooo glad this is not a male.....

Call it in for sure.

Seating Die Contacting Tip of 143 ELD-X Bullets

Hornady makes several "bullet specific" seating stems....good way to make more money. -
Didn't we have a "range day" in January?

I practice shooting between 545 and 1221 in sitting, kneeling positions. Off packs, bipods, tripods, bipod/bipod combos, etc. I don't really practice standing/offhand too much, because if I shoot offhand, it is usually going to be 200 or less. Although, I used to practice standing with a hand on a branch or side of a tree quite a bit. But offhand to me is only an option if sitting with front bipod won't work. I have let a lot of game walk past 200 if I am not able to get sitting/kneeling. Just my personal call. I feel confident in sitting/kneeling positions with a good front rest out to 600 or so. If I add a rear bipod/tripod, I am good to 900 on 8" targets. If I get prone....look out suckers. I practice a lot out to 1700+, and a few rifles even to 2000+. That is not a high percentage shot though. But great wind reading practice. If the bullet has 1800fps and 1000ft/lbs (1500ft/lbs for elk) you are in the danger zone on a calm day. But, I don't think I would shoot at big game, even under perfect conditions, past 1000-1200 depending on what rifle I had. That being said, my longest personal big game shot is "only" 662 yards. 488 is my second longest big game shot. 445 third. Everything else that I can remember has been sub-200 yards. My three longest big game shots have all been sitting/kneeling w. front bipod and some natural or other rear aid. Draped over a downed log (488)/root ball of downed tree (662), or front/rear bipods (445). Wind is a whole different ballgame. Even with my wind meter, I won't take shots much over 500 if it is blowing over 10mph. 10mph+, and I have passed on a LOT of probably make able shots. I just feel like I personally need a 100% shot probability on big game. Now coyotes?? I fling lead at them as far as I think the bullet will drop on them and ruin their day. 1 @ 1327 & 2 @ 1365, still looking for that 1 mile shot. All 3 were prone shots. Tons of other prone, sitting w. Front bipod, or offhand.
