Accident mix powder what to do??
lancetkenyon replied to Zeke-BE's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I am thinking it is not 120 oz., but 120 grains? Meaning two loaded rounds worth? Shake it up really good and don't sweat it, use it for fire forming. -
I buy them every time I get drawn for an elk hunt......so about every 18 years.

Depends on where it is describing. Some areas only hold mule deer, but if they mean the entire state, they left out Coues. Not sure about the "within minutes that can follow their mothers" statement. But I guess even 6 hours could be described as minutes. 120-250# is accurate. Black on the tails is accurate for the most part. Smaller than an elk is accurate. Main food source as juniper is incorrect.

Whats the longest youve left an Elk in the field
lancetkenyon replied to trphyhntr's topic in Elk Hunting
Last late bull season. Gutless method. Elk was skinned and quartered within 2 hours or so after shot, neck roasts, backstraps, tenderloins too. Everything placed in game bags, and left to cool In snow until breaking down was complete in the dark. Then hung off the ground in a dead tree to circulate the single digit air overnight. T-shirts and sweatshirts hung in tree near meat to keep coyote and crows away. Meat was all in great shape, and tastes great. Taylor's cow hunt was early October. Cow was gutless method, quartered etc. within an hour or so. Hung quarters off a deadfall in the shade to start air cooling. Packed out and in an ice chest using 1 gallon frozen jugs within about 3 hours total. No splitting the meat, just rotating about every 4-8 hours the first day. Kept cold in the cooler on my shaded carport for 1 week after we got home, then processed. Probably the best elk we have ever taken. -
If you want a few 7mm heavies to test, let me know. I have a few....

Let's narrow this 6.5 chamber down (help)

If you use Remington or Winchester 243 or .260 brass, no need to neck turn since those brands use the same neck & shoulder material thickness. If you go Lapua, Hornady, Nosler, or Norma, you would need to neck turn. Good thing is Winchester and Remington brass is cheap, and you can buy extra and weight sort. Save the out of spec brass for some varmint loads. I have 4 loads for mine. 100 rounds of my 140 HVLD hunting loads at 2950fps, 50 rounds of a 127 LEX @ 3060fps for up on the Kaibab, 50 rounds of 95 VMax @ 3400+ for varmint hunting, and 300 rounds of my lighter target loads pushing a 140 HVLD @ 2850fps. -
And yet you are wearing what appears to be a Guide DCS vest in Vias in your avatar photo.... I really like the Major Brown items, I wish more offerings in it.

I am 6' -5" tall. (Six foot negative 5".....5'7").
-
I am 6' -5" and 155#. The mediums fit me great, with some room to layer base/LS Tee/vest or down. My Guide DCS in Major brown is a large, and I can layer an additional 2 layers under it if needed.

My findings in 7RM, 7 SAUM, and .280 Rem: Berger 180 HVLD, and a 180 Hybrid should all fly just fine from a 1:9" twist. This over several rifles. I had a buddy shoot my personal 180 Hybrid load out of his 1:9.25" twist Sako 7RM this morning, and it shot lights out. Nothing tailored to his rifle, just very consistent hand loads, and his rifle shot factory loads from HSM, Hornsby and Nosler. HSM 168HVLDs @ 4.5" 3 shot Nosler Trophy grade 160 NAB @ 1" 3 shot Hornsby Precision Hunter 162 ELD-X @ 1.25" 3 shot group My 180 Hybrid load @ .5" 4 shot group, add 2 fliers as the barrel got got and 6 shots totalled .75".

Kuiu is all I wear now for mid to late season hunts as my layering system. I wear Sitka base layers, since I have them already, but I would go Kuiu if I didn't. I have: Guide DCS pants in Verde and Vias Yukon rain pants in Major brown and Verde Guide DCS vest in Vias and Verde 2.0 Guide DCS jackets in Verde, Vias, and Major brown Teton soft shell jacket in Verde Super down jacket in Verde Yukon Rain Jacket in Verde Depending on temps and weather, I wear my rain pants as a wind pant/outer layer, and my guide pants over jeans. I can layer both over jeans if it gets really cold and be fine into the 0° range, even when sitting and gassing. Tops can go from a single layer vest or jacket, to vest/down jacket/guide jacket layers. Most of my stuff are mediums, but my brown Guide DCS jacket is a large, and easily goes over 3-5 layers. They do run a touch small compared to other brands, and are an athletic fit, so meant to be closer fitting. Taylor has appropriated some of mine too.

FOUND Male Drahthaar in Phoenix, AZ
lancetkenyon replied to WildHeritageTaxidermy's topic in Lost and Found
Beautiful dog! -
I laughed out load. My question to you: Is the barrel being trashed? Or just spun off and you have plans to reuse it possibly? Wondering if you don't care about the barrel, or are you able to safely salvage it? And what ft/lbs do you torque to? 100 ft/lbs? Or hand tight + 1/4 turn? TAF? I am considering saving my .25-06AI barrel that comes off when the new Proof barrel goes on for my .280AI.

No one has picked this up yet? Crazy. Good price on a good optic.

I haven't seen any difference in velocity, only metering is much easier and finer kernel weight. -
Whats the longest youve left an Elk in the field
lancetkenyon replied to trphyhntr's topic in Elk Hunting
Not long. Even in cold temps. Maybe 6 hours? Not overnight. I had a good buddy that left a bull overnight during an archery hunt a few years ago. Shot it at last light, and let it sit for an hour. Started tracking, and couldn't find it, and called me to come help. I was up by first light the next morning, and we found it about 2 hours later. Meat was no good. About 12-14 hours. 2years ago, a friend of a friend shot a bull last light during the late rifle hunt. Temps were in the low teens overnight. Found it within an hour of sunup the next morning. Cut it up and dropped it at the processor. They called him and told him it was all bone sour. Lost the whole thing. -

Mag primers are hotter, but not always needed. How did speeds change with the mag primers vs. large rifle? I am thinking of using BR-2 in my new .280AI build, but use CCI250M in my .25-06AI now. -
I have 3 Kuiu Guide jackets. Awesome gear.

Buddy of mine won a shotgun and a Yet I cooler last night.

Any antlers deer is an archery trophy. Take what you can for your first buck. You have years ahead to start refining your quest and pursuing bigger, older bucks. Welcome to the club.

That is a great price!

I have been scouting since the weekend following the results postings.

Let's narrow this 6.5 chamber down (help)
lancetkenyon replied to Zeke-BE's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
The 6.5 RSAUM (or GAP 4S) will still have shorter barrel life than a .260 Rem/6.5 CM type velocity cartridge. Speed=wear. That being said, I am keeping my 15# 6.5 SLR as is for high volume shooting, but going to rechamber my 10.5# .260 to a 6.5 SS (Sherman Short Mag) in the fairly near future for a carry weight deer/antelope hunting rifle. I really don't need two 2800-2900fps 6.5mm rifles. But one 2900 & one 3200 fps 6.5 will sure be nice! -
