Winchester 243 Ammo, brass, and bullets

Mike, do you need me to pick this stuff up for you? I can buy it, then we can hook up when you get back if you want.

300 Win Mag rounds. What would you use.

Whatever shoots BEST! Shot placement is priority #1. Shots could be long in 10 on the late hunt. Accubond are better LR bullets, but you need to see which one shoots best at 500 yards. And when I used to shoot NBTs, I heard the .308" 180s were a different animal than the lighter .308" projectiles.

I want to reload, I need advice....

I reload .223 in my single stage. But again, I load for accuracy and consistency, not true bulk "blow and go". I can load 300-400 an evening with my press. But.....I have some additional tools that help speed things up. Like an electronic dispenser/scale (but a powder throw works quicker, just weigh every 10th throw to ensure it is consistent), and I have done all of my brass prep beforehand (which you need to do anyway, even with a progressive press). A single stage will load pistol rounds just fine. But not as quick as a progressive. Buy a progressive first if you want. You can get a single stage press later if you want, for cheaper than a progressive press. Most dies, shell holders are interchangeable, so you can use them for either.

I want to reload, I need advice....

First let me say the "saving money" portion of your thoughts.....throw it out the window. It will take several thousands of reloads in .308 and .223 to make up for the initial cost of getting into reloading. The RCBS Rockchucker is really hard to beat for a single stage press. Get the Rockchucker Supreme kit and you are 75% of the way home already. Add a trimmer, trickler (not really needed but nice), and a few other minor items. The Redding Big Boss kit gets you about 95% of the way to starting loading. Just add dies and shell holders. With the calibers you mentioned, you will be reloading for accuracy and performance gains more than money saving. You can buy a lot of ammo for the costs of getting started. Unless you shoot a LOT, you won't see any money savings. I still can't save much money over the cheap $6 box of .223 after loading probably 10,000 rounds, but the accuracy gains are what drives me. You can't get consistent hits at 800+ yards with the cheapest stuff you buy on the shelf. Gun shows are a good place to get some great quality reloading components for less than retail price. Also, keep your eyes peeled here. Lots of good stuff goes up regularly. I think there was a Forster trimmer on sale last week. If it is still there, you should snatch it up quick. I love mine, and I process thousands of cases a year with it, and it has not needed any love in over 8 years.

    New 6.5 SLR Build

I can't wait to take out a target to 1000, to see what kind of group I can print. My fear is......I will start shooting this thing a couple times a month, and my reloading bills will pile up like crazy.....meaning I will have to do more side jobs (my gun/reloading money usually does not come out of my paychecks), meaning I will have less time to shoot....a catch 22.

    New 6.5 SLR Build

Went and shot some long stuff today. Shot my 24" AR .223 w. SWFA 5-20x50 SS HD. 100 rounds from 350 to 998. Only 10 @ 998, but even with the winds went 60% on a 12x16" steel. Went 90% 3 times at 820 too. That wind would get me on one round out of 10 each time, driving me nuts. Shot my .25-06 Ackley w. Steiner 5-25x56 T5Xi. 20 rounds just for elevation verification. The scope did OK. Clearer by a bit than my SWFA, and I could make hit calls easily out at 998. Eye box is crazy picky. So if you are not perfectly behind the scope, you get black edges or dark sight picture. Then my new baby.... Shot the 6.5 Super LR w. the new Kahles "Gen III" 6-24x56 K624i w. the SKMR reticle. This reticle is AWESOME. The small aiming dot is amazing. And the .2mil subtensions on windage make wind holds a cinch, and second round corrections quick and easy. Glass is hand down better than my Steiner, no comparison. Eye box and relief are great. Very easy to get behind quickly and keep a good sight picture. Parallax adjustment is easy and accurate. Clicks are very tactile and audible both. I even tried the illumination on a couple shots when it got really cloudy. This is the first real long range shooting I have done with the 6.5. I started verifying drops at 352, 424, 567, 624, 720, 820, 998, and 1371. All were really close to what Shooter predicted, with what velocity info I input into the program. I trued the ballistics with actual drops after I was done, and found out my "light target loads" that I thought were on average of 2775fps, are actually right around 2815fps. Hits at 998 seemed easy, and could be made on demand, I think I only had one miss due to wind. Hits at 1371 went 75% for 20 rounds, with the 5 misses bad wind calls by me, but never more than about 8" out depending on gusts or wind dying at the shot break. Holds ranged from .3 to 1.5mils left. Meaning about a 40" push difference L to R with the fluctuating winds. Then stepped it back to 1770. All I had was a 12"x16" steel, so that is what I shot at. Of course, it was the last shooting of the day, and winds were starting to pick up but were fluctuating a bit (I'll blame the winds). I still went 50% on my steel at a mile, so I was really happy with that today. 5 out of 10, with 4 misses that were probably within 12" or so, and one we never could see an impact. I will try to get back out on a calm morning and see how this really does at a mile with no wind. Come-ups were (with a 200 yd. zero): 352=.9mil 424=1.5mil 567=2.8mil 624=3.3mil 720=4.3mil 820=5.3mil 998=7.5mil 1371=13.4mil 1770=22.0mil (scope maxed at 22.0mil elevation, so any further, or different conditions will require holdovers in the reticle too)

    leufeaux scopes

Serial #s on the bottom can be verified quickly with Leupold. Good catch!!!
  17. I shoot the 210 HVLD and 215 Hybrids, both are over mag length where my gun likes them. Meaning I have a Rem 700 BDL single shot. I just keep a cheek pad with cartridge loops on the stock for my spare rounds, should the need ever present itself, which it hasn't.

    Heaviest brown ever!!

I have a buddy that found a set of sheds that score 390" with no spread credit. They were about half mile apart. Glassed up the first one, and looked for 4 days straight for the match before he found it. I found a set of big matched blacktail sheds (4x5 plus eye guards) in CA that were about 3/4 mile apart, but luckily in the same canyon, just way further down. I mounted them on a skull plate. I also saw the guy that shed them the year before, about 6 times in 2 weeks for work. Wished every time I saw him I had a non-resident archery tag. He was a brute of a blacktail. I have also found sets of sheds laying like they fell off while the animal was taking a nap.

    Tips for consistency?

Don't grip the bow riser. Use a wrist strap and let the bow fall away after the shot.
  20. I have not read through the entire thread, but will simply give my opinion on the first original post. If you have an order of protection against someone, and you know they will be in a certain area, it is just as much your issue as theirs. It is public land, and your ex has just as much right to be there as you. Would you go to his work if you knew he would be around? No. If you push the chances of meeting by hunting in the same area as he is planning to hunt, I would feel YOU are not in accordance with the order of protection, by intentionally and knowingly entering into a possible contact scenario. Find another area in 6A that is on the opposite side of your exes normal haunts. There are elk all over 6A. Do some preseason scouting and find another location. I am sure if you ask for some areas to try by PM, a lot of people can lead you in the right direction. But letting the board know where you plan to stay away from to avoid contact would help also.

    New 6.5 SLR Build

With the new plant in Colorado, and the use of German glass and new coatings, I had high hopes for the scope. Don't get me wrong, it is not a BAD scope, and I am sure most would be overjoyed with it. I am heading to do some LR shooting next weekend, and I will be taking the .25-06 out, so we will see how it works at 800-1360.

    What are your thoughts?

First, let me say this kid is not the target of my irritation with this video as much as the misleading information he gives. I applaud his efforts in an attempt to limit accidental firearm injuries. The statement in the video of "10,000 children are injured or killed in the US by firearms" is a scare tactic. While it is technically true, 7550 of them were intentional shootings by others (gang activity), and the "Children" are anyone under the age of 20. Only 2150 were accidental shootings. Another 300 were attempted suicides. This won't stop the 7550 deaths/injuries, or 300 suicide attempts. And it might only stop half of the accidental shootings. Education would go a LOT further in reducing these numbers. I also hate the skewed information on gun statistics. If you pick and choose your information you provide, you can make anything sound legitimate and accurate. Also, safe firearm handling would go a long way in reducing accidental firearm injuries/deaths. Look at the author's handling practices at 0:33, is the muzzle pointed downrange? Nope, pointed at the next station on the range. All of the above I typed before I had watched the entire video. After watching the rest, I have more respect for the author and what he is attempting to do. I can admit when I am wrong about a subject, but I wanted to leave the above posted to not only share my opinion, but show how actually listening and understanding another side of an issue that might differ from our own can be a good thing. I still would never own one of these devices. I think this could be a great application in homes with children who are not brought up and trained in the acceptable handling and use of firearms. A lot of adults do not take the time to educate their children about safe handling practices. And a lot of adults, in all reality, have no business handling firearms themselves, as they have never been taught/trained in safe handling practices. I guarantee my 12 year old daughter is safer with a firearm than 75% of adult gun owners. All of this is due to education, hands on training, and instilling safety first. Once someone sees what a firearm is capable of doing to a target, whether it be a can, bottle of water, or game animal, the healthy respect of a firearm's capability grows exponentially. Hide it from a kid, and curiosity and lack of respect can cause a tragedy.
