With the Jr. hunts coming up, this is a GREAT pig/coues rifle. Light weight, and smoking fast and accurate. Coyotes drop like the hammer of Thor hit them, and jacks literally vaporize. It's a sight to see.

.257 Barnes stuff is sold. I have requests for the other stuff, but nothing firm yet. Waiting on a member (Couesdeer) to seal the deal. I will let you all know. Here is my opinion. I am not sure how the wind got you, probably underestimation. But, it anchored the deer for you to be able to get another shot, and finish the job. The deer was found and dispatched. It looks like it would have been a lethal shot eventually, and I am glad you located it and completed the job as quickly as you could. I do not think a 700 yard shot is out of the question for those that practice routinely at those, and further, distances. But, we have a responsibility to the game we hunt to make the kill as quickly and humanely as possible. I have seen perfectly shot game go a long distance and a long time before expiring. I have also seen game hit poorly, which died quickly, due to shock to the system. I would not sweat the shot, use this as an example for the future and practice more for next year. When you are used to shooting at 1K+, it makes the 700s seem easy. Personally, I limit my long range shots to when the wind is very calm to still. If it is windy, I shorten the shots to no more than 500 yards, depending on the rifle and game I am shooting at. Nice bucks, and I see some good eating in your future.

I just picked one of these up from a fellow member here yesterday. I have another Eberlestock pack that I love, and wanted to pick one up for my 12 year old daughter. She now is the proud owner of an X2 pack. I will probably use it on occasion as well. They are VERY adjustable. she is on the petite side (about 4'10" and 70#), and it fits her with everything tightened down as far as it will go. I also tried it on (I am 5'7" and 155#). Plenty of growth available for a bigger guy than me. We dropped two gallon water jugs in it when she was trying it on to add a little weight (17+ #), and she was very comfortable. Combo internal frame with an aluminum additional exterior frame to help stiffen and spread weight. Lots of Molle straps for adding small packs of accessory holders. Thanks to Mike for the great deal he gave my daughter on hers.

I have the same frame pack. Works just fine for big loads. Packed out my deer last month with it, a big bodied muley. I have also used it for packing into the Black River on the San Carlos for a week of fishing. It goes with me on all big game hunts for packing out duty. I have packed out javelina, deer, quartered elk on many occasions over the past 15+ years. By itself, the frame pack is very light when empty. But can haul 80-100# when loaded with ease. More if you are up to it.

Welcome to the site. Browsing on here will lead you to some new hunting buddies. Good luck in the future. In all reality, I usually don't mind hunting solo for a short period of time (like 4-5 days). After that, I really start to miss my family. Luckily, I have a couple great friends for day trips, but none of them hunt big game like I prefer to, so those are the solo trips. My brother has started to show interest in deer hunting for next year, so time will tell.

I will be right across the road from you too. And not for me, but for my 12 year old daughter! Talk about pressure. Like others have said, enjoy your time. Take photos of all you like, sunrises, sets, cool trees, squirrels, whatever. Memories and time spent in God's country are rewards enough, an elk will just be a bonus. Getting away from the hustle and bustle of society will be an amazing experience. Pressure to kill will only hinder that. With all that being said, best of luck.

Did you check Brunos? I was in there yesterday and they have a ton of Berger's in stock. I picked up some .308 210gr. VLDs yesterday. Didn't look at the .277 though.

If it is the barrel, and you voided the warranty, you can always re-barrel the rifle. I hope it does not come down to it. Let us know if it is the scope. I am sure we all would like to hear the outcome.
