Utah NR Hunt Fees- Huge Increase

Moved away from AZ two times. Texas and NM. I will tell you the grass is not always greener. Texas is all private and NM is beautiful but as corrupt and crime ridden as any place I have been. My wife travels a lot and lives in different states from months to years at a time(mostly east of Mississippi river). She has never been anyplace that she would choose over AZ. Most people take our weather for granted. I agree, Maricopa county pretty much sucks but there are far worse places to live. Carry on.

Utah NR Hunt Fees- Huge Increase

Quite the contrary. We should be doing everything possible to keep fees as low as possible for everyone. We don't want hunting to become a rich man's sport. If the average, working class hunter feels like they can no-longer participate then they will drop out and stop supporting everything that goes with betterment of wildlife or conservation. Some of you may cheer that hunters might drop out, but we need people who hunt and support the North American model of wildlife management to be active participants. Otherwise, all the Karen's who are anti hunters will have their way. I fear Utah's new fees will encourage other states to follow.
  4. Does anyone know if the Arizona Bowhunters Association is still around or even an entity? They have not had their annual bowhunter happening the last two summers and I wanted to know if it was going to happen this year. I know they partnered with another group and had a banquet last year but then nothing after that. Website looks to be taken offline, and Facebook has not been updated in almost a year.

    Dream Hunt?

Sheep or exotics have never done anything for me. I dream about hunting big deer & big elk with bow and arrow during the peak of the rut. Would like to get a lion and bear with my bow too.

    San Carlos permits

Not sure about the other places, but I know the circle K no longer sales the permits. When I drew the SC spring turkey tag on the 2nd pass the email said I had just a few days to pay. I clicked on every button looking for where and how to pay. It was very confusing and probably took me 15-20 minutes before I figured it out. The SC online draw system makes AZGF draw system look like it's state of the art IMO. Again, I am very appreciative of SC for allowing non-members to hunt and recreate there but their communication systems are terrible.

And the Card hits will begin

Congratulations! You Definitely earned it. Not sure of your skill level but since you have saved a ton of money not elk hunting over the years, I recommend you hire a good guide and make the most of this hunt. We look forward to the pictures and story come this September. Good Luck.

Need Advice: Family Friendly AZ towns not in the valley

Anything north of Metro Phoenix is bound to be ruined by exponential growth. Although I like the Verde valley area, SE Arizona would probably be a better choice for overall quality of life. As an educator, I can tell you the number one indicator of student success and performance is parental involvement and a loving home. I sure wish I could do this all over again. Good Luck.

    San Carlos turkey

I originally received a rejection notice on Monday and then on Friday I received another notice that I drew a 2nd season spring turkey tag in the 2nd round of draw. I didn't even know there was a 2nd round to the draw. I haven't hunted SC since 2019 so it will be nice to go back. I have hunted east, central and west and birds seem pretty evenly dispersed to me. See way more bears on east side.

    Great antler shedding videos

Back in the day when we could run cameras, I got a picture of a spike elk shedding one side. It's a still picture and the spike is in the air about 3 feet above him. This also the time of year when I had most my cameras stolen. Shed hunters were the worst.

    San Carlos permits

Thanks for the information, Dan. While I appreciate the opportunities SCAT provides to non-members their communication services are terrible IMO. It took me 3 weeks to get someone on the phone to ask a question on the spring turkey draw. The website is outdated and not accurate as it has all last year's information. Even the new online lottery system did not offer dates of the hunts and the number of tags being offered for each hunt. It's hard to put in for time off when there are no dates of hunts. Thanks for sharing your contact information. I may reach out to you if I have other questions. John

    San Carlos permits

Hands down, the worst run agency. They make USAid look like a model of efficiency and accountability.
  13. I've been on here a long time but every time someone refers to Lark or .270, I have no idea what they are talking about and goes right over my head. I guess I missed something, but I have no interest in going back are reading old threads. So, continue to carry on with whatever you are carrying on about.

    License to apply

They did this to try and stop the people (mostly NR's) who can squeeze 3 application cycles out of one license (elk, deer and elk again). Depending how the calendar works each year they may still be able to until the calendar falls back a week. Many NR's are waiting to apply on last day Tuesday the 4th and buy a new license then. Then their plan is to hope and pray G&F site holds up and doesn't crash. I'm in already so I don't have to worry about it. Good luck to all those that apply.

    Rut In January 2025

Hard to believe but there was a time every time you drove around in those units you saw bucks like this. And it wasn't just during the rut. The Az elk population Boom of 80's - 90's, trapping ban in early 90's, and drought that began around 2000 has been the demise of mule deer IMO.

    Crossbow permit repeal

I think you need to stop and look at the data and statistics to know that the crossbow permitting system was clearly being abused. Crossbow permit holders are taking a disproportionate number of deer and thus reducing opportunity for bowhunters. Your argument is based off emotion and not rational thought.

    Landowner Tags

I hope all those in favor of stopping this legislation are writing/calling their state representatives. You got to do more than just post here.

    Crossbow permit repeal

CHAMP permit was created for those people who are so severely disabled that they need to hunt and shoot from a vehicle.

    Landowner Tags

Not in favor of this as it is written. Says nothing about if landowner has to agree to allow public hunting on their land if they accept a LO Tag. That should be a must. LO elk tags should be for cow only. It has been agreed upon by the courts, the wildlife belongs to the state no matter where they reside.

    Anyone rent camper trailers?

I am also interested in trailer rental that sleeps 3-4 adults comfortably for summer camping and early archery deer seasons in Coconino County area.

    Rut activity

A friend who lives in central AZ and sees deer from his house nearly every day said he just noticed bucks chasing does around this week. No big bucks yet but he is finally seeing evidence of a rut. He normally starts to see some action the week between Christmas and new year.

    2025 Wyoming Antelope Hunt

I'm not sure if I am the best person to respond to your question. I have only had one experience hunting Wyoming archery antelope back in 2011. I flew into Salt Lake Friday evening, rented a car and drove a few hours to a unit in the sw part or Wyoming. I had 6 points when I applied with a guy from Utah. We talked for a 2-3 years on Bowsite and he told me he could help me get my first antelope with a bow and arrow. The guy was 73-year-old William "Bill" Allard (BB from bowsite) who grew up in SW part of Wyoming. I rolled into camp around 10:30 pm, met his son Cody, and talked a bit. We got up next morning drove to a spring in the dark that he put a ground blind on. From the blind I saw a total of two antelope and the 2nd one was a buck that came into the spring around 10:00 am and I shot it at 17 yards. Driving back to camp I saw maybe 10-12 antelope. That evening we drove around and checked on some other places he had blinds at, and I saw maybe 8-9 more antelope. The next morning, he wanted to take pictures (he is an amazing wildlife photographer) and we sat in a blind that we checked out the day before. It was crazy fun because the rut was on full bore and the bucks were chasing other bucks and does all around. This was probably the best part of the entire hunt just being able to witness the craziness of an antelope rut. Sitting in a blind and driving around I probably saw no more than 50-60 antelope, but it was a great show. I hunted with a bow and arrow even though it was a rifle hunt. I killed my buck on Oct. 1st and the weather was perfect for hunting out of a blind. Not the real hot stuff of August. According to BB, the last week or so of September is the best time to hunt antelope in the rut. Flew back home on Monday morning. If and when I hunt Wyoming again, it will be during their rut.
