  1. I once talked to the guy in charge of the California Condor project at the Kaibab deer check station.  I told him how we had a hard time getting lead free 25-06 ammo for my son's hunt.  He told me if we ever draw again just get hold of him and he would get whatever we needed no matter the caliber.  We used lead ammo but bagged all the intestines and everything after gutting it and dropping them off at check station.  Sorry I didn't save the name of guy but you could probably call G&F and ask.  He might be able to help you on your reloads.  Good Luck

  2. Although fairly common today to see WT in the area, 30 years ago it was not so common.  I remember seeing my first elk (cow & calf) in 17a up on juniper mesa in 1986 and thought that was weird at the time.  Now it is pretty common to see elk in the unit.  Used to be much more common to see a lot more mule deer up north than elk but not anymore.  Some species have expanded and improved while others like the mule deer have declined.  I was born and raised in this state and spent a lot of time camping and fishing.  Started hunting in 77-78 but I didn't see my first elk until 1983.  Arizona is constantly evolving.

  3. Selling my sons left handed bare bow.  He has owned since brand new and probably no more than 600 arrows shot from it.  A new string was put on in 2019.  Diamond (by Bowtech) Rock 2.0, Left handed, 24-30 inch draw 70 lbs.  This is a very good starter bow, good deal and still in excellent condition.  Here is a write up about bow.

  4. Just purchased a Ruger .357 at the Sportsmans Warehouse Ruger sale a couple weeks.  I hope I can find ammo in time for HAM hunt in February.  I'm not very optimistic as long as we have hoarders and ammo hogs.

I'm scheduled to meet old high school friends in the Canyon Creek area for a long-planned weekend of camping/fishing/story-telling.....    Uh, maybe not.  Waiting on a couple of them to blink so I don't have to be the first to surrender.  LOL

Sitting around and talking with old HS buddies is worth the trip.  The fishing is just a bonus.  Go and enjoy the fresh mountain air during monsoon.  Good Times IMO.

Can someone explain the allure of the 3a/3c tag for me?  I see a lot of publicity about it, and have spent little time in there, but the guides putting the collages on FB are putting up piles of pics of 145-165 bucks on them?  Seems like there’s one good one that comes out of there (190+) every year but a whole pile of 3 yr old 22” bucks as well.  It seems to me that just about every unit I’ve spent time in south of the canyon can produce about like that.  I hear of NR burning 20+ points on that tag, wondering if it’s just buying the hype or of I’m missing something?  Nothing wrong with 140-160 bucks but a guy can shoot bucks like that annually on no point type hunts across the west.

Pretty simple really.  It is probably the best mule deer hunt south of the grand canyon.  The department is managing it for older class animals.  Albeit it is probably not near as good as the 12/13 units it still has the potential to produce 180-200 bucks.  Most the traditional mule deer units don't even come close to quality and quantity of 3a/3c.  This is just my opinion and I am sure others may not agree.  Lastly, it is closer.  Drive 2 hours to scout and hunt as apposed to 5 to 7.5 hours north of colorado river.  I think every 3a/3c tag holder should also be issued 5 "wild" horse tags.  Just say'n.

  7.  Not saying I support G&F paying hunting "celebrities" to encourage NR's to hunt our state but a big reason it is harder to draw tags in AZ is due to our population growth.  AZ had 2.4 million people in 1980 and now we have 7.7 and that is expected to grow another million by 2030.

Non-residents should never be allowed to buy any big game tag over the counter when resident big game hunting opportunities are getting fewer and far between.

Does anyone think they drew the LATE 3A/3C hunt that has 10 tags?

    Jeff

My son had 14 points and no tag for 3a/3c.  I'm not surprised as I am sure some people with near max points applied.

  9. When I was a kid growing up my dad was a horse trainer & ranch foreman at pretty penny ranch in what used to be north Scottsdale.  I used to make extra money for doing things for people who boarded horses there.  I got paid to ride peoples horses because they had no time, clean horses hooves, exercise in round pen and even brush horses.  One of the horses I got paid to brush every other day was Amanda Blakes horse.  I never once saw her do anything with the horse.  I was always amazed at all the horses that were boarded there and never messed with or much less even ridden.  Horses spent month after month in their stalls and only got out when they got new shoes or a trim.

Yeah.. robbed by the Federales on the road on the way back from Rocky Point.

Wasn't personal. They robbed everyone. But I'm 1776% sure I'm not going to get robbed in Mexico again.

And it sucked- Loved the people. Was a long time ago, but it sticks with ya.

This just happened to my son who is a LEO two weeks ago.  Less than a mile in across the border and he gets stopped and told to pay the fine right now to the federally.  Sure put a sour taste in his mouth and said he probably never go back.  For you guys who think this is ok and just the way it is can have all you want of a county like that.  You will never see have to worry about me taking your spot on the beach.
