Dont ignore that open grassland/sage or antelope country, there was a 230 ish buck killed in that area a couple of years ago. Not as many deer in that type of habitat, but there are fewer hunters.

You should try a 190 gr. Berger, VLD, and a good scope, such as a Vortex 4x16x50 FFP HSLR then you will have a rock solid 650 yd. elk and big deer rifle. It works well, dont let anyone tell any differrent.

The HS-LR dosent have an exposed wind age turret, if you carry your rifle in your right hand it will rub your wrist, it will also not fit in a scabbard. Bottom line its more compact. I have the 4x16x50 HS LR FFP, and find it perfect for hunting big game, I know someone else who uses this scope and loves it.

Hike far more than you run, the steeper and rougher the better, biking is good also but I also use a stair climber/set for endurance/30 min/ tread mill for at least 15min. at a time, turn the tread mill to rolling hill/highest level/3.6 mph. Minimum 45min. combined, at least three times a week and hike every chance you get.

Yes the Vanguard is made in Japan, but the new ones are tack drivers, my old one also shot well below MOA, a good friend had a REM. 700 300 WBY. and the bolt cracked, and this is a common problem with them in that Caliber, a Google search will show you. I shot my old Vanguard more than he shot that rem, and not a single problem. REM has nothing on these rifles.

A TTSX or a 160 or 175 gr partition, they have never failed. also federal loads a Tipped Bitterroot this is an excellent bullet.
