The balance of the rifle is high on my list, a longer barrel just feels right. A little extra performance never hurt either. I wouldn't own a standard cartridge with a barrel less than 22 inch. I grew up with a couple of Remington 600 in the house, but If I had a choice it was the M 54 270 with 24 in barrel I took out hunting. It shot better than any rifle in the house new or old. Just personal preference.

You could use a Barnes 80 gr. TTSX they work real well.

THE 308, 243, 7 08, 260 can have a 22 inch barrel, I would like a 24 inch on the 260 or 7 08 if it was to be a long range rifle. The 270, 3006,280 rem do very well with a 24 inch barrel (Perfect). Magnums 26 inch, slow powder, and heavy for caliber bullets.

Proper cleaning and barrel break in
452b264 replied to Zeke-BE's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I follow Bartlien method to clean a barrel. They dont recommend the use of any metal brushes in the barrel and have a list of materials, and how to use them for cleaning their barrels. I shoot and clean after every shot for the first 9 rounds, then every three rounds until I reach 18 total, then I just shoot it until it fouls. I clean the action and bolt after every use. -

This is very good advice for the OP. The bull in my avatar was found in August and I watched him for a dozen plus days, there were 5 hunts before mine and that bull was 450 yards from where I first saw him in August, my hunt was in December. Scouting well before your the hunt allows you to learn the roads, where to camp, the terrain and exactly where you are going to hunt, with at least two or three good areas. Look for places that are road less, rough, deep, thick and steep. Most hunters wont want to pack an elk out of. Where I killed that bull I have offered to take a friend who had a tag back into that area, once I showed him from about three miles out where we had to go he told me to go F**K my self. Thats the type of area you need to look for. There were two other bulls that he hung out with that were much bigger but I couldnt locate them, and I promised myself not to pass any one of the three bulls I had been watching. Good luck!

Pressure Signs Early/Well before MAX *AND W/Factory Ammunition*
452b264 replied to CouesPursuit's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
That is most likely a head space issue. I saw a brand new M 700 at the range with severe head space from the factory. I have seen guys beating their bolt open with a brand new gun. I have head space gauges for a magnum, but I dont have the wenches to loosen and re-torque the action and barrel nut. -
Always a good starting point. https://www.azgfd.com/hunting/units/flagstaff/7/

That will make a young hunter a nice pack.

Winchester Model 70 7mm Mag ($425.00) SOLD!
452b264 replied to grapevinedave's topic in Classified Ads
The Winchesters that were made in new haven had very good quality control. I bought a 270 and it shot 5/8 in. using factory ammo with the factory stock, and it wasn't bedded. The push feed models shoot very well. Good luck with your sale.
