Sounds like a good night!
-
Yeah cold in flag but looks like no moisture coming. Im sticking with plan A
-
Theres water. A lot of it is trucked in for the tanks in big black cisterns. A lot of the tricks are empty but some stil have water.. Problem is most of the tanks I found water in are directly in the road. With 550 tags in the unit, not only do we have to find elk, but avoid other hunters. Sitting water will work, until someone drivers right through. I did about 60 miles of dirt and saw 2 deer and a coyote.

Im leaving in the morning- spending two days on the ground. Still looks dry I think.
-
My replacements pipes came! I ordered some high temp putty in case it happens again.
-
So one of the pipes in the set has a cracked seam. I ordered some new ones, but it got me thinking. These single wall pipes get super hot- is there a tape or putty that can be used to repair it in a pinch?
-
Looks like a sweet setup!

I think Ill keep the cheapo as a backup and get a Stihl or a Husqvarna as the primary.. yeah heard great things. All those Alaskan shows on Netflix? All use Stihl.

returning a chainsaw after a year? 11 months. They gave me store credit. I bought a Paulen instead. Home Depot has a lax return policy.

Whats the thing on the side?
-
It does. Or holding a light- or even starting a fire. As luck would have it, most of my knife activities occur after the sun sets.

So, I have the 7 late elk hunt as well, and I'm jumping through hurdles trying to get everything ready for this hunt. There has to be a Murphy's Law for a bull elk hunt. For those interested in a list, keep reading. Unlike the boys youth doe hunt on the Kaibab, I opened the tag for the bull elk and it was indeed a bull elk. F&G sent the boys duplicate elk tags instead of 2 elk and 2 doe. I had to run down to Sportsmans on the Friday the hunt started and get duplicate tags by signing an affidavit- F&G were observing Veterans Day and were closed. (And it was thanks to this site that I googled the solution- it was here. *isnt everything*) I ordered new sheepherder stove pipes, because ours blew a seam on hunt last month and filled the tent with smoke. (Added a carbon monoxide alarm to the list). UPS lost the package this morning, and I opened an investigation. Cabelas and Basspro are both out- if this box is lost I don't have pipes for this stove and it's going to get cooooold. I ordered a Wiggys Ultima Thule sleeping bag, and was told they had to make it. Jerry (the owner) put a rush on it and shipped it out when I told him it was for Elk next week. (Fantastic company and service!!) My chainsaw died- (Never buy Ryobi) and I took it back to Home Depot 11 months later and bought something bigger. And a new chain. Trailer lights blew- no idea. I'll start with the fuses in the truck. Water pump busted on the 35 gallon drum- cheap fix but still yet another thing to Amazon. The Savage 300 win mag. The screw to hold the trigger guard to the stock stripped the plastic. They ... sent me a wrong screw as a solution. Tried to call, was on hold for 30 mins when I just decided to email them. I requested a place in Phoenix to bring it in to if that was an option because another exact screw isn't the solution. I did buy the Cooper STT Mud Terrains for the F250 to be proactive in case a storm actually hits, but it looks like it's going to be dry for the most part. The Yukon has Goodyear Kevlar MT's so I should be good, but the 4wd is busted. (Needs a new transfer case) Sharpened the Ken Onion skinner- hoping I get to use it. Im sure as the date comes closer, I'll find out more crap that broke or needs to be replaced or lost or whatever. We're going up two days early to get ready. Oh, and the Big Buddy Mr. Heater is flaming out. Thing is pretty fickle. I have to either get it cleaned up or replaced.

You absolutely can. If you're going to just grind it up, that's the easiest scenario.
-
And what a chore that would be- but I did come across this video earlier. I think it's one of the better ones:
-
For deer we gut them, throw them in the truck and take them apart at camp. Nothing really gets wasted. Elk we quarter and get everything we can, and skin them at camp- debone at home. I don't know how long it would take me to debone an elk in the field- and as stated above, keeping everything clean out in the middle of nowhere is quite a chore. It took at least a full day to debone/wrap a cow elk. With deboning, the meat is in layers. Do 1 leg (find the youtube of your choice to guide you) and you'll find it comes off one layer at a time. It used to be a huge mystery to us to process at home, but after the first deer it's self explanatory. We must have watched 4 or 5 videos to prep for it.
-
I think it was you and CatfishKev that recommended them to me. I'll be getting a couple of pairs before our next hunt! Just bought one. And when I get cut, it's while gutting, and having both hands in there trying to section it away from the ribcage. HATE that part.

Is it ok to use a bow during an elk general hunt?
-
Glad you're ok. Even more reason to get a SPOT type of thing.
-
Welcome to the site! I have the same hunt- it's never too early to learn the unit. Find the glassing points. Weather dictates a lot of this hunt.
-
Best news all week!
-
That's a dang good looking truck.
-
https://www.fenix-store.com/fenix-hp30r-led-headlamp/ It's pretty bright. But I'd get the one without the power source attachment. Cord isn't long enough.
-
Alaknak with a stove. I'm going 2 days early to prep camp and cut wood. Last year in Dec it got close to 0. Froze all the water in camp. I'll be a bit more prepared this year. See you there!
-
And get a J-13. That sucker is amazing.
-
Yeah the boys have the Ultimate Thule Bag. They're awesome. I might give this pad a go.
