when i buy a pack (not that i'm some super expert), i literally map out in my head what i need to carry and make sure the pack can accomodate it in an organized manner (Without being maxxed out on space).

i like my eberlestock x1/a2. it's not the lightest pack out there like a kuiu, but i like the scabbard option and bow bucket option to carry my weapon when im covering lots of country. it's well built and comfortable to carry with a good day hunting load.

if you can workout on the weekends you're half way there. i think 4 days of working out (with a combo weights and cardio) is plenty to maintain a good fitness level. so try and find two days if possible. when i travel, i can't count on the hotel to have a good weight system so i just focus my energy on cardio on those days (and maybe abs, etc).

300 gr SST for elk
Green Bullet replied to lionhunter's topic in Muzzleloader hunting for Coues Deer
i use 250 gr for any animal in AZ or the west for that matter. shot elk, mulies, whitetails, etc. never ran more than 40 yards....most dropped within 10. if it's shooting good at 300gr i don't think it's worth redialing in the system in at a heavier bullet size. my 2c -
it was good to see that they could drive hte ball with 1 minute left to get points on the board. horrible first half by Palmer though....if they stay healthy and have home field they have a shot.

what works for me: make sure you have a tripod (a decent one but you don't need to blow $600 to be effective....), comfortable seat ( i use a butt pad and where it around my waist like a belt...no hassels moving around with it), and i sometimes glass the same country 5 or 6 times studying it from different angles (glass, walk 100 yds, glass, etc etc). use a grid pattern..one field of vision block at a time...study the entire frame....stay disciplined on that. my first passes are typically quicker than the last ones....aside from that, just practice. once your eyes get dialed in, you start finding them faster and easier. case in point, i was at canyon lake yesterday and spotted a ram 500 yards away with my bare eyes....shooter too lol. if i haven't hunted in a while i'll be rusty at finding deer...i recognize that fact and don't get discouraged when i'm "warming up" but i know once i find the first one or two the "computer" in my brain starts processing the images faster and more robustly and it becomes much easier (Assuming there is something to see lol). Good luck!

what to bring on mid January Coues Deer hunt
Green Bullet replied to fire652's topic in Other Hunting Gear
i'm personally a 10x on the neck and 15x on the tripod type of guy. i use the eberlestock packs with the scabbard and slot hte tripod in there when i'm moving......no wrong answer just throwing out there what works for me. -
dandy! congrats.

Haha. That's a good one. I have to assume you know nothing about the company... I know enough. Their stuff is pretty good. But it's a premium product and their inability to keep up with demand means easy money for the competition and there are strong hands out there that will figure it out and start picking up that share. It's a competitive marketplace out there. I'm not saying they'll go under but their shitty supply chain will cost them half their potential. Whatever, not like I'm gonna lost sleep over it...just an observation.

Their inability to keep up with demand will kill their business in 12 mos

Find the nastiest, gnarliest canyon and that's where they will be. Enjoy the pack out.

My partner and I got lucky and bagged a couple of decent bucks. I shot the first one on Sunday at 150yards one shot dropped right there....the next day i guided my partner in the same area and we glassed a fork horn 376 yards across the canyon. At this point he was open to harvest whatever God gave him....we snuck in unnoticed to 276 yards and that buck got up to stretch...when he got up a couple of does and this bigger buck got up too...we quickly forgot that forky and my partner sealed the deal with my 50 cal T/C omega using BH209 and Hornady SST 250gr. He dropped like a ton of bricks. The pack out was a nightmare but as you guys know once it's in the truck and you have a cold beer in hand it's all good and the high fiving begins..... Overall it was a great hunt...I love that area. I was actually on that nice 7x5 with the awesome left side a couple days before the opener...but we got 5" of snow and i lost track of him...glad someone got to harvest that toad. I was in the area when they took him...looks like he didn't stray far from where i spotted him. I learned a lot of great lessons on this hunt. About hunting, about animal behavior, about the hunting unit, and about my partner (save that for another thread lol). Hopefully it doesn't take me 8 yrs to draw again. Special thanks to Lance on this site for providing me with some sage advice about how to adjust with the changing hunting dynamics and providing great encouragement. Hunt had some ups and downs but ended on an up for sure. I owe you one Lance!
