Left over tags on sale June 23rd
Red Sparky replied to Red Sparky's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in New Mexico
For residents it starts on the 22nd so I put the 23rd for anybody to buy. Go to www.wildlife.state.nm.us for all the particulars and make sure you have your ducks in a row. Then wait for the web site to crash from everybody logging in. I screwed up and put mule deer as my first choice so that is what I drew as they had about 90 left over tags. Oh well in the woods with a bow in hand beats being at home. -
So the game warden won't see them shooting from the road.

anyone else having a problem accessing the site?

I don't get redirected but it does seem to take some time to log in. -
" Why yes I do. I do have an anaconda in my pants."

I just changed mine after watching that.

Since you mentioned fly rod and NM make sure you make it up to the San Juan. World class fly fishing right there. Welcome to the site and enjoy.

Thank You to all the Veterans for fighting for our freedoms that we enjoy in this country. Most will never understand what you have gone through and still go through.

Don't forget you are basing this on a system that can change. G&F just changed the draw process for NR due to the fact NR's figured they would never draw so why apply. G&F dangled a little carrot and gave the hope of drawing to keep NR's applying. So What If: G&F gets rid of units and draws sheep hunters and then tells them where they are hunting? Kind of like what they do with antelope here in NM applying for a certain area and then assigning hunters to ranch. That would help clear out max point holders, especially if you don't buy point guard.

I was going to say if you are headed out now stay away from Alpine. We thought we would run over yesterday to have breakfast at the Bear Wallow Cafe, we were in Reserve, nothing but people over there. We would have stopped by the firefighter pancake breakfast but I forgot AZ is not on daylights savings time so I thought it was after 10 when they quit serving so we just kept on driving.

I have tried to pack camp in like you are talking about. I have a two wheeled cart like what Cabela's sells. The problem is the wheels are too wide for a single track and not wide enough to hit both tracks. I am talking about two track roads that have been closed off and never graded. What you have to do is walk down the middle of the road trying to keep the wheels even between the two tracks or keep one track between the wheels. I only had about 60 lbs. on the cart and it was a bear to the end of the road. What I am looking at making is a V like a wheelbarrow but a 20" tire. Maybe two tires about 10" apart for better stability. The wheel(s) at the bottom of the V and mainly being able to pull it with the option of pushing it. I made a single wheel before but it took two people to use it as the wheel was centered under the platform and wouldn't balance.

I have one and have built one. They suck in mud, rocks, going over downed trees, uphill, downhill. Much easier with a knife and pack frame.

Killed a 7 1/2 footer up by Cochiti Lake. Had 11 buttons on the rattles, about 5" long and where they broke off is 1/2" wide. When he opened his mouth you could have fit a softball in it. I agree some of it is optical illusion but I would not bet all is.

I just thought of something funny that could happen. Let's pick unit 10 with all the problems there. Say there were 500 tags and everybody purchased "point guard". What would happen if all 500 applicants showed up at the G&F Offices and surrendered their tags between 4-5PM the day before the hunt started. Do you think they could get all tags filled for that hunt? I know it would never happen but think if it did happen.

Take for what it is worth. My dad gave up hunting about 10 years ago. The last hunt he went on me with was in 2007 and he can't get out anymore. My uncle, not blood related but I knew him for 44 years, who we always hunted with passed away last year. Now I solo bow hunt and take my daughters out if they draw. I would choose family over any set of antlers I have harvested. I have the memories to look back on but they are just that, memories.

No...NM sucks. Go to AZ. No elk here. AZ beats NM hands down completely. The economy sucks in NM also. That and all the corrupt politicians. In NM you get 84% of the tags as a resident, no BP so you draw or don't, we know when our draw comes out. So out of the last 12 years I have been elk hunting 10 times in NM, my older daughter has been drawn 4 out of 5 times. There are no elk here so hunting is possible but success is difficult unless you road hunt and drink beer. As a resident you get to hunt the WMA's (Wildlife Management Areas) and antler less tags are resident only if you only want meat.

For me one daughter uses the Mossburg, like IA Born describes, in 20 gauge and one daughter uses the Remington 870 Youth in 20 gauge. It all depends on what fits them.

Since I am a HE Instructor here I get to talk to wardens all the time. If you spray a cotton ball with elk or deer urine and pin it to your clothes you are legal, take it off and pin it to a tree you are illegal. Spray a buck bomb and you are illegal. Also if a rancher puts out a salt lick for cows by water you are not considered baiting by the wardens. If you use a horse to block yourself to sneak up on an animal like they do antelope up in WY it is illegal. All the laws are not in the proclamation but if you follow it you should be good for the most part.

"You boys going to pull them pistols or just whistle Dixie? " Love the movie.

You can't really call it beer since most cans say "Budweiser". I have seen it though in Unit 24. When ML and archery season overlapped I was high on a ridge with a road about 1/2 mile below me. I was watching a truck on the road with two bowhunters in the bed doing about 10 mph. The funny thing is they drove right past about 10 deer without even seeing them. So I stalked down there and shot the buck about 60 yards off the road.

They don't here. It is all computerized where they put it in the register, it shows on the screen for the food prep, and they tape the receipt to the bag and put it in order.

I right now am eating a Blake's Breakfast burrito. Bacon and red chile. Their hamburgers are still pretty good but not what they were back in the 70's-80's.

Interesting article regarding the new Boquillas agreement
Red Sparky replied to bonecollector777's topic in Elk Hunting
Let's get NM right. The state game commission pays the state land office money to allow hunters to hunt state land office land with a valid license. If you want to take your kids with you onto SLO land you can't unless they have a hunting license. This is based on a yearly lease even though hunters may use the land for only two weeks. You have to follow all SLO rules which means no camping on SLO land. The game commission pays for all SLO land but if the land is landlocked by private land, you can't hunt it unless you get permission to cross the private land. Corner hopping is not legal here which means you can't access a lot of land. That means hunters are paying for about half the land they can't use. If the primary lessee of they land says it will interfere with their operations, you can't access the land even if there is public access. The SLO needs to work to get more access to SLO land for hunters but that isn't going to happen. -
Oh! You are talking about an appliance. I thought Edge shot one of his employees.

I have the same archery tag. I will be in there the first two weeks of Sept.. Send me a PM. Here is what I can tell you from the last two years elk hunting in there. You will see more elk hunters than elk or deer. If you hear bugling the few elk in there are not doing it but hunters are. The roads will be driven every day by about 20 different vehicles. That unit usually has left over tags that get sold after the draw. I will be checking out some other parts of the unit over the summer.
