  1. Got my hands on 3 more Rem 783- all in .270 and all with factory 3-9x40 scopes. They are going to be given to 3 lucky vets on a deer hunt here in TX in JAN. I took apart all 3 and cleaned them, properly remounted the scopes and adjusted the triggers down slightly. As they came out of the box all were in good shape but the scope mounting and torque on the action screws varied wildly from rifle to rifle. I torqued the action screws to 45in/lb and scope rings to 20. I boredighted then and hit the range today with the $19.99 Winchester Deer SeasonXP 130gr. They dialed in quickly. The limiting factor in the equation was the scope. Even at 100yd the glass was not great and it was difficult to focus. The large, thick crosshair made Precision difficult. My 783 .308 with a Prostaff Nikon was night and day difference. Here are the best groups of the day all 3 shot consistently. There was some shooter error but they all got at or under 1. Here is my 783 .308 with a Nikon and Hornady factory 168gr Amax. Looks like pics got rotated a little.

    Rebarreling a rifle

Is 1500 rounds an expected barrel life from a sporter weight barrel in 300wm? Maybe it is just fouled up and needs a good scrubbing with something that will remove the copper? If it really is shot out then I would give the folks at Pac-Nor a call. I've had two of their barrels that shot great. AND- I sent them a M70 and for the price of the barrel, truing the action and chambering/installing the barrel it was way less than your $1000+ mark. The turn around time was not fast.... but it was done right and it looks/shoots great. Mine was a 7RM that is now a .338wm.

    Please delete!!

I hope those guys slip up and get caught and you can get your gear back!! File the police report and def check your insurance. I had a rude surprise too when I found out there were limitations on my policy for firearms and optics. I had to add a rider to my policy as well. Since then I keep an excel document with serial numbers, make and model of everything of value-- scopes, binos, guns and I have pics of them in there and the serial numbers as well just for that reason. We will all be keeping an eye out on other forums!!

    Suggestions on Rangefinders

I didn't like the interface on the 1600B-- I like the Leupold 1200tbr that I have right now but I find the glass is a bit dark. I'm going to Cabelas soon to take a look at the Sig 2200 that is on sale and decide between those two. Don't pay more than $250 for a new Leupold-- they are on sale several times a year at Cabelas-- like right now.

Best longrange rifle out of the box < $1000

x2 on Savage LRH First 'long range' rifle I ever bought was a Savage 111LRH in 6.5x284--- fantastic rifles--- no need for extra $$ on bedding, trigger, muzzle brake. I believe they are offered in 7mm Rem Mag and 300win mag but not the RUM cartridges. Hard to beat them for the money!

I killed two bucks this year with the factory Barnes LRX 7RUM-- 145gr @3350, 26" Proof Sendero Lite. 127 yards bang flop 411 yards bang flop Neither bullet recovered, exit wounds were slightly larger than a fully expanded bullet.

    Remington 783 Review

Haha, very true, I'm used to measuring my distance metric for everything but MOA/IPHY makes the most sense to me when it comes to ballistics. Probably much to the disdain of my fellow artillerymen!
  9. Got my hands on a Remington 783 .308 about two weeks ago. It has a 4-12x Nikon ProStaff scope and the factory base/rings. I have to say that I have a very positive overall impression of this rifle and wanted to share the limited experience I've had with it. I got my hands on it the night before a hunt (not optimal I know). Let's start with the most important part- accuracy. Accuracy- The rifle was cleaned but unfired and the scope had been mounted and bore sighted by a gunsmith before I got my hands on the rifle. I didn't get to check torque on the rings/base/action screw or anything. Went to 25m, fired one shot from a front bag only, made some slight adjustments, second shot, now windage correct. Move back to 50m, third shot, windage correct, elevation still slightly low. Move back to 100m, shots 4-6 all 1", slightly low. Make elevation correction (wanted 1.5" high at 100m), two shots almost touching. Move back to 150m and hit soda can size tannerite target. Ready to go. 2hrs later in the stand, 1 shot, 1 doe, 125m, bang flop. Couldn't have been more impressed with how well the rifle shot given the conditions and one half of a box of ammo. Found out later they do pillar bed the plastic stock. Ammo- was 150gr Hornady American Whitetail Soft Point. Trigger- Unadjusted, slightly heavy but very shootable. Reminds me of an accu-trigger given the style. Once I get it adjusted I will amend the review. Aesthetics- Nice looking rifle, the stock feels much nicer than the comparable models (Axis, Ruger American, XPR), weight is slightly heavier than I expected from the look. Not crazy about the small ejection port. The 4rd detachable magazine fed flawlessly (other guys were shooting different ammo and had no issues either), replacements are $27 so don't lose it. The front sling attachment is molded in- it fits a standard Claw sling with no issue but not a Harris bipod at least that I could figure out. Probably need to drill a standard swivel stud in somehow. Overall- Couldn't be more pleased and I'm not sure you can beat that bang for the buck (under $500 total). Definitely want to tinker with bipod attachment, trigger pull and some different ammo to see just how accurate this rifle can get. This rifle might well push my Remington 700 .270 I bought before the season as my 'all purpose' rifle, out of the safe!!

    Smokers

+2 on the Traeger. Maintenance is easy, replacing parts if needed is easy and it will make you look like a pro. I picked up a 34 pro from an estate sale-- they were moving into assisted living-- I replaced the internal thermometer and the wiring for the auger unit and she runs like a champ. My first try at brisket and ribs were out of this world good. Plus its much more useful than an upright smoker.

    OK Muzzleloader Buck

Headed north from Dallas to hit up Oklahoma for a special primitive muzzleloader hunt. Percussion or flintlock guns only, lead projectiles (round ball/conical/maxi), iron sights and loose powder. I built a Traditions Deerhunter .50cal specific for this hunt. Not only did it go together relatively easily (nothings perfect but it didn't take any major fitting) but it was a tack driver at 70 yards with iron sights. Sighted her in with 75gr of RS and a 325gr conical. It was a very hot weekend in October but I had a buck pinned down to a core area from some summer scouting. The wind wasn't right first thing in the morning so I stayed out and hunted along a small drainage. As soon as the wind shifted I ran back to the truck and beelined for the spot. I snuck down to another creek bed where he had been hanging out and no sooner did I sneak 20 yards into the drainage he popped up from his bed. He hadn't winded me but must have heard me as I tried to creep across the rocks (see pic). He was on my side of the creek and started up the side hill I was on. Knowing that I was about to have an easy 20 yard shot I cocked the hammer. As soon as he heard that 'click' he dropped back down, crossed the creek and was walking quickly quartering away. I had to make 3 big steps to my right to get him in the open, lined up the sights and squeezed off, holding on the front of his chest, mid way up. Smoked billowed and I saw a small stumble before he ran out of sight. Had I just killed the biggest deer of my life? With a gun I made? I waited 20 minutes and crossed the creek. 30 more minutes passed... no hair, no blood... and no tracks with all the rock. Then a small pin prick, then a drop, then a splash...and bubbles in it all. I hustled down the trail and 75 yards away my buck was piled up. The slug entered just behind the shoulder, passed through a rib and both lungs before coming to rest just forward of the opposite shoulder, underneath the skin. He carried 11 points (6x5), weighed 140lbs dressed and is in the mid 130s (I'm hardly a pro at scoring). First drop of blood--- Never give up! Here he is! The slug!

    OK Muzzleloader Buck

Thanks guys!! Much appreciated-- OK is a two buck state so Ive back in there recently and missed his big brother with my bow... Have a few days of archery left and then I will be back with my rifle after Thanksgiving. I will say that in this area with the wide open terrain, the TTPs that I've learned on here for chasing Coues and having glass on tripod has made a huge difference!

    OK Muzzleloader Buck

Rifle-- I think it turned out nice for their entry level kit gun. Had the metal cerakoted to reduce rust with flat black as I couldn't figure a color scheme for the old 'brown'. I didn't like the way the ramrod seated so I left it out since I have a spin-jag rod I use normally anyways. Here is my skinner. A Damascus steel piece forged by my high school hunting buddy who now owns/operates Nafzger Forge.

    Glass bedding compound

I used Devcon and tan shoe polish as the release agent. Get good modeling clay to fill gaps and screw holes. I also taped off the top of the stock and then wiped off the excess bedding compound. Did 3x Rem 700s and an A-bolt in one night and they turned out fine.
