New rifle...looking for ammo. suggestion
duckhunter175 replied to iBowAZ's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
HSM-- Hands down the most accurate 'factory' ammo I've tried. I haven't shot it in .243 but I have used it in 25-06, 7RM, 7RUM, and 30/06 with outstanding results. -
You could get into a decent FFP for the $1000 budget. I found that I like the subtensions remaining the same across the entire magnification range esp when shooting the holdovers as opposed to dialing or doing the math on a SFP scope. FFP Options Burris XTR ($1100 on midway) Vortex HSLR or PST Nightforce SHV F1 I think another interesting SFP option that just hit the market is the Vortex Razor HD LH-- Their lightweight 3-15x42 weighs 16 oz and has two choices in reticle.

Two rifles back from the gunsmith this weekend!! One for reaching out and touching and one for a little closer or timber work. 1. 7RUM: Rem 700 blueprinted and bedded, Timney Trigger, APA brake, McM Edge Game Scout, Proof Research 26" Sendero Lite, Wyatts Extended Mag Box, Vortex HSLR 4-16x FFP. 2. .338wm: Model 70(LH) blueprinted and bedded, graphite black cerakote, factory stock(great wood) Pac-Nor 24" #4 contour with their 'prone brake' no ports along bottom 90 degrees, Zeiss Victory HT 1.5-6x42

Christmas in July!!
duckhunter175 replied to duckhunter175's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
9.25lbs on the scale, unloaded. 1.5" @ 200m with HSM ammo (180 HVLD) off bipod Muzzle blast is significant but the brake does it's job and the felt recoil is not bad at all!! -
Which factory ammo to extend range/accuracy of my .270?
duckhunter175 replied to Viper's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
HSM = Hunting Shack Munitions = The Hunting Shack--- built and based in Montana. They load primarily Berger bullets to high tolerances in 'factory ammo'. There is a great episode from Best of the West I think where they walked through the entire process. HSM has two different .270 loads in their Trophy Gold line--- 130gr and 150gr. I don't have any experience with all copper except for Shotgun slugs so I'll have to differ to others on terminal performance. It appears the rule of thumb for all copper bullets is they need more velocity to expand properly. -
Which factory ammo to extend range/accuracy of my .270?
duckhunter175 replied to Viper's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I had great luck with HSM in 25/06, 7RM and 30/06. I am glad to hear that the Hornady Precision Hunter line is performing well. I think that you will get your best bang for the buck if they offer it in .270. It would not surprise me if we see that line of ammo go up in price a bunch as it gets more popular. -
Christmas in July!!
duckhunter175 replied to duckhunter175's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I totaled the advertised weights of all components and got 9.5lbs... that isn't considering mill work on the receiver to open up for the extended box or opening up the stock for that barrel contour. I will get it onto a good scale this week. -

I owe you an answer on that. I believe the entire set up (minus bipod), but with Mk4 base and rings will be under 9lbs unloaded. -

Rifle stock makeover

Looks great! What did you use for the finish? -
Haven't used the Kuiu Teton but if you want light and packable I think the Kryptek Poseidon is a great value. Easy to find a set on the 'bargain' websites and it packs down tight. I've worn it several times during all day sits in the treestand here in KY during drizzle and outright rain and it stayed dry. Should be able to find it for $100ish per piece (top/bottom)

Looks like Ramon's Village?? Check out "Gofish Belize" and ask for Abby (Abner) he was a helluva guide and I was able to get on, unscheduled, in 48hrs. We had a blast out there and he tailored the trip to exactly what I was looking for.

Build a dummy round to 3.6" and see if you can chamber it. I'd also make sure your magazine dimensions will allow for 3.6" otherwise you'd end up single shot...

Petition to charge Hillary
duckhunter175 replied to Anaconda's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Signed..... Makes me sick. FBI director basically defines her actions as gross negligence (which is criminal when dealing with TS/SCI/SAP info) and she skates away. Me or any of my guys accidentally carry a cell phone into the SCIF and we are toast!! -

Pelican... it is the only one to trust. There's a reason they're used by the military for everyone from M4s to $$$$$ commo equipment.

Couple of Kentucky bucks that are local. We've had a mild winter and wet spring and as of yesterday things are looking good!
