Lance- Another work of art!! Great looking rig. I think it is getting to be project time (well after Turkey season) and I have a 300wm that will be going on a diet!
-
What factory ammo is he shooting?? 120gr?
-
Even getting the barrel broken in and a load developed after that I would probably expend 10-15 rounds through that rifle on an annual basis. Doubt I would come close to burning it up. I do my off season practice with a .223 and .308!
-
Who is running one and in what rifle?? Are you running wby factory ammo or handloading?
-
Do you anticipate any issues with magazine length and seating depth for the 160s? How any 1-8 and stability with the 160s?
-
Holding constant for weight of the rifle? Did you feel the stock design had anything to do with it? And was either cartridge easier overall to develop a load for?

Great looking rig! -
5-6 ounces counts!!

Weight savings on the bolt flute, skeletonized handle and CF knob? Would trimming the shroud help at all?
-
What scope did you try that required taller rings? I have a Z5 5-25x52... not sure medium will work

I'd see how the 300s fly out of your new rig first-- if you don't like what they do then look at dropping down in spine. I switched from Axis to the Maxima Red SD and they've shot great (70lb Hoyt Defiant).

Great choice!! I've had 3 different CVA rifles and all were incredibly accurate. I would highly recommend getting the blackhorn 209 breech plug and use BH209 exclusively as your powder. It allows you to weigh out your charges specifically and find what your rifle likes which takes a 3" @ 100 gun to 1.5" at 150, or at least it did with the ones I owned. dang good shooting for a muzzleloader. REMEMBER- with loose powder in muzzleloaders they measure off volume and not weight-- it is something like 77gr by weight of BH209 is the equivalent of a 100gr "by volume" charge-- DO NOT stuff 150gr by weight of BH209 into your gun. My optimal charge has been 82gr by weight of BH209. I shoot Harvester Scorpions 245gr with their black "crush rib" sabot. Outstanding results on deer size game. If you are hunting elk Id go up to a copper bullet. The common theme I've found with muzzleloaders is they do not achieve peak accuracy at peak velocity.

Looks like an awesome project! How will that stock design affect your cheek weld with the aperture set that high? And are you keeping the gun bone stock?
-
Let's see the iron sights you will be working with!! Do you get to do any modifications to those? Wondering what kind of combo you might be able to come up with. I know muzzleloader guys have Williams that use inserts for hunting out west where optics are not allowed. Seems like something in that style might be useful??

I live in Texas-- the area where is talking about is in a dang 'golden triangle' for whitetail hunting. Lots of great critters, the meat is some of the finest you'll take off a deer, fun terrain, great spot to light up a campfire, drink a few adult beverages and tell stories after the hunt. I went down last weekend and did some cull work and had a blast- well worth the trip!
