Chief--- LOVE THE SIGN! I bet it did cause some consternation. I really like what Fort Knox does-- They have a tiered system 1- Currently serving active/reserve 2-Service disabled vets 3-Retirees 4- Civilians. Tiers 1-3 can hunt archery and gun with OTC tags. Tier 4 can only draw for a single week for archery and for a 2 weekend (4 days) quota gun hunt. It gives service related folks to most chances to hunt. And if you are on pre or post deployment leave you get a discounted tag and can gun hunt the archery or muzzy season if it's open. This is stark contrast to Fort Sill where there are no tiers and no system to give the advantage to Soldiers or Retirees. It is to the point there where more people want to hunt than the post can support so the quality is dropping (everyone killing 1.5-2.5 year old bucks) and some guys didn't even get drawn to hunt!! Might be why they are advertising for a new game warden!!

    Blaze Orange...yes or no?

It sounds like the consensus is on the pack out. Kinda like turkey hunting in the spring. Once you cross east of the Mississippi then the orange game changes considerably both in law and safety purpose for hunter density. Does anyone use a piece of blaze clothing to call another hunter off?? Silver Bullet mentioned ethics above--- so if you are closing the distance on a bull / buck and notice another hunter, further away or in a less advantageous position is there any way to signal that you are there and moving on that animal? Maybe they haven't seen what you have and are just moving along the area? I was bowhunting for elk, watching a nice bull feed down a drainage to me when two guys popped over the top of the ridge, blind cow calling, never saw the elk and pushed him out the other side where another guy was hunting and shot him. Maybe if I had a blaze hat to wave they'd have seen me and held tight? The other hunters that is... not the elk, it would be nice if you could flag them down with orange.

Chief-- All great points! I've found that most military installations I've hunted (Sill, Hunter AAF, Stewart, Knox) have well resourced offices but also have some stringent and uncommon regs that are easy to run afoul of... and then the whole weapons registration piece. Now having to register individually at each base can be a pain. How are things at Huachuca with provost marshall office and the hunt control office?

    Brand new hunter

OZ-- Were you 1C4?? The A-10 is the best, bar none, CAS platform in inventory. I do say that with respect to the AC-130, which excels in precision but didn't have the UMPH of the bombs available from an A-10. Lucky to have worked extensively with both in my time.

Ronin- Decided on 140gr Amax for the 6.5 and my backup rifle is my 25/06 with 110gr accubonds. Question for all--- What do you do, if anything, for scent control? I'm used to a very strict approach for eastern whitetails.

    Gun mistakes

Mossberg Maverick O/U-- Won it at a DU banquet, 12ga, shot skeet with it and bottom barrel stop firing. Barrel weld had broken and bottom barrel was 1/4" out. Sent to Mossberg, requesting replacement gun or credit because receiver might have been damaged. Took 9 weeks to get a new set of barrels, never replaced anything else even the foregrip (I marked the pieces before mailing). Traded in towards Beretta Silver Pigeon. Never will ever own a Mossberg or related gun after.

Staying cool in a hot blind

Socks.... hear me out. You can go with the frozen water bottles too but this will keep your water cold and drinkable at the same time. Take your 20oz plastic water bottles filled with water and put one into a sock. Get the sock wet... dip it in a tank or creek or whatever and then hang it up in your blind. As the water evaporates it will cool the bottle and the water inside. Best part is that it is 'rechargeable', just add water. Used this trick on long patrols where after the first few hours you have no cool water and its 110 in the shade.

Need a AZ Topo? Free Download suitable for a GPS

PRDATR and others--- I just found my older 60csx. It was in an old army ruck and hasn't been carried, turned on or updated for at least 4-5 years. In the meantime I used my wrist garmin, phone and topo maps. Since I am hunting in AZ for the first time this year I want to get the 60csx updated with any firmware and then try to download these topos. What is the best way to execute these updates since it has been such a long period and has anyone had issues or experience with older 60csx units? This was purchased back in 2007.

    Riflescope Mounting

Most gun stores will mount scopes but only if you buy some of the components at their store. A gunsmith will do it but honest you can knock it out at home easily. A lot of guys like the Burris Zee Rings, Leupold makes received specific mounts with dovetail fittings. If you are trying to keep it simple then DNZ makes great aluminum one piece systems that don't need to be lapped. I personally like Talley One-Piece for 1" tube scopes. Very lightweight. Depending on the recoil of the rifle and specific set up there will be lots of opinions to follow. If this is a general purpose rifle and not a long range or heavy hitting caliber then you won't need specialized bases (picatinny, 20moa, etc etc) As far as the mounting goes--- You won't get exact specifications with just the small wrench provided with ring sets so it will be hard to get the recommended 20 in/lbs of torque. The key is to NOT over tighten the rings on the scope. Some blue locktite to ensure the screws stay in place you will be ok. For aligning and zeroing there is a good thread on the 'Rifle Hunting Coues' page of the forums. Some use a mirror, some use a hanging string to line up the vertical cross hair (level) and get a zero that will get them on paper before the range. Many more experience guys will have some good advice as well.

Good news--- the 140gr Amax handloads are shooting very well. I've been getting to the range once a week and will continue to until October. Weather here is a bit humid but in the 80s so I shouldn't see too much temp variance when I get to 34a in 9 weeks!! Still working on refining the packing list a little for what I will carry in and what I will carry in my 'day pack'. Has anyone used the 'Hunt Maps' GPS stuff for their garmin and how accurate/worthwhile is it??
