Nah, Trump will have it done in 2 years, half price and have drone surveillance near construction to engage anyone within 2 miles from the south.., or at least that what everybody wants to believe. Edit: forgot to call out your realistic views as leaning a little too far left, boy!

I went out yesterday SE part of the valley, bad idea... water everywhere. Don't even know where to look for the birds when its like that. Hopefully the chilly/frost last night paired with all the moisture around there didn't kill a bunch of birds.

You're dang right they would. I find it comical and embarrassing how guys get over the stuff. -
Srsly guys, can we forget about the bickering amongst the ph@ggots that don't even lift and get back to the original purpose of this thread... which I believe was to flame some non-poachers??

Spontaneous quail hunt
brademan76 replied to sherman's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Good work! I went solo Sunday and doubled on two covey rises but never could find the broken up birds. Shot a single later and then missed on two pointed singles, one of those days. If I could've found any of the coveys I busted up, maybe I'd have been touching your number. -
I'm happy to report that the tanning worked well for me. I've got a backskin and a full skin of axis deer that I would've probably paid $200 bucks to have done professionally. For all I'm using them for they'll work great. Not as pliable as others I have that were professionally done, but I believe if I worked them a little more and sanded them a bit thinner, they would be very comparable. The process really isn't that bad, and honestly its hard to screw up. Glad I did it as now I will be more comfortable doing it again in the future. Another note, I fleshed my hides with a power washer... worked great!

The ones that cause the most grief are the best ones! Neat bull too.

Christmas Cholla... I target this stuff in New Mexico when hunting scaled quail. They eat the little pears/fruit whole!

Thanksgiving Crane

Cool, thanks for elaborating a bit! Approximately how many decoys do you set? Looks like you might get a PM from me if I ever draw the tag! -

Very cool! I ran into a group of them on Sunday sitting in a freshly planted wheat filed. Wish I would've had a tag! So how did the hunt work? Were you just sitting in a field where they had been feeding? Is where you are in the photo (seated next to the wheel of a pivot) actually where you hunted from? Decoys (silhoettes, full-bodies?), calling, etc? Details man! -
Can't make any antlers in the pic man.

Upland of a different feather

Is the civet cat still alive? They're the ones who eat the coffee beans right? -
I just applied tanning solution to the a couple of deer hides last night using a kit I bought at Cabela's. Hoping to get them finished before the end of the week and will let you know how it worked. http://www.cabelas.com/product/the-tannery-basic-home-tanning-kit/1613656.uts

Upland of a different feather

Great pictures and story, and a unique bird! Glad to see you're able to make the most of the time you're spending there. I was in Namibia this past July, and while everyone was so worried about shooting their big game trophies, I was enamored with the sand grouse and their version of the francolin, which is a drab gray color. Shot a couple of them with a .22 and skinned out to sneak back in my suitcase, but forgot it in the lodges fridge unfortunately. -
Sounds good, but go figure I'll be out of town for work the 3rd-8th, but will be ready to chase them after that.

A breeding pair meaning a gamble's and a scaled quail producing the scrambles, or are you saying you've got a male and a female scramble that breed together and have offspring? If the F1 scramble is able to breed, then I would imagine the F2s would be able to as well.
-
Awesome, sounds like you've stumbled onto a good mearns spot! Scramble's?!?! I'll be standing by for an invite

Hunted an area in New Mexico where there were loads of scaled quail last year. This year we saw maybe about 10% of the numbers. We were able to scratch 15 birds between two of us on Sat and another 6 birds in 3 hours on Sunday. Friend is speculating that the heavy, flooding rains they experienced in September drowned/killed a lot of chicks. Of the birds we bagged, only 4 or so were YOY and they were extremely small and didn't have adult feathers yet.

Where'd you get her? -
SO HAS ANYONE BEEN OUT LATELY?? This forum is dead, I know some of you have to have been out... especially with the cooler weather within the last couple weeks. Last I was out was Nov 2nd on the back side of the catalinas surveying the cover more than anything. The shorthair's shoulder was bothering him so I didn't even pull out the shotgun but saw great habitat and quite a few birds along the two-tracks. I don't have any recent reports due to being out state for work, however I'll be in New Mexico this weekend looking to bomb on some scalies, weather should be great!

Nice, looks like two good males! Chickens are my favorite bird to hunt. Did you pass shoot them or were you able to walk into them?

Niiiiice!! How'd Mags do on the roosters?
