    Bear Opener

There is also an annual limit? They close it because it is hard to identify male vs female and dont want females to be shot? once my foot heals up I plan on doing some scouting, I’d like to hunt in october probably in 5b if open, but most likely not going to happen.

    Bear Opener

I’ve not hunted bear before, I am trying to understand the regs. Does the female harvest limit control whether the unit is open or not? Once that is hit they close it for male and female?
  5. Trying to decide which reticle to go with on a Zeiss v4, I mostly hunt, would like to get comfortable shooting out to 500yrds. Going on a .308.
  6. I just picked up a 336 from 1995, the gun looks to be in great shape, the bluing looks great with no signs of rust, but when wiped with hoppes oil the white paper towel comes out looking like there is a layer if rust? (See pictures) how can I remove this layer completely? Or do I leave it alone since I cant see it?

    Need Marlin 336CS JM help!

Have another question. I think I might replace the butt pad, the one that is on it seems dry and very hard, it is the original marlin one. Do you guys have any suggestions as to butt pads to look at? I would prefer to do little to no shaping and would like to stick with a brown pad.

I will get some brass 0000 wool and give it a go, wool with oil applied? Or dry wool then apply oil after?
  9. I “recently” had a v4 4-16 x 50 scope replaced through zeiss. I say recently because this process took quite some time. After a 3 or 4 weeks of processing I finally get a scope in the mail, Shows up overnight from the shipping notification. Excitedly open the box, and I was sent a 4-16 x 44. Get on the phone with zeiss next business day and explained what happened. I am told that the 44 is better because I can mount it closer to the bore axis and wont notice the lack of light gathering capability and I should just keep it. I explain I already have rings mounted to the gun for the 50 and dont want to buy and mount new rings so no benefit there, Replies “well maybe you want to buy new rings”...”you should consider keeping the 44”. Fed up with talking to the guy I say I will consider it, with the intent of calling back the next day to talk to someone else. Send the 44 back and find out the original reticle I ordered is now out of stock but there is one “b class” that came back from a dealer and can be sent as a replacement. I told them that is fine AS LONG AS IT CHECKS OUT AS NEW. Get an email, Scope has been inspected and is brand new.... get the scope, open the box.... (see picture) I know it is very minimal, but I sent a pristine scope, that had only a internal manufacture defect and was told the scope I am getting checks out as brand new. I am very careful with my guns and try very hard not to damage them. Kinda disappointed with the whole experience I’ve had with them. Rant over. There glass looks great but that experience will probably steer me clear of their products in the future.

Not so great Zeiss warranty experience

I would have preferred getting my old scope fixed and sent back to me as it was well taken care of with no external blemishes, I sent it in because the illuminated reticle would intermittently come on. I had no intent of getting a new scope, but they told me they dont repair, they destroy the old one and send a new one. I sent them an email, They are going to take care of me, no questions or arguing.

Would you use brass wool even if there isnt any visual indication of rust? The gun looks deep blue but a white paper towel shows different?

Not so great Zeiss warranty experience

Im sure they will take care of it if I want to send it back. Just frustrating, a month and a half and two scopes later, the guys there have been very nice; even the guy telling me to keep the 44, that was just odd for customer service I thought.

What oil or protective coating do you recommend for blued finished? From the description on the bottle I thought the no. 9 was sufficient for preserving/protecting the blue.

Good to know, I typically try to keep all my oils away from the wood on my guns, but I will keep an eye on the no. 9 specifically.

I dont think im going to worry too much, the rust color come off whether is use the high precision hoppes oil, gun bore cleaner, or shooters choice fp-10 clp. The gun looks pretty good other wise. (Need to replace loading gate screw, left out on purpose)

This makes sense, barely made it through the first sentenced and realized what happens, makes total sense.

    Getting into Reloading

Im in Tempe, Az. I dont completely understand this one, are you saying cause you leave excess space in the case that a powder burns so fast it builds too high of pressure before the bullet begins to leave the case? It is obvious to me that overloading could be an issue, never considered under loading, very interesting. Would make a fun fluid dynamics/thermo dynamics problem.
  19. Been thinking about getting a new shotgun to start hunting with instead of my old winchester 1200 pump. Was leaning towards an auto loader. Liked the looks and action of the franchi affinity 3, would probably do the upland elite version pictured. Any experience with them or other gun suggestions? Want to stick with 12 ga, 28” barrel, used for quail and dove, around $1000 max.

    Which rifle to brake?

I wasnt aware of the youth hunt, thats what I was getting at; been in eligible for youth hunts long enough that I dont remember regs and dont have kids yet. Typed words dont do a very good job of portraying sarcasm. I agree 243 is a great cartridge and very capable

    Getting into Reloading

Tons of good advice, I will definitely be re reading this to learn as much from y’alls experience as possible. I have a buddy that reloads and is pretty experienced in it, I think I will go help him a few times to get my head around the process and all steps involved before I dive into getting my own bench set up. JTB, i recently discovered a Forsters co ax press it looks pretty sweet, it is definitely on my list but seems to be sold out everywhere. Looks to be stout and slop free like a single stage but as quick as a turret press on tool changes

    Getting into Reloading

Are there manuals from a specific source that will be more beneficial? I think I might need to get one and read it prior to purchasing the equipment as I dont know all the components I should consider.
  23. bowhunter-tw

Which Zeiss reticle would you choose?

Dang, that's pretty cool! my only hesitation would be that it restricts you to one load right? other that those sound sweet! Will definitely take a look at them.

    Which rifle to brake?

Maybe I missed something in the regs, Is there a youth doe hunt or something? I didnt think doe were legal here, Either way made myself laugh. Deer I shot with my dad’s took two steps and dropped. .243 is definitely a great cartridge looking for one myself and gonna get into reloading eventually, sounds like you have some great knowledge and experience with that round.
