They are all over southeastern AZ. They tend to run in packs of 2 - 20. They are concentrated in the canyons and riparian areas. They feed on nuts, berries, insects & small mammals. Once the leaves are on the ground, just hike slowly through the canyons listening for a lot of raucous in the leaf litter. They dig through the fallen, dead leaves looking for food. If you do see a pack of them, you can run right at them and they will "tree" themselves. Given the chance, they will slip away, but their first instinct when threatened is to head straight up the nearest tree. Lots of them on Mt. Graham (Unit 31, south of Safford). -

Thanks for the pics & the story. CONGRATS! -
Google earth is a great way to see what water has been around long-term. With the history feature, you can go back to several different years & see what showed up. Also, vegetation is a tell-tale sign. No lush vegetation means water has likely not been around long-term.

Love the story. Thanks for taking the time! Memories that will last a lifetime. -
It's been a very wet late summer / fall. Seasonal streams are all running well. Lots of the springs that have been dry for years are wet this year. You shouldn't have any problem finding water to filter. If you're backpacking, just pay attention to the wind & stay alert. These deer are very wary, but I've had lots and lots of close encounters while out hiking if the wind is right. If you have the late December hunt, you'll be at the start of the rut. Should be able to key in on does & the bucks won't be far away. There are plenty of places to backpack in the Pinalenos. people don't stray too far from the roads, which gives you an advantage if you're willing to put a few miles on your boots.
