Got a sweet deal on a new bow - Mathews No-Cam HTR
mattys281 posted a topic in Bows, arrows, broadheads
So after my diamond bow took a dump on me a couple weeks ago, I went back & forth between repair or replacing it. In the end, I decided to do both. I like it enough to not want to retire it yet, so he's currently at Bowtech getting warranty work done, and in the mean time I went shopping. I've been eye-balling Mathews No-Cam's online ever since they came out, as I think this is probably the most innovative bow I've seen in the last 10 years at least. After a few days of watching different bows on ebay & checking out AT, I came across an ad Texas Archery (www.thebowzone.com). They're clearing out this year & last year models to make room for the 2017 bows, so they have some pretty slick deals going on. I picked up a brand new in the box 70# 29" No-cam HTR for $750 to my door. That's a hard deal to beat and the shipping was fast (showed up in 5 business days). I've had it for a couple weeks already, but didn't get time to put it together & start playing with it until today. This bow does not disappoint. It's not incredibly fast (only about 7 or 8 fps better than my Black Ice), but it's incredilby smooth on the shot and quiet. If you're in the market for a new bow, I highly recommend talking to these guys, could save you hundreds. -

http://www.coueswhitetail.com/forums/topic/68064-looks-like-im-in-the-market-for-a-new-bow-rip-tank-rip-my-friend/ Limb gave out on it. Just got it back the other day, and I have to say that overall I'm very impressed with bowtechs response time. When I first contacted them on a Saturday morning, they responded to me with return instructions within 3 hours. Pretty impressive for a weekend. Then when I shipped it to them after a few days I got the delivery notification from ups. The following morning I had an email from them saying it was fixed and had been shipped back already. Less than 24 hours to fix and send back. Overall, I think bowtechs warranty work is 1st rate. They stand behind their products and haul butt to fix your gear if something goes wrong. But.... the very best customer service is the one you never need. Hopefully I never need to find out how good mathews warranty is. Broken limb: -
The greedy pay twice. I had one of their spotters a coupe years ago, returned it inside of a week. Overrated is the polite term.

Fluting a Factory Heavy Barrel?
mattys281 replied to Hoss50's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
A year or so ago I had a guy thats a partner in a custom rifle manufacturer over in cali approach me about fluting some barrels for them. I asked him point blank is the gain really that significant? He said it does lighten them up a little (obviously), greater surface are is supposed to help with heat dissipation (although theyd never actually tested it), but mostly people just think it looks cool, so it helpsto sell rifles. If it were my money, I'd invest in something that would gain me more than cool looks, unless you plan on swapping the barrel anyway, then what the heck, whip out the credit card and go crazy! -
Nice! Two down, only about a hundred million to go...

Thanks for the tip, I'll try to get in touch with them.

Thats outstanding! Hopefully they'll be off the street for a while.

I like it a lot. Its the smoothest shooter I've ever had. Its a little heavy for my taste, but its very quiet and shoots so smooth that it feels slow. Virtually no string jump at all.

Most, if not all, manufacturers recommend to back the limb bolts out before pressing the bow. Do not skip this step! Otherwise you are likely to over compress the limbs in your bowpress and this WILL damage them. You may get away with it a couple times, but you're still damaging the limbs. Mathews recommends 5 full limb bolt turns from bottomed on my No-cam, and I think Diamonds recommendation was 4x turns on my old black ice. If in doubt, contact the manufacturer. Also, find a bow press that presses from as close to the cam axles as possible, like an EZ press or one of those giant X-bar thingies with the wheels. Limbs are designed to flex across their entire length, so once again you can damage them by apply force to the wrong part of the limb. Don't put your high-dollar bow in some POS cheapie press that can ruin it. I have a brand new EZ press I just bought and have changed about a million strings, if you are in the Phoenix area and want some help feel free to stop by. I'm out in Avondale.

Tried to start a poll but it didn't work ?
mattys281 replied to Eagle mountain ranch's topic in The Campfire
This is why she is going to steal the election. I'm not so certain. I think he has a better chance conducting himself as he did tonight then he would name calling and flinging mud. 80% of the voters are already decided to this side or that. Now they compete for the voters that are undecided and thinking it over. He has to present himself as a leader, not as a brawler. Next weeks polls will be interesting, I think he may have gained some. -
You find some nice ones out there. NIce buck!

I watched what I could while doing a set up on my lathe, but it was hard to hear over the sound of the american economy being boosted in my garage. From what I heard, I felt like trumpnado did pretty good. He had some bite about the gov pissing money away and making incredibly poor trade deals, back up with the statement that his personal income was $695m last year, and isnt that who you want making trade deals and dealing with the budget??? Hillary resorted to personal attacks, but I felt like trump actually presented himself as having something to offer. Bit as I said, I only heard maybe a third of it. -
Everybody knows that the most basic aspect of bow maintenance is to keep your string in good condition, keep it waxed, and replace it when it's worn out. Simple right? Well, this one got me recently. My string has always been well waxed, and was not damaged any where. Still basically looks brand new, so I hadn't realized how long it had been since I changed it. Turns out it's been about 2-1/2 to 3 years. So I take my bow out to do some shooting a couple weeks ago and it just feels sluggish. I notice that my arrows are fishtailing a little and while my 20-50 pins seem ok, my arrows are dropping like a lead balloon between 50 & 60. I go home and break out the tools. Chronograph shows 261, on an unfletched arrow. That's down from my previous reading of 275-280ish with a finished arrow. Ok, so maybe the string is shot. I measure the brace height & ATA, both are exactly to spec. But then I put it on my bow scale, and here's the tell-tale sign. Draw weight on my 70# bow is reading 57# with bottomed out limbs. Put a new string and cable on it, and now I'm back up to 68# and throwing 'em out there at 285-287. I couldn't tell you how many strings I've changed over the years, but I have never checked before & afters on it (probably because I never had a chrono before). I find it really weird that the string is strong enough to maintain the bows geometry, but then when you pull it it stretches like an old rubberband. Guess you learn something new every day.

Seems like theres so many good manufacturers anymore, its really kind of overwhelming. Im not a real fanboy of any manufacturer over the other, but I'd say dont get wrapped up in the speed craze. I would not buy anything with less than 6" brace height or shorter than 32" axle to axle. I have a 29" draw length and have tried shooting a 30" bow and in my opinion it was too short and had too sharp of a string angle at full draw, it made for a very harsh unforgiving shot. I personally like an arrow set up that shoots about 270-280 fps. For me that seems like a good compromise between being fairly flat shooting, forgiving and quiet. As for broadheads, stay away from anything with aluminum in it. There are a lot of all steel heads out that offer very real advantages. First, no matter what the advertiser says, absolutely nothing with aluminum in it is ever going to hold up as well as a steel head if it hits bone. Also, steel heads typically have a much shorter profile which means they dont change the overall length, spine and f.o.c. of your arrow as much as an aluminum one (compared to field points), so they are easier to make group with your field points.

Thats awful! Dishonest people usually like to brag and show off, hopefully some one will hear or see something.

Not so much to me. Most of the really old ones ive seen had a bit of a sway back and the old roman nose. This guy looks like hes right around the summit, but not to far over the hill. Im certainly no expert though.

Awesome bull! Congrats.
