The end of a long journey, and the beginning of another

I think with a properly tuned bow and a helical fletching it probably doesnt matter at all, but when I was shoot fb heads I used to fletch the arrows first and then glue in the inserts with broadheads on so I could time all the blades exactly the same. I also would spin test them to make sure they were all running true and weigh all the finished arrows to make sure they're all exactly the same. Only thing I didnt check was the spine because I never got around to buying the gage to do it. I figured that the less variation the better, especially if you shoot longer ranges. Now I just say tahellwithit and shoot whatever I find in my bow case. I had a lot more free time back then.

I just went through that in october when my buddies cousin shot a doe back in Nebraska. 3 of us looking for hours and the blood trail just vanished. Crappy situation.

Outstanding hunt. Thanks for sharing and congrats to both of you!

Awesome buck! Congrats to you and good job on sticking to a nasty trail! -
Time for some Binocs. So... 8x or 10x... and Why?
mattys281 replied to azcoyote's topic in The Campfire
I carry 10x42 around my neck. Nice and lite weight, small enough to hold steady by hand and big enough to be useful on a tripod. My range finder has a 7x magnification so in thick timber treestand hunting I dont even take the binos anymore, I just use the range finder. My leica rangefinder is clearer than my monarch binos are anyway. I think my next upgrade will be to sell off my minox 15x and buy a top end 10x do-all bino from leica. -
Rage 3-blade broadhead SUCK!?!?!
mattys281 replied to AZ_Native's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Ive lost two animals, both to fixed blade heads. After the second, I switched to mechanicals. I figure that everyone makes a marginal hit once in a while, so if your shot is not perfect the bigger hole you can make the better. I've only hit three animals with mechanicals so far and all have left great blood trails, two dropping within sight. Ive never used rages but i know that dang near any head will blow right through ribs and lungs, so if animals are being lost it probably shot placement more so than the quality of the head. -
Singleshot: That as a pretty incredible testimonial. Those wounds are awesome! I never thought to take pics of the wounds, but I'll definetely pay closer attention on the next one. The last three deer I've killed have all been with the g5 t3 expandable heads and they blow through deer like theyred made out of paper at 40 yards and less. All my heads have been intact and useable again, just needed to change blades.

AZGFC'S Concideration of Fair Chase Terms
mattys281 replied to elkaholic's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
I'm not one of the they're-always-screwing-us kinda guys, but this really doesn't sound like a: "Hey, just to let you know, get ready to kiss some butt" type sitchy-ation. Sounds a lot more like a: "brace yourself!" then you just try to relax as much as you can kinda deal. Vague doesn't even begin to cover that verbage. -
AZGFC'S Concideration of Fair Chase Terms
mattys281 replied to elkaholic's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Well that settles it. From now on im only hunting in my camo onesie pajammas with a stick bow in my hand and a single granola bar in my pocket. I wont even pack water, that might be construed as carrying an 'attractant', besides real sportsmen just drink out of the scummy, muddy cattle ponds anyway. I guess if that doesnt make me unlikely enough to succeed, then I'll head over to the many office and start handing out fistings to every one. Trophy hunter, you coming too? I may not have enough fists to go around. -
AZGFC'S Concideration of Fair Chase Terms

Number 3 is interesting. What implications does "a practice that makes taking wildlife almost certain" have towards guides who boast a 100% success rate? Doesnt get any more certain than that. -
You should tell your friend to stop trying to hard.... LOL Can't get in touch with him any more. Last I heard, he quit his job and moved to Wyoming. I ain't going up there to look for him. I just think it's really sweet the way you two have let us all bare witness to your blossoming man-crush/bromance . It's like a really messed up cwt version of When Harry Met Sally.... or may of The Odd Couple, I'm not sure witch. I can't wait to see what happens next!

Helicals steer much better. The trade off is they do bleed off speed a little quicker due to more drag on the tail end, but you'll likely never notice the difference at ranges less than 50 yards. If you are currently shooting straight fletches, you'll probably have to resight your long range pins, but the difference is not huge.

If you are certain your bow is tuned the problem may be you and not your equipment. Peope have a tendency to drop their bow immediately after releasing which brings the arrow down with the bow. With a fb broadhead if you drop your bow and the arrow the blades on the head will have a downward bias as the arrow clears your riser, causing the arrow to dip more drastically the further you are from the target. Its very common for this problem to become more pronounced towards the end of a practice session when your arms are getting tired. Make sure its not you before you start fiddling your gear. Concentrate on good follow through of your shots and not only will your broadheads start grouping closer to your field points but your field points will probably start grouping a little higher too.

One of the guys I used to work with told me that movie was disgusting! He said it made him throw up in his mouth the first 3 times he watched it.

Anything is possible, but most non-hunter hikers don't have the stomach to decapitate a critter... I'm thinking this is a "if you hear hoof beats, don't think Zebra!" kinda scenario. It's most likely exactly what it seems, some weekend warrior shot a deer than either didnt know what to do with it so they just took the head or the just flat didn't care. Either way, es no bueno for the image of hunters. Careful....wknd warriors have a right to be in the field, too. Lark might take offense to your stereotype. Clearly it's guides that are the problem. I'm sure it was a high paying client who had help from above, only to radio to the "hunter" the bucks location. But after ground checking the buck did the hunter and cohort realize that they always look bigger from the sky. Or.....its some moron who has no regard for the animal or the law. If I were a bettin' man Your point is not in dispute. I have nothing at all against a weekend warrior hunter, theres nothing wrong with not being a fanatical hunter. Heck, I'll be happy if I get to be a weekend warrior this year, probably I'll end up just looking at everyone else's pictures with jealousy. My money would also be on the disregard for the law, but its possible that its ignorance. I would be surprised if it was some other part removing the head of someone else's deer, but I guess that does happen sometimes.

I would bet me life that the javi's in 37b have a network of old mine tunnels figured out or something. There are days when they're every where, you can't hike a minute without tripping on one, and then I can't find a single pig for 2 or 3 days after. The last one I shot in that unit I got onto on the afternoon of the first day, the one before that took me about 7 days just to locate the first herd. As for 33, I've yet to see javi's in that unit, although I know some guys who do pretty well down there around Oracle. Whichever unit you pick, good luck, stay positive and just keep after it.

I don't see twenty guys all huddled around the deer or a watermark, so it definitely wasn't recent. Great pic & thanks for sharing!
