That deer has elk-like mass and might make 120-125 on beams+mass. That still leaves a lot of ground for G1's, G2's and spread. I wonder what it scores without junk.

What others have said about 7x57. It will buy you a couple of grains of powder capacity over the 7-08. In modern actions with the 150 grain Partition, it would be a great cow elk gun. You can expect 2550-2650 fps with tame loads and over 2800 pretty easily without pressure signs of you step it up. Partitions aren't the prettiest girl at the dance but they do their job on elk, and that's what counts.

They are the 800 lb gorilla in that stream and I watched a 30 flathead chase bluegills out from underneath an overhang every 5 minutes during my lunch/rehydrate break. Hit them on a good trip with spinning gear and and you will change your reel seat to the next finger groove down on day two. It is amazing. You wake up in your hammock feeling like you were bowling with cheerleaders. Average of 12 inch fish makes 5wt feel inadequate.

May be your best option. 30-06 is my elk caliber. Caveat on that, I like to get close.

Summer of '87 fishing for browns on 9 Mile creek in upstate NY. It started a lifelong obsession and I don't regret a minute of it. So far, smallies out of the black river on a 5 wt are my favorite though. They will sky like a rainbow and make you think twice about going in with a 5wt.
