Body is a little dirty, but clean up great. Listing for a friend. He is asking $750 obo. Contact him at 928-614-1891. His name is Phil. Thanks for looking.
  2. Well guys, I'm back from my first coues hunt with my buddy. What a trip, and what an experience. We started off the trip leaving northern AZ around 3 am on the 3rd. Climbing the hill into Flag we started to smell antifreeze. Uggg, this is how this hunt is going to start out. Lol. We pull over and find a small coolant hose that had a pin hole leak in it. We sat in front of napa waiting for them to open to get some hose, and get back on the road. So we finally get on the road again and finish the 8.5 hour trip to Patagonia, Az. We get to camp finally (luckily one of our friends let us stay on his small piece of property for the hunt, which gave us running water, and power for the hunt), and got everything set up. We had a few beers, and did some looking at the map to get familiar with the unit that night, and got our packs ready for the next morning. We woke up early, drove to a spot of interest, parked, and made the hike into our first glassing spot. As the sun comes up, we start glassing. As the sun gets higher and higher, we notice we're not the only ones hunting this canyon. In fact there are 4 other people hunting this same spot. Crap. They didn't seem to care we were there so we continued on. We ended up glassing 8 does, and not one buck. That evening we went to a new spot to glass some more. Only to find that the new spot had more hunters in it than the first spot. Crap. But once again we stuck it out, and glassed up 11 does, and a spike! We let him go, and concluded our first day of the hunt. Over the next 4 days, we found a lot of the same except we finally made it away from the crowd. We saw probably 125 does over the course of the hunt, 4 spikes, one 1x2, one 2x2, and one small 3x3 in total. With only 2 days left in the hunt, I decided that my goal of shooting a big mature coues buck wasn't going to happen, and that I was going to take the next buck I saw, so that I could at least say I was successful on my first coues hunt. The next morning I had my buddy drop me off at 4:30 am, and I made the hour and a half hike to the top of a hill I could glass 4 different canyons from at the same spot. I had my breakfast and redbull in the dark as I waited for the sun to come up. As soon as the sun came up I was already finding deer, but once again no bucks. After over an hour, 3 new deer came walking into the canyon to my left. I put my glass on them, and I see doe, another doe, and a spike! Lol. I watch them and I struggle with the choice of taking this buck. But after watching him for 30 minutes, I decide to take the shot. I range the deer, and it shows 585 yards! I put in my dope into my ballistics program, and adjust my scope for 585 yards, and a 10 mile an hour cross wind. I try and get as comfortable as I can on my shooting sticks, and take a deep breath. I start to squeeze the trigger, and pow......... smack! The buck dropped in his tracks dead as a door nail. I hit him right in the chest right behind the shoulder. Officially the smallest deer I've ever shot. Lol. Took the shot from the top of here. My buddy helping me out (he was over in the next canyon). The next day walking into a new canyon, this little guy ran out in front of us, and stood there. My buddy couldn't pass him up, so he shot him with his 6.5 grendel at a whopping 50 yards. Lol. So after it was all said and done, we didn't get our trophy coues bucks. But we did learn a lot about hunting coues, and we did fill our tags. We had a great trip, and plan on coming back to hunt the grey ghost again! What a blast it was getting to hunt these little guys. I know some of you might get mad that we took immature bucks, and that's fine. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. But this was a long trip for us, and we hunted hard. We weren't part of the road hunting crew, and we put many miles on our boots, cactus and fox tails in out legs and feet, and bruises on our asses sliding down hills in the dark. For a completely brand new unit, and our first coues hunt, I'm pretty proud of us honestly. But we will be back again, you can count on that.

    6.5-300

Isn't the barrel life really really short with these? I've read as few as 600 rounds. I'd burn a barrel up in no time. 40-50 rounds for barrel break in, and 50+ finding the best load. Ouch.

Day 4 Stink Pig /1st Ever

Day one of the hunt started with me shoveling snow all day trying to dig my camper out of the yard. Ugg. Day two I finally got out and spent the day humping hills, and glassing with no luck. Day three I spent humping hills, and glassing some more. At the end of the day I finally spotted 2 pigs about 629 yards away. I couldn't get setup for a comfortable shot, so I let them walk. Day four I went back to the same spot I had seen the pigs the day before. After 3 hours of nothing, I got up and moved a ridge deeper into the unit. I sat down and heard a pig squealing over the NEXT ridge. I packed up, and moved to the next ridge. I started glassing, and couldn't find the pigs making the noise. But I did spot a big Male bobcat. I moved in closer for a shot, and spotted the pigs. They were all huddled up under a tree. I setup for a shot, and my 7 saum found its mark at 309 yards. I tried to get on the cat after the pig, but I was too slow. I went over to where the cat was sitting, and found a baby javelina dead. The cat had bit his throat and killed it. All in all it was a great hunt. I probably should have shot the bobcat first, but I've killed plenty of Bobcats, and I really wanted to get a pig under my belt. I capped it, and it's off to the taxidermist.

    7mm Mag or 300 WM ?

    Now that's impressive!!
  16. PowellSixO

    7mm Mag or 300 WM ?

Yes, hands down the RUM. I've considered building either a 300 rum or a 30-378 wby mag as my next rifle. I want to start playing with ELR.
  17. PowellSixO

    7mm Mag or 300 WM ?

You are correct. All I was trying to point out, is that a 7 rem mag will at some point surpass the win mag in drops and wind drift. I was incorrect at the distance the 7 mag would exceed the win mag (in some cases), but not in every situation. With my personal experience, I could only run the win mag up to 2750 fps with most of the heavy bullets, and I could run the 7 mag at 2900-2950 fps. In that situation, the 7 mag did pass my win mag around the 500-600 yard area. I should have been more clear with my wording. The win mag hits harder, and carries more momentum. Truth. Both have their ups and downs. For me personally, the 7 rem mag is better. I can hunt up to 1000 yards comfortably, and I can punch steel and paper (while remaining above the speed of sound) out to 1500 yards. The 7 mag is flatter and has less wind drift (with my setup), at 1500 yards which makes my shooting more accurate (more predictable). It's also more efficient. It uses less powder, has less recoil, and costs less to reload for. For me it was the right choice.

    7mm Mag or 300 WM ?

Why is it so funny? Facts are facts. I don't make the bullets, or the ballistic calculators. I've personally tested the 300 win mag side by side with a 7mm Rem Mag. I have experience with the Berger 230 Hybrid, the Berger 195 EOL, the Hornady 180 ELDM, and the Hornady 225 ELDM (plus a lot more lighter bullets). My actual drops showed exactly what I'm claiming. The only issue I found, was that I could never safely reach 2900 fps consistently with the win mag. I could reach or exceed 2900 fps with the 7 rem mag with every bullet I tested. I'm giving the benefit of the doubt to the 300 win mag though, because I've read where others have reached 2900-3000 fps with their win mags and the heavies. Berger Lists the 230gr Hybrid as their highest bc bullet for the .308 family, of .717 Berger lists the 195gr EOL as their highest bc bullet for the .284 family, of .755 Hornady lists the 225 ELDM as their highest bc bullet for the .308 family, of .777 Hornady lists the 180 ELDM as their highest bc bullet for the .284 family, of .796 Nosler lists the 210 RDF as their highest bc bullet for the .308 family, of .701 Nosler lists the 180 RDF as their highest bc bullet for the .284 family, of .719 Run these through a ballistic program and see for yourself. Run both the 7 rem mag and the 300 win mag at 2900 fps @ the muzzle. Both are capable of these speeds, more or less. But both are realistic numbers. The 7mm will win in MOST cases. The only bullet that I can find that will beat the 7mm, is the 230 gr SMK with a bc of .800. I did make a mistake of saying that the 7mm would carry more energy in my first post on this subject. That is false. The 300 win mag will carry more energy. 7mm Mag or 300 WM ?

Yes, the 230 smk in a win mag will exceed the 7 mag.
  23. PowellSixO

    7mm Mag or 300 WM ?

Yep, but beyond that what happens? And you're comparing a 162 to a 200 grain bullet. Get those bullet weights closer together and see what happens. For example. Run a 195 berger eol vs a 210 vld (heaviest hunting bullet sold by berger for each bullet diameter), and see what happens. The 7mm really starts to shine.
  24. PowellSixO

    7mm Mag or 300 WM ?

Yes. Edit: I might be a little off on where the 7 mag exceeds the win mag, but in most of my testing the 7 mag bested the win mag at 600 yards.
  25. PowellSixO

    7mm Mag or 300 WM ?

They are very similar cartridges ballistically. Depending on what you want to do with the rifle, they have their ups and downs. In my personal experience, the 7 mag is superior to the 300 win mag in almost every way. The 7 mag holds less powder, and has less recoil. The 7 mag shoots bullets with higher bc's than the 300 win mag, which equates to less drop and wind drift. From 0-500 or 600 yards the 300 win mag will have a slight edge in fps and energy over the 7 mag. However, beyond that the 7 mag exceeds the 300 win mag in both fps and energy. So if you want a sub 500-600 yard rifle the 300 win mag may be better suited for you, if you don't mind the recoil. But if you want to shoot further than 500-600 yards, the 7 mag is the way to go.
