Look at how few mature Muleys are killed in southern AZ compared to mature coues. They must not be very easy to find

They are both hard to find for me lol .. I will keep at it and hopefully one day get it figured out.

They might be there and they might not be there. only one way to find out

Yea I have been trying to relocate these bucks for the last 2 evenings.. where I saw them it was very thick mesquite trees so I have not been able to find them. I am pretty sure I know where they get water so yesterday I glassed the surrounding area but still did not find them.. I will keep looking they are the best looking bucks I have personally seen in this particular spot and it's easy for me to get to so its easier to spend time looking for them .

  3. How big is a Southern Arizona mule deer home range ? (excluding the rut) Is it fairly small like a coues deer? If i find some good mule deer bucks should i be able to find them in the same general area if nothing changes food .. water .. pressure.. Thanks in advance

  4. nicks boots . its like the swaro of boots . way more expensive but hand made to your foot . i am a lineman so i hike at work a lot and my nicks are by far my favorite boots. what i would do is google wild land fire boots like nicks .. whites. scarpa . those are the boots we wear also if those fire fighters wear them they must be good .

We are on the other side of Mtns and a little south of there.  Good news/bad news.  Bad news is one hunter in camp backed out and he was the one that had the pop-up camper, so unexpectedly sleeping in tent for the week.  Good news is that means my Step-dad can now haul down a trailer with his SxS on it so we ( I ) can run up top into the steeper and more secluded areas that are less pressured.  Road up is too narrow to take a fullsize truck, we did it ONCE 3 years ago and swore never again in a FS vehicle.  I am not in the shape I need to be really, but one foot in front of the other I am gonna get to a good glassing spot.

Let us know how it goes

I have hunted both units for the last 38 years!  Both have their areas of non-deer and areas covered with deer!1321330441601.jpg.ab1a875682cd63732c2b3a0db9596d51.jpgsecuredownload.thumb.jpeg.b2aaa54c699ec2a763e20cdff454a86e.jpeg20151129_074206-1.thumb.jpg.4898641bc4a2f7d6c7ea3c279bbc2c5d.jpg1468502_1415887635315883_1335689697_n.jpg.68f7a4016d9074492f00dd05ad56715a.jpg10427213_1496084997296146_4303453109297880646_n.thumb.jpg.d87f7d8a3c5b1fb199f80a497d8385ba.jpg10632663_1490198151218164_8087122930841132216_n.jpg.2bda34576a1bb8745055f2b439e9ba97.jpg1463402_1404730343098279_2031408272_n.jpg.087efcfe8252a7d4c7fcff4b12d66fd9.jpg14517421_1764689593769017_8813006689441060908_n.thumb.jpg.03445e014c4f62df14eb8efb5228284a.jpg

Great pics . I agree with you.. there are spots with more deer.. in your opinion is the units getting better or worse .. I know there are more roads in both now then there was a few years ago . I also know more people go to them tto ride, shoot etc.. and in the near future there will be even more because they sold 200 acres on I 10 and 83 and they are building houses .. so I'm not sure how bad it will get but we will see..

    Hey jacob, thank you.

Im actually just getting a really early start on this, as coming down to Arizona this year (or early 2019) is out for me. I had all my wyoming tags (still looking for an elk) as well as Montana elk and deer tags. I then head to Nebraska in December for white tail. So I'm already trying to get my 2019 hunting season planned out. I love adventure hunts and doing new stuff!

no problem.. wow sounds like you have a lot more fun than me lol maybe one day when the kids are a bit older i can hunt around like that thats awesome. if you decide to put in for 34a 34b let me know i am no expert hunter but get to spend a lot of time in the units because they are my back yard. one thing that is happening is Vail AZ is growing like crazy so its putting more people in those units if not hunting just playing in the desert/hills.. i dont know how it will affect the hunting yet but just something to think about.

  8. I would say if you want the most action come hunt in Jan with an otc archary tag.. then you can hunt multiple units and then you can decide what unit you like and you can start putting in for rifle hunt in that unit.. also if you would have posted this question 10 or so days ago you could have put in for javalina and hunted them the same time you hunt deer.. also archery.. in az the rut happens in Jan so that's when you will see the most bucks.. as far as unit like everyone said any unit. I like the 34s because they are by my house .. good luck

How much experience do your wife have with shooting a rifle/shotgun?   If the answer is very little I would get her a cartridge that is in a short action.   I think most hunters use way more caliber than they need.   I would error on the light side.   Think in terms of .243, .308, 7mm08, ect.    If she is comfortable with bigger guns I would consider bigger rounds like the .270 or maybe a 30-06.    No need to go any bigger.   I wouldn't worry about weight that much.   Lighter guns recoil more.......plus, you should be carrying her gun anyways.   Heavy guns will also be more accurate.   When the nerves are going a lighter gun moves around more than a heavier gun.   Don't be afraid of weight.

I'm not a fan of muzzle breaks.   They require hearing protection and that doesn't always happen in the field.   By all means shoot a smaller round and don't use a break.   We have shot many, many, many elk with a .243 and I've yet to have one come back to life.   Heck my wife just shot an elk with a 42# bow and that elk tastes great.

The guns/bows my wife shoot are fit to her.   I think it is very important to have the gun fit to the shooter.     She has a .308 and a few 20 gauge shotguns that are her LOP.   The comfort and absorption of recoil will be dramatically different if the gun fits her.

    Practice, practice, practice.

I don't know your wife's experience level but I'm guessing she is a novice (which is super cool).    Your biggest issue isn't the gun/weapon.   Girls don't typically grow up like boys.   We had a BB gun in our hands starting at a very young age.   We got used to shooting birds, cans, frogs, rocks, windows and everything else.    That taught us how to shoot using a variety of different rests or freehand.   Your wife probably doesn't understand how to use a tree, hood, pack, kneeling, sticks as a rest.   I've spent tons of time setting up cans and having my wife shoot all sorts of stuff getting used to just acquiring the target and hitting it.    Actually being able to shoot the gun in hunting situations is by far and away the biggest issue I've seen when getting a woman ready to hunt....... Another huge consideration........keeping her warm.   If they are cold you are going home or wish you were going home.

I've had a great time hunting with my wife......she has killed buffalo, axis deer, many WT deer, pig, cow elk, bull elk.  but it does come with a grip of challenges.

thanks for the advice . i really like the keeping her warm part. yes i am trying to get her set up as comfortably as possible so she will want to spend maximum time in the field

For the guys who don't like looking through spotters why are you? I hook my phone or camera to it and watch the screen comfortably with my hands in my pockets, and I get video I can save for later. That alone makes the spotter #1 for me.

I use my binos on the tripod then when I see something I swap to spotter video mode

    great point
