Great pictures. Now that is how you are supposed to glass. I can't imagine what it must have been like to clean that thing in the snow and haul it out. Burrrrr.
-
Too bad there were no elk but these are some great pictures. I was out on an elk hunt also and the roads were awful.

I just talked to Chef about 30 min. ago and he was having to go up through Kanab and around through Page to come back to Flagstaff because of the snow at Jacob Lake. So at least they got dumped on.

Great buck. I was up there in 23 helping a friend for the weekend. Saw a couple bucks, one real wall hanger and one spike. Just no real shot opportunities.

I think that I have been lucky enough to have learned from someone that knows coues deer pretty well. I was able to take Duwane Adams glassing class a few months ago and I learned quit a bit. We started out glassing the south facing slopes and watched a ton of deer for a couple hours that morning. And as it started to warm up we were able to watch them move across to the north facing slopes. And don't waist your time glassing the north facing slopes in the sunlight. They will almost always be in the shadows. If you ever have the opportunity to take his class I would jump all over it. It was well worth the time and money spent.

Anyone see any hard horn bucks yet???
AZbowhntr replied to Webber's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I saw two muleys this morning when I went out quail hunting and they both still had the velvet on. I didn't realize that they kept it this late. I guess it is normal for this far south. -
Amanda, it sounded like you had a great hunt even though you didn't take anything. Talking with Hector I really wanted to get up there for a couple days but it just didn't work out. It sounds like you learned a lot from the trip though. Next time.

It sounds like everyone is going to have to start setting up camera's pointing at the camera on the tank. They will still get stolen but at least there will be a picture of whoever did it.

Amanda, I will buy a white long sleeve and a prairie long sleeve in XL. Thanks, Orlin

I also had a great time. It was great meeting some of the group even though I don't post that much here. I had to leave a little early and I hear later that everyone at the table started winning guns left and right. Guess I must of been the bad luck. But at least I got my tripod and head. Alan, it would have been nice to see you there.

AZ Deer Association Banquet May 10
AZbowhntr replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Amanda, count me in. Chef called the other day and reminded me and then sent me an email today. So I better get it done. How do I go about paying by Paypal? Thanks -
I was in unit B this last year and saw a couple herds of at least 20. I have been in both and seen javelina in both. I don't think it will matter.

I will tag along with the chef. Look forward to meeting some other members. Orlin Egbert Mt. Dew is good for me. -
Help with Limited Opportunity archery elk
AZbowhntr replied to Coues24A's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I would also talk with the G&F warden for those units. They are usually pretty good about giving info. Especially for those limited opportunity hunts. -
Here is another picture of one of the bucks that Duwanes camp took. This buck has incredible mass. I took this picture while Gary was caping it out a little later in the morning. I did Duwane's map service and would do it again. It was worth every penny that I spent. Here is also a picture of the buck that I ended up taking. I had the early west side tag. I took this buck after passing several earlier in the hunt that was bigger. I just started running out of time.

I have a question. What are the dates of the first rifle season for coues in 23? I drew the tag but can't remember what the dates are. And the website is still only giving the draw info. Looks like there are several of the guys from here that will be hunting the same hunt. Good luck.

There is an article in the paper today talking about all the grasshoppers. It said because of the mild winter we had they did real well. I saw a ton of them while I was on my turkey hunt.
-
You have an awesome tag there. I have spent a lot of time in 23. That was also my first choice this year. Send me a PM and I will give you some areas that the elk are thick in during the rut. I have had up to five bulls bugling around me a couple times. Unfortunately I have never had a rut tag for there. So I just get to watch them.

Favorite Trophy Photos
AZbowhntr replied to COOSEFAN's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Here are a few animals that I have taken the last couple years. Here is my buck from last year. A javelina from a couple years ago. And a turkey from a few years ago. And last but not least is a buddies bear from the San Carlos that I was lucky enough to tag along and help with. -
Lazzeroni did come out with the Patriot (.308) made from the Savage Weather Warrior rifle. That is the rifle that I shoot. I am not sure if they are still making it though. I reload my own ammo from a load I got from Kirk Kelso from Pusch Ridge Outfitters and it will shoot with any gun out there. Not saying that I can but the rifle can.

C/W member says his card got hit
AZbowhntr replied to Huntn coues's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Congrats to everyone that has drawn a tag so far. It is a lot like over on MM was last year. It seemed like everyone there drew tags. I know I had 2. You can't get your hopes up too much when you only put in for early rifle elk tags. -
Yeah, your lucky she didn't leave you a big steaming present on you sleeping bag. You would have had to throw that thing away. It reminds me of my turkey hunt a few years ago. I woke up in the back of my truck to a turkey gobbling up on the hillside. So I got up and went up and shot it. I was done by 6:30 opening morning.

They did my muzzle brake on my rifle this last year. I am very happy with the job they did. They actually beat the date that they told me they would have it done by a week.
-
There were some real nice ones taken this year out of A. I went up with a buddy of mine that had a tag and we saw several bucks just nothing that would go over 80". I have pictures of a buck that went 113 that was taken in the same place we were glassing a week before. We just didn't wait for the storm to pass. Because that brought all the bucks out. Good luck.

I saw a bunch of them while elk hunting in a canyon that looks alot like the one you where in. I was in unit 23 in AZ. It took us a long time to figure out what they were. My buddy even got down and tried to smell them but couldn't smell anything. Didn't see any elk but we did see some coues.
