I gave both of my boy's High Country bows when they were about 8, I chose the high country because the weight went from 25-40 and draw was adjustable from 23-28. these were real bow's which they both were able to hunt with when they were old enough. I think it's important to start them off with quality equipment to help keep them from getting discouraged. these bow's were pretty easy to tune and they were fast! they start shooting with tabs, easier to learn with plus no big deal when lost.
For my daughter I bought her a nice pse recurve which shot very nice and was easy to draw.
