    CouesDeer Salt Lick

I have hunted over salt and find that the same deer will come around every 2-3 days. If the salt is new you are probably wasting your time. It takes a while for the deer to find the salt and it is very important to keep adding salt 3-4 times a year. Arizona Griz.

    GOT A TAG? USE IT!!!

I don't know any of those people. We religiously check as soon as we can to see if we got drawn and if we get drawn count the days till the season starts. Arizona Griz.

Thanks for the info, this would be a prime case where a GPS would be useful. Arizona Griz.

    Hot Weather Patterns

Our boys hunt was the same way. The heat kept the deer, what little there were, from moving much past 9 o'clock. The wind didn't play much of a factor until after Saturday afternoon. Arizona Griz.

    October Hunt

My friend and I took our sons (their hunt) down south and hunted between the Patagonias and Canelo Hills. It was pretty dissapointing. We saw very few deer. The grass was very tall and very dead. Even though it was very good looking country the deer just weren't to be found. On another note some other friends hunted Unit 29 and shot 100 inch plus deer, and my boss shot a respectable buck in 36A. I hope my hunt in November will be as good. Arizona Griz.

    Age questions about Coues bucks

I am not experienced in aging Coues deer but I will give my personal opinion on your questions. First I think a mature deer would be at least 3 1/2 years old, possibly 4 1/2. Second, the size of the rack would be determined on the animals diet and genetic history not necessarily on age, and because of some of the studies that I have read with regard to age of deer hunters have shot (very few deer are older than 5 1/2 years), I don't think that they live in the wild longer that 6 to 7 years. Coues distance

My maximum effective range is around 40 yards. The range obviously depends on the shooter. I have friends that can drive tacks at 60 yards. Arizona Griz.

Mule deer hunters CAN take the joke , and I think you should print them. I would buy a couple. Arizona Griz.

    New Coues Book

Is the hard back version of the Coues book out now and does anyone know where it can be purchased? Arizona Griz.

    36a

I hunted the Colorados last year and I will be there again this November. There is access from all directions and like Bret said you need to get up high before first light and have the hunters drive the deer up to you, unless the deer head into the flats. Arizona Griz.

    Unit 36C

After you scout the areas around the ranches (generally in the center of the unit) don't forget to check the mountains on the south end about 5 miles north of the border. Arizona Griz.

Sooo, How did it go on opening weeked?

I didn't get a shot or even see a buck, but I did see a few does, some elk and even a bear came by under my stand. I will be after it again this coming weekend. Arizona Griz.

    Newly Retired Forester/Bowhunter

You might want to check the Arizona Game and Fish website. Try looking up some of the southern units. Some of the information should help you. Arizona Griz.

    Deer Cams

The camera I used was a Buckshot 35. I am going to set it up on another spot about 4 miles from my last spot this weekend. Arizona Griz.

    Deer Cams

I finally tried a trail camera and it worked great. I put it up last Saturday in Unit 23 and picked up the camera yesterday. I had 4 different Coues bucks (2-2X3 and 2-2X2) and two Coues does come by including one spike elk. All of the deer came by between 9:00 A.M and 12 noon. It looks like the 2-2X3 could grow into 3X3. Hopefully I won't get to greedy and will hold out for a larger buck, we will find out opening day of archery season. Arizona Griz.

    Unit 22

All of the areas that you have mentioned have Coues deer. You might want to look into the south side of Fossil Creek where it begins. Sorry, I really don't have any additional information for you. I prefer the southern end of the unit myself. Arizona Griz.

    Doe with antlers

Every now and then it is reported that a doe is taken and has antlers. I have seen a few pictures of deer back east this way but it seems that they never have very big antlers. Arizona Griz.

    Az draw results

I personally have never hunted 32 for Coues deer. but I have heard people talk about the northeast end of the mountains coming in from Aravapai Canyon. Arizona Griz.

    Az draw results

Bret, sorry you struck out. I at least got a Coues tag where I wanted it in 36A for November, missed out on my archery antelope and elk though. Arizona Griz.

    New Arrows

Most of my friends shoot carbons now but I have stayed with Easton aluminum. I shoot X-7's which is the hardest aluminum used today and shoot ultra lights. I shoot a much heavier bow but have found the 2312's, 2412's and 2413's work very well for me. Both of my cam bows shoot in the 300 to 320 ft./sec. range so I have found it not really beneficial to change to the carbons. It is really owner preference to either shoot carbons or aluminums. Getting excited!

I have yet to shoot a Coues deer or even a Mule deer for that fact with a bow. I also enjoy hunting Coues deer in the fall with a rifle. I can tell you that a 80in. Coues deer or even a 140in. Mule deer shot with a bow is definitely a trophy. Arizona Griz.

    NEW WORLD RECORD P&Y COUES....

It is real. I got to see it a couple of years ago at our Bowhunting in Arizona Banquet in Tucson. Arizona Griz.
  25. I prefer a .270 and that's what I have been using for 30 years. But lately I have been thinking about a Remington 7MM Ultra Mag. Arizona Griz.
