Video Of AZ Raffle Desert Sheep Hunt with Claude Warren and Colburn and Scott Outfitters
willhunt4coues replied to Jay Scott's topic in Jay Scott Outdoors/Colburn and Scott Outfitters
WOW congrats to you all. You guys worked hard for him. -
Applied Ballistics is the best if you have the extra cash get the book, DVD set, and the program for your phone. They do also make a Kestrel that has the built in AB program but don't know how well it works. Again anything related to AB and Bryan Litz will be the key to little tricks and treats to accomplishing long range.

NO I use the coyote vocals LOUD 1 time to get a response to find out where they are then move in and set the volume to 15 max and call them in. If I am calling bears I also play loud but most of the time it is only at 15.

I just bought my son Zack (7 years old) a Remington 700 SPS AAC-SD tactical. I have already put a custom trigger, HS precision stock, PEC customs brake, us optics 20 moa base, nightforce rings, topped with a Vortex 4-16x50 PST EBR1 MOA. I want to get a Valdada like I have on my .308 but need to save a little. As long as I dial the turrets he can hit out to 450 yards. Hopefully by the time he is 10 he will be able to hit out to 600. My next buy will be the Savage Long Range 6.5-284 with a Valdada.

Yeah the Krakatoa looks sweet just a little more than I wanna spend You will not be disappointed. I have set mine out to 150 yards and it still works at that distance.

I wish they all would. I don't mind doing the calculations and I still have to factor in spin drift anyways so I double check these reading on my Applied Ballistics app which in turn always comes back to the same reading as the rangefinder. If I had to make a quick shot I know I can with confidence. I really just wish the rangefinder manufactures would make all rangefinders with the incline decline feature which they do but do away with a degrees and give us straight up range. If Nikon and True Pulse can do it in their rangefinders everyone should be able too. Why make it harder and more difficult than it really is. How exactly do you factor in the wind... Do you input a wind speed and then and direction (value) or do your best guess on the amount of wind effecting the bullet. This is not a big issue, but does the unit take into account coriolis effect... With my 300 RUM this can effect the flight up to 1/2 MOA (7") at 1,400 yards with a east or west shot. With regards to the angle read out, the only way that they can do it accurately is if they give you the effective range run thru an accurate ballistic program such as the G7...Its not just the horizontal distance that effects where the bullet impacts, but also the time of flight or the overall resistance that the bullet receives during the flight. Thanks for the review. here maybe this will help

Thanks for the review. Lets say I meter the wind at 5 mph then you just select the up down arrow to the correct 5 mph setting and with your distance ALREADY given (500 yards 10 moa) you will get 1.2 moa for wind. Wind is inputed to select 5, 10, 15,ect in the rangefinder you have to decide which direction but yes if you have just ranged a deer at 900 yards it will take that into effect for the 5, 10, what ever wind speed you select and give you a calculated correction. Coriolis effect and spin drift does play a part on shots at 1400 but at distances like that yes no stone should be unturned use your calculator in conjunction with this range finder. The Rangefinder only works out to 1400 with the ballistics but when I shoot 1200 or beyond I only use the rangefinder to range not the program in it. If you were hunting deer are you going to take a shot 1400 yards? EVEN if you did practice all the time and felt confident great go for it but for me I will be using this range finder out to 1000 and will only have to factor in spin drift which I already have memorized at that distance. This rangefinder being that it only does ballistics out to 1400 doe snot mean to use that info out to 1400. But for me to be able to range a mountain at 1900 yards and another mountain in between at 1200 yards then I will know when I get to 1200 yard point b for the shot it should be roughly 700 yards. I have in the past not been able to range a hill I wanted to get to thinking that if I get to point b I should only be 300 yards and come to find out I need another 800 yards to go and did not prepare for the entire trip I may have to go back.

Well after my dad not wanting to put in for 24A Turkey and me wanting too. When the draw results came out, low and behold we both got the ONLY 2 tags for the later hunt (May 3 to May 23). Now my dad has been Turkey hunting before but its been well over 20 years with only a hen taken (never a gobble) and this being my first time we knew we were going to have fun. I took off May 6 through May 10 and hunted every day waking up at 3:20 every morning . We heard Gobblers EVERY day but it seemed as if every other day they would answer you more than once. We called one in on Tuesday May 7 at 66 yards and he stayed out at that distance for 45 minutes and left. We knew we were doing something right but knew that something was wrong. I called Amanda and asked if she had any info and was very helpful in letting us borrow a few hen decoys since we already had a Jake decoy. We thought that may have been the reason he never came closer, he could not find the hen. Thursday May 9 we heard one in his roost so we got all set up and started calling. While our attention was on the one gobbling we heard one gobble to our right and knew he was coming into us. I had my dad set up for the take and I was behind the call and camera videoing the whole thing. When he got to within 40 yards my dad shot and was able to harvest his first ever Gobbler and to top it off he had a 10" beard. We could not believe it. Of course when he shot all I could tape was him shooting because the bird was behind a tree in my view, go figure. We continued to hunt every day we could and I had one chance when we drove up onto 2 of them at 50 yards last Sunday but of course I could not seal the deal. Every time I have been drawn for a big game critter I have harvested so for this being my first time not harvesting what I was drawn for I was a little disappointed but then look back at how much fun my dad and I had (some days my boy went of course that's when we would see Turkeys) and his harvest I believe it was as successful as you can get on a hunt. Thanks again dad and my son for the memories of a lifetime. Amada all I can say is thank you so much for all your info you were willing to share. You helped make this one fun and successful hunt.

I just bought a Rem 700 SPS AAC and the xmark triggers SUCK!!!! People say you can not adjust down any poundage and they are right the I could screw the adjustment anyway I want and it does not move from 4 lbs which is way to much for me. I took mine off my 6.8 that has the old trigger and got it down to 2.13 lbs. I could go lower but it feels too good to go any lower. My advise is to change triggers first thing then get rid of the Houge stock if it comes with it and get an HS precision.

I would love to shoot my caller AZP&Y I mean fox pro....LOL. Sounds like you at least had fun!!!

Long Range Shooting
willhunt4coues replied to Jay Scott's topic in Jay Scott Outdoors/Colburn and Scott Outfitters
Ya long range is a hoot. I have now been into long range for over a year and knowing that you can hit targets at 700,800,900, and 1000 is great. Don't know if I would shoot a Coues that far (a lot can go wrong) but feel confident if I had to I could. -
Whats up Clay. I have some other projects I want to do. If it dont sell it definitenly wont hurt my feelers.Just throughing it out there to see if anyone is interested. I think you will miss it more when she is gone..
-
What Kyle why are you selling it? I have seen this Jeep in action and it would be a great buy. Good luck bud.
-
That is exactly how I want to harvest my first Lion. I know dogs work their butts off and have no disrespect for them I would just rather glass one up. I did see similar activity this weekend while scouting I seen 4 bucks take off running like something really scared them. We glassed for another hour with nothing to see but the bucks. CONGRATS !!!!

Any time bro. Call me next time you are up. Congrats again.

willhunt4coues replied to MULEPACKHUNTER's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Okay now here is the question I have how heavy in the mcree stock? I see you have the hand grab (costs extra) but this is about the same stock I want and was really wanting to know how heavy the gun is overall? Thanks, OH YA SAWWEETTT setup. -
Congrats again to you Sara and Beau for making her dreams come true. Like I said last night you now have a hunting partner for life...

Berger bullets for hunting
willhunt4coues replied to hunter1026's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I have just bought a Remington 700 .308 SPS AAC-SD Tactical and have been using Bergers in my Howa M1500 .308. The 700 did not like them at first. I shot a 5 inch group at 100 yards and this being a bull barrel knew I could get better results so I seated them to 2.820 and took my group to 1/2 moa (recommended COAL is 2.810 but I had mine at 2.800 that's what my howa likes). So if you do decide to get them get you a COAL gauge and email berger for the specs on your bullets. They will send you all the info for what powders to use and a guide for COAL. I will tell you at 200 and 300 yards your grouping even gets better than 100. I have shot many steel targets and when a berger hits them they almost swing upside down. You will not be disappointed. -
What rifle scope do you use?
willhunt4coues replied to rhineheimer's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I have a Valdada 6-24x56 with mp8 crosshairs also have Vortex PST 4-16x50 moa crosshairs. Both scopes are good but the Valdada is CRYSTAL clear with a dot for the center which make precision shots even easier. I have looked through nightforce and like them too they are just not a clear as the Valdada. Look at the Vortex HS models if you are wanting to save money plus have a precision longrange scope. Only downside to Valdada is the price is up there with nightforce being a little more than Valdada. Good luck on your quest. -
My Daughter Awesome Hunt!
willhunt4coues replied to Ernesto C's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
TOO COOL Ernesto. Awesome job of keeping your eyes open even after she shot to see your buck. Congrats to the both of you on a memory worth a thousand lifetimes!!! -
I have to thank my dad for always taking me out since I was very very young. Like others have said back then we would not scout just go looking around. No glassing from tripods, no dialing turrets (just hold over shots). Since I had started getting into Coues hunting hard core everything else followed Elk, Predator, Turkey have now all become an addiction. I can not go a week without going out to harvest or look for some critter and who is still with me on 95% of my trips my dad and now I have been taking my son out for 4 years now. My son is 7 now and really getting into hunting so I am wanting to teach him what I can in the time I can.

Get something you can practice with all day without having to spend thousands on. I have now 2 .308 and they are my go to rifle for Coues. I can shoot them all day long (practicing) and it is easier to find what you need for reloading/ammo. I shot my buck last year at 550 and I know for a fact I could take one at 800. I have had 30-06, 7mm, and will pick a .308 over any of them any day. My next build (next year) will be a 6.5x284 for Coues. Good luck on your quest!!!
