It occured to me that I need to plant a seed here. I was looking at Swaro spotting scopes on line, for $1240, you can get STM-65 scope body. You pickup my 20-60x eyepiece for $425 and your into a Swaro spotter for $1665. I don't go hunting without my Swaro Spotter. Lots of people think in terms of judging trophy deer, but mine is actually used in reverse alot of times. I hunt with alot of people new to the sport and are just looking to take their first buck. We are able to put antlers on deer that would otherwise be Does and it gives us the opportunity to go after these deer. I can tell you there is alot of joy when first timers wrap a tag around a critter, reguardless of antler size. By thinking outside the box my friend picked up a very nice 270 WSM here, the gun was $1,500 which he didn't have, he had $800, the owner wanted a Lecia Rangerfinder and the balance in cash. My friend put the Lecia on his credit card and bought an awesome gun set up with a great scope. He paid off his balance. So here are some links, the seasons are just around the corner, the first hunt I am helping on this year is just over 8 weeks away, it will be here before you think, Take Care, JLG. http://www.opticspla...scope-body.html http://www.bearbasin...tting-scope.htm

JLG replied to reganranch's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer

Hunting boots: what's good and what isn't?
JLG replied to CouesSlayer77's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
My last two sets of boots have been Danner Pronghorns. I am about do for another set. I got two years out of the last one, but also had about 125 days on them too. They are comfortable and easy on your feet. I would buy them again. I may get this set rebuilt as a spare pair. Danner offers this service for about $100, Take Care, JLG. -
I have 12 and have had two rifle tags in Az, one in 1985 and another in 2001. I think I am on pace to pick another one up in 7 years. Probably be the last one too. I have really enjoyed the antelope hunts I have done and the ones I have helped on, Take Care, JLG.

Do you have access to a travel trailer or toyhauler? There is a small private RV park that borders north and south, that could be a good fit for you. I bought a toyhauler in 2010 for an elk hunt I had in early Dec in 22. I still have it up there, I keep it at the Lamplighter which is in Star Valley, we have run a host of elk, deer, javelina, bear hunts and fishing trips out of it the last two years. Its pretty much turnkey, I just show up and turn on the water. I keep a Polaris Ranger up there and a small 14' fishing boat for trout. We have 10 tags in 22 for elk this year, one tag is over the same timeframe you have. I actually have a friend with an early bull MZ tag in 22S in september, I am excited about that hunt, it looks to be rougher than snot too, Take Care, JLG.

Tracy, great story overall, but as a step-father who truly hates my kids dad, for not being there to supporting his kids when they where young, I find it cool that you can co-raise Jackson with his father and make it work. When my daughters reconcilied with their father, to my dismay, I asked them why and one of them said it gives us one more person to love. It was hard to argue with that and that statement has never been lost on me. Congrats, to you, Jackson and Zach and a great shared experiance, Take Care, JLG.

I had the same hunt. I helped on the early late rifle hunt and we took a spike and a 4 x 4. On our hunt we have taken 2- 5 x 5's and 2- 6 x 6's. I am going out this morning for the last day with a couple of folks. Hopefully, we can cap it off with another bull or two. I have a trailer in Star Valley and I scouted alot during the summer. I looked for remote locations I could glass from. All the bulls have come that way. The packouts have been murder, but we have filled 6 of 7 tags so far, Take Care, JLG.

I think most of my mistakes are lack of preparation. This one falls under a couple categories, you never know what your going to see and when and if there is a season for it, have a tag in your wallet. A couple years ago in 36C, I was helping a couple of friends on a WT hunt. They didn't take Friday off, so we headed down friday afternoon. We parked their 32 foot toyhauler, I got out and started glassing a not too far off mountain. I see movement think its a deer and go get my spotting scope. Mind you we are set up right behind the toyhauler. My buddy looks at what I am looking at and it turns out to be a bedded lion. From the toyhauler he was 500 yards away, probably could have closed the distance to 300 easy. None of us had a tag, no one camped around us had a tag. We watched that lion for 45 minutes, until it was too dark to see anymore. I have shot and shaved hair off the back of a lion before, but this one haunts me more. Between, the miss and this one, it was the deciding factor in getting a custom rifle with turrets built. You only get a few such chances in you life and I feel, like I have used several to this point. Next lion I see, I want for a rug on my wall, not a woulda, shoulda, coulda story, Take Care, JLG.

Just wanted to pass on a quick story, some may know and some not, that Dale offers half-price mounts for first time successful Juniors hunters. I was hunting with a friend of mine and his sixteen year old son this weekend in 23. The boy took a nice 3 x 3 coues. I told my friend Dale has this offer for first time successful juniors. He took the deer to Dale's shop and without my friend saying a word, Dale brought up the 1/2 price discount. That struck me as an honorable man. Daniel would have had great memories of the hunt anyway, but Dale's effort to keep the hunting tradition alive for the next generation, at a very afforded price, made the weekend that much more special. Just wanted to share, Take Care, JLG.

Anybody here ever used the Gunclaw???
JLG replied to Stallone A.'s topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I have the claw and love it. Made a 370 yard shot on a Mule Deer buck last year. Your best bet if you buy one is to also get the head and plates that Cade also sells. It's a great head and I use it when I am glassing too. I also bought extra plates, so my Binos, Spotting scope and the Claw, all have there own plates, so you don't have to take them off and switch them, Take Care, JLG. -
I am having a rifle built and one of the things, I am having done, is to have the stock drilled and tapped to hold a quick release plate for my Fluid Head Mount. I bought the Claw and I love it, but it got me thinking, why not mount the quick release plate directly to your stock. I bought the head and plates Cade sells, for the Claw, great head and heavy-duty plates. Hopefully, it works out well as a finished product. If not I just have a couple extra holes in my stock and I can go back to using the Claw, Take Care, JLG.

For a safe area to camp, I would camp just outside of the Elkhorn Ranch, it usually has several hunting camps close by. In terms of 36C, if you can glass you will find deer. Get some maps and go with whatever strikes your fancy. If you have experiance go with your instincts. One area of advice I can recommend is to hunt in any of the foot access only areas and get back in a mile or two, you won't have it to yourself, but you won't be tripping over people either, Good Luck, JLG.
