    HUNTER'S FIRST JAVI HUNT

We drove by you guys on Saturday, parked to the right of a cattleguard if I remember right, my friend said something about the coueswhitetail sticker. We hunted on the other side of the freeway for the most part. I could actually glass your trailer from where we were. Congrats to you and your son, JLG.

Does anybody live up by Cordes Junction, is there snow on the ground around Dugas? Do you think with the big storm coming in Thursday night/Friday, there could be snow there? Take Care, JLG.

    All of you using 15's-Question

I have both and use one carbon fiber tripod. I also have the Claw and the panhead and extra plates, that Cade sells with the Claw, I really love that panhead. If you can have only one I would go with the 15's, but if you can have both, I would get both and use both, I don't hunt without either one now. I did a sheep hunt in Dec. and the distances we were glassing were so far out that I probably used my spotter about 50 to 60% of the hunt. I would say, in other situations I have it out about 20% of the time, I would feel naked without it now, Take Care, JLG.

I just read your story today as well in the Western Hunter. You did a great job of writing it up and had great pictures too. I am leaving in the morning for my Desert Bighorn Sheep hunt, its in 41E, once again great job on a really tough hunt, Take Care, JLG.

    New fire in 36C

Anybody good enough with a mapping program, that they can show the location of the burn? Would Google earth show something like that? Going down this Thursday to help some friends on a hunt and it sure sounds like the burn happened in the area we have been hunting, Take Care, JLG.

    Held at gunpoint

Last year I was down in 36C with a friend and I glassed up a B & C buck at about 800 yards. I sent my friend after him figuring it was a slam dunk. He needed to make 650, peak over a small ridge and put a bullet into him at 150 yards. My friend made 400, when the second of the two bucks looked up, took off on a sprint and took the big buck with him. I was wondering what happened when about 15 illegals came out of the same small drainage, the deer had been feeding in. The Border Patrol was active the whole time we were down there. Helos, trucks, guys on foot, glassing agents on mountain tops. spotlighted by helos afterdark, walking out by flashlight. I was carrying my 9MM, but I felt undergunned for sure. Great hunting, but always with a sense of danger. I just did a juniors hunt in 23 a couple weekends ago and it was nice not to worry about illegals, Take Care, JLG.

    Engaged!

Tyler, just got home from Miguel's wedding tonight. I was with him and his lady the weekend he proposed. It was a Kiabab Turkey hunt. He took her to Marble View Point at sunset and she said yes. He told me 4 years earlier, the first time I showed it to him on a Turkey hunt that if he ever got engaged he would pop the question there. True to his word he did. Wish you and your lady much happiness and many young Elkhunters and Elkhuntresses, Take Care, JLG.

    You a Golfer?

I knew Ryan personally, He worked at Copperstate Nut and Bolt and we would talk hunting when I would go in and buy hardware. I got to know his father after something I wrote in another hunting board about Ryan, after his funeral. His dad and friends invited me to go out with them on a 36C Dec. WT hunt last year. A great group of guys. The couple days I was there, I glassed up about a 85 inch WT, that Ryan's Uncle took with Ryan's gun. These folks are great people, helping a great cause. Ryan was a great guy, so if you like golf and want to do something good, this is it, Take Care, JLG.

    how many is too many?

In the last 4 years I have had 23 tags, all but one in Az. I also help my friends every chance I get. In 2007 I was out 72 days, in 2008 88, and so far this year 38. My wife likes going to Vegas, so next week we are going for the 4th time since last August. She is also her own BFF, she likes to be home and home alone to boot. We have been married 22 years and I usually average about 60 days a year doing something, she always sez I work hard and its what I love to do and she doens't have a problem with it. I am pretty blessed, Take Care JLG.

    Reloader Info

I have a 650 Dillion and I will second the part about Dillion being in town, I have had my loader about 17 years and have broke stuff and they replace it free. It is nice to be able to run over and get parts when you need them. Another note on Dillion is they have a no BS warranty, so say you find a smoking deal on a Dillion on Craigs List or Backpage, you can take that Dillion in and they will go through the whole machine and fix it free of charge. The warranty is really nice when you break something because you were a dummy. Its alot less painful to get the replacement part when its free. I would get the Dillion. If you want more advice you can go to www.arizonashooting.com, there was a thread a while back about the same thing you are asking about, Take Care, JLG.
  21. I have a few stories. I was helping a friend on a unit 22 WT hunt last year and as luck would have it, we were above the the Hot Springs on the Verde River. I got alot of use out of my 80HD. My friend after a while asked me when I was going to start looking for deer. My way of thinking, I already was. Another story from last year. I was helping out a friend of mine in one the 36's about 8 miles from the border. We had been sitting on about a 70" WT for about 3 or 4 hours. This buck was a couch potatoe, he got up maybe 3 minutes in that time. It would have been my friends first WT and his second deer. So as time goes by I get tired of watching this buck and start looking around. At about 800 yards I glass up a 85-90 buck and probably 105 to 110 monster. I get my buddy over, the stalk looks like a slamdunk, cover 650 yards out of their view, peek over a small ridge at 150 and toast the toad. My friend makes it half-way over and all of a sudden the smaller buck goes from feeding to full-on alert. Turns on a dime and takes the monster with him. I am sitting there feeling really sorry for my friend and wondering what just happened. I didn't have to wonder long, I see 15 UDI's coming down a small trail that let straight to the bucks. It was a great disappointment. I also have a watched a poacher, go talk with him, find out where his camp was and get his license plate, call G & F and get paid story too, this was 25 years ago easy. I guess it also turned into a drug bust story once the investigation got started. I was glassing a couple of years ago and glassed up 25 UDI's working a wash, they were going the opposite direction I was and I felt pretty good about it until, I followed the wash out and realize it would put them about 50 yards from my camp. That gave me a case of the oh -----. Fortunately, they got out of the wash about a mile from camp, but I was worried for a bit, Take Care, JLG.

    Juniors-only hunts

I don't have children of my own in the Jr. range, but I have friends that do and friends that will and Grandchildren that will. I helped on a Jr. Javelina hunt last year, it was a friend of mine and his 13 and 16 year old sons. They both shot a pig. It was the first big game animal for the 13 year old. I came away from the weekend feeling like I was a big part of a milestone for the 13 year old. I am 47 now and shot my first Big Game animal at 15. I still remember and treasure that weekend and the neighbor who took me under his wing. I feel like maybe the 13 year old will have the same memories 30 years from now. It is nice to give the kids the first shot of the season so to speak. I am helping out a 16 year old and his dad on a 23 Jr, deer hunt the 9th of Oct. in 23. The kid is excited and so am I. I am also helping out the same father/son combo and another father/son combo in 33 for pigs the weekend of Nov. 20th. I really enjoy the jr.s hunts, feels really good to give back, Take Care, JLG.
