  5. Principal photography began on June 9, 1959 with location filming taking place at Arizona locations. The set for the Chinese village was erected on the Horse Mesa Dam Road, 40 miles east of Phoenix; another set was erected in the vicinity of Superstition Mountain. The Fish Creek Hill Bridge on the Apache Trail was revamped to resemble the Chinese wooden bridge that is blown up in the action and the temple set, ammunition and supply station as well as the airfield were erected in Nogales. these days the road to horse mesa is locked up. in 1978 it was really fun to go down to the srp housing there....especially with a teenage gf.... http://en.wikipedia....e_Mountain_Road

    Who taught you to hunt?

Mom got me up and loaded me into grandpa's '49 GMC on a monday morning in 1965. She still had a deer tag in her pocket and nobody else to go hunting with that October morning in Skull Valley, Arizona. Dad had to go back to work on Vulcan guns at Luke Field and grandpa Markham had Santa Fe track to supervise from Congress to Iron Springs on the spur line. So she took me down to a siding south of the Skull Valley stationhouse and we walked the morning away-that woman wanted some venison for the winter! Bagged a bunch of muley sheds and mom got a shot at a fox with dad's 1953 Winchester model 70-open sighted of course! Grandma and grandpa's Santa Fe house is now the home thats been moved to the Skull Valley Railroad Museum. Yea I still carry that model 70. 1972 I was a snot nose kid selling waterdogs and ammunition at Jim's Bait on Apache Trail out east of Mesa. In walks a short cowboy feller name of Mike Pock. Thats when I started to learn about huntin' being more important than eatin' or sleepin'! Thank you sir! RIP. lee

    Remington 700 BDL Question

The BDL grade rifle has some very select wood and a real lover of fine firearms would not consider hacking it off. For your hunt and target practice buy an off-the-shelf ramline or uncle mikes plastic stock w/pad and leave the wood unaltered. Recoil pad? All of my rifles have steel recoil pads..... lee Insanity runs in the family-it practically gallups!

    Bobi and Frank Wheeler

Met Frank shortly after he moved to the mountain and worked with him alot over the years. Memorial is the 28th in Show Low. Two American Citizens were reported missing last weekend after they went kayaking south of San Felipe, in Baja California, and never came back. Yesterday, the body of one of them, 70 year old Frank Wheeler, was found floating in the water in Bahía de San Luis Gonzaga, in the Gulf of California area (Sea of Cortez). The other American Citizen is Frank’s wife, 60 year old Bobi Wheeler. She is still missing. The couple reside in the San Felipe community of El Dorado, and they’re known to be fond of kayaking. The search for this American couple was prompted by reports of their vehicle having been abandoned since April 7th at the tourist camp of Huerfanitos, 70 miles south of San Felipe. So far no wrongdoing is suspected, since they were both seen entering the gulf waters in their kayaks right after parking their vehicle. The Mexican navy on Wednesday continued its search in an area south of Puertecitos for Bobi Wheeler. A statement by Mexico’s Naval Ministry said that personnel had been searching on land and sea since Saturday, and on Sunday an airplane was sent to join the effort. The airplane and two boats continued to search the area between Punta Bufeo and Punta Final on Wednesday. According to the statement from the Mexican Naval Ministry, some fishermen on Monday found an empty kayak drifting about three miles from an area known as Campo Douglas. Frank Wheeler’s body was found later that day, according to the statement.

    Rocky Point

Some of the most incredible action i have seen down penasco way was with a zara spook-with no hooks. out on the rocks between pelican pt and sandy beach at first light. throw out as far as you can and reel/sweep it back as fast as you can-faster the better. sometimes a dozen fish chasing and jumping over and around it. mostly mexican pompano and small corvina but i caught a 12lb pargo on a pop-r with hooks at sandy beach once. lee

    Book Recommendations for Kids

perhaps try Jim Harrisons' "the boy who ran to woods". Patagonia's own 'one-eyed jim' is a favorite author/poet/liberal and have heard great reviews of this childrens tale. the late Jess Hayes of globe wrote some great stories-try "sheriff thompson's days". lots of frontier law and order-he was gila county schools superintendent. maybe Ross Santee's "the bar x golf course" an Arizona comedy that had me falling out of my chair. par? 1703! lee Insanity runs in the family-it practically gallups!

Robert Fisher may still be in Arizona, FBI warns by Ofelia Madrid - Apr. 19, 2012 06:18 PM The Republic | azcentral.com Eleven years after the grisly murders of Scottsdale's Fisher family, the FBI is alerting law enforcement in northern Arizona that Robert Fisher, the prime suspect, may still be living in the area. Days ago, a Coconino County Sheriff's deputy announced at a community meeting in Payson that the FBI had sent notice that Fisher, an avid hunter and angler, could be living in the area. Payson is in Gila County, but the deputy lives in the area, said Rex Gilliland, operations commander for the Coconino County Sheriff's Office. The Payson area is where the last sign of Fisher was found in April 2001, after Fisher's wife Mary, 38, and their children, Brittney, 13, and Bobby, 10, were found murdered. On April 10, 2001, Fisher slit the throats of his family, shot his wife in the head, blew up their south Scottsdale home to cover it up and disappeared, according to police. Ten days later, Mary's Toyota 4Runner was discovered in the mountains outside of Payson, along with the family dog, Blue. Inside the SUV, police found the an Oakland Raiders ball cap, which is what Fisher was wearing in his last confirmed sighting by bank surveillance cameras. Fisher was photographed withdrawing $280 from an ATM in Scottsdale the day of the explosion. The announcement that Fisher might still be in the area was intended for law enforcement, but residents are encouraged to keep their eyes open, said FBI spokesman Manuel Johnson. "We are attempting to re-canvass the area and focusing on Fisher's characteristics of him being an avid outdoorsman," Johnson said. Despite being more than a decade old, the unsolved murder continues to attract worldwide attention. Fisher remains on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted List. "The case agents get leads on a weekly basis," Johnson said. "We've had leads from all over the country, north and south of the border." The focus continues to be Fisher's personality; he is described as an introvert with controlling characteristics. By now, Fisher would be 51. He would walk with an upright posture and pushed-out chest because of a lower back surgery.
