navajo and apache county have little enforcement and the 'utes'(remember that movie with joe pesci?) just use their trucks. the winter range up here is crisscrossed with full size truck tire tracks starting the first week of march. really-the st peters dome and woolhouse mtn habitat areas(no ve-hicles allowed period) are favorites for winter range bulls and they get drove on every night while G&F are sleeping. Pinetop office have some serious enforcers under Mike but 24/7 isn't in the budget. just gotta hope those bulls drop in the malpai canyons and the vertical slopes so i can find one or two. lee buying horn-sheds only-928 537 0599

Do you have a "Tack Driver"?
biglakejake replied to azhuntnut's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
bump this up some.....doesn't every hunter/shooter on here have a favorite rifle story? or maybe a regret? i reaaaaaally want to tell you about that shot on the 2006 bull but.............no one but Lark would believe a 60 year old Winchester could do it...... lee -

Do you have a "Tack Driver"?
biglakejake replied to azhuntnut's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
A good friend-Lakeside outfitter and Blue Range wrangler Riney Maxwell-had a rifle he called the 'radar gun'. He said anybody who carried it could throw it up in the air with string a attached to the trigger and when the string came tight the biggest bull-or coues buck-in sight would be dead. I tried to buy it but got nowhere... I think it was a mauser '98 in .270. lee ps I have a couple Pre64's that shoot into half-an-inch but the operator can't always shoot that good...... -
Located only 45 minutes from Traverse City and 2 hours from Lansing, Deer Tracks Ranch sets nestled in the remote wilds of Northern Michigan. Bounded by the acclaimed trout waters of The Big Manistee river, Deer Tracks remains one of the most pristine and unbroken tracks in the lower peninsula. Venturing into this unique wilderness by itself is spellbinding, but when populated for years with genetically superior elk fed a scientific antler-growing diet, the impact on most hunters is downright staggering. got a serious case of nausea from proud farmers like this...elk farmers...

OOOH man whata' buck!! congrats all around!! lee -
i will never forget one evening down in 36a-the last day of the jr deer hunt in 2000. i had parked the truck and sent the kid out with 'last day-don't come back to camp without a buck' and started glassing the hill sides. heard something behind me and turned to find a fellow in all black, web gear, mp5 and a sidearm. identified himself as border patrol, tracked around my truck, when i told him my son was hunting up the draw he said he already knew that, and just as the sun settled behind the baboquivaris' he walked off to the east into a roadless mesquite canyon towards the sierritas....... just then there was the sound of a .257 Roberts going off and had to get busy so did not think about it what with having to get a buck out in the dark. a few years later i read an article on the border troubles and some agents called 'shadow wolves'. solitary trackers out all night long chasing the mules. would not want that job. lee

Frustrated with groups
biglakejake replied to gonhntn's topic in Muzzleloader hunting for Coues Deer
after years of very poor consistency with various muzzleloaders i am hopeful that i finally have something that works. always get 3 inch or less groups at 100 yds using 2 777 pellets and a 245gr powerbelt. just as good with the 295 gr but have not shot any 348's yet. i have an early CVA maghunter. i do a full strip and clean with hot water asap. lee -
if you are going to be up at hawley this weekend forget about coues and muleys and don't forget your earplugs if you want to sleep. the bulls FINALLY are gettin' that luvin' U feelin and making constant noise. not supposed to video, photo or stalk those big bulls so just enjoy the concert i guess. try glassing off hiway 60 at milepost 260 if you con't get your mind off whitetails.... lee

just a little note since i do not know a single unit 1 hunter this year. at least for mule deer. the area around sierra montosa along hiway 60 would be GREAT place to look for a MATURE mule deer buck or three....like 10 years of MATURITY..... good luck lee

you are on the right track. " I have noticed the 300 is a little off and 400 and 500 is definitely not correct" for the huge generalities like standard and magnum the reticle has some limited value. but to be really accurate-as in placing a lethal round in a coues deers' ribcage-there is no substitute for putting practice rounds on target. whether you use holdover or the rangefinding points in the scope remember to shoot at those ranges with many practice rounds. i zero my coues rifle at 400yds and know what the drop is at 450 and 474 because of the holes i see in the paper. burns a lot of powder but i have confidence in the shot every time i squeeze the trigger. the qualifier is that i would not attempt any long shots if i did not have a quality laser rangefinder to get me an accurate range. lee

i have the december 31 tag also. hoping for serious activity after christmas-that is when i will head down for a week. i have seen whitetails run across hiway 70 at geronimo but most of them stay higher of course. probably will work the eastern edges of the santa theresas'. with a full scale el nino forecast we could get some serious weather that will get the rut going. fingers n toes all crossed. lee biglakejake@hotmail.com

White Mountain Apache Tribe Elk Hunt
biglakejake replied to Coueser's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
' any ' wmat unit means you can hunt east or west of highway 60 and there are no shortage of rags anywhere. a quick tag fill would be around maverick and pacheta lake. best wild country hunt would be on limestone ridge on the west end north of cbq. a westside hunt will give you the opportunity to look at monster bulls like no where else in the milky way. luck, lee -
have had very good success on the west side of the sierritas...palo alto ranch south to the airivaca road has been the best for us since about '93. we were chasing muleys and the whitetail tags we drew went unfilled. lee

if you live in superior there are lots of serious coues hunters within a mile of your home. 1) best glass. 2) steepest canyons. 3) hittin' the trail in the weeeeeeeeeeee-est hours to get to that overlook. sure you want to learn about hunting coues deer?????????????????????? lee insanity runs in the family-it practically gallups!

velocity and 'shock' are not effective at killing very tenacious-of-life big game animals including deer. what counts-kills-is wound channel and blood loss due to penetration. the sectional density and weight retention of a quality 100 grain .243 projectile is the minimum that has proven effective over the last 50 or so years. the first coues deer i helped dress out at 15 was riddled with eleven 22/250 bullets. go with a bolt action rifle-and spend all the money. try .257 roberts, .260 remington and 7mm/08 if versatility like varmints-to-elk is being considered. lee yea just my opinion.

yes lets see it! the only monster bull i saw dead this year was at the grocery store in clay springs in the back of a white dodge truck. 383 "Clay Mine Bull". but the only CWT sticker around was in the window of my cherokee. no pics. lee
