    Avet Reels

Made in the USA versus China and would be a primary reason to go Avet. Avets are more user friendly to clean/maintain for the average guy too. I own an Avet HX Raptor and one of the newer Fathom 40NLD2, as well as variety of smaller Avets and one of the older Fathom 25n 2 speed They are all excellent. The Raptor is superior but it also costs at least $200 more than a Fathom. If you are in PHX go to Phoenix Fishing Supply on 16th & Camelback. They sell Avet & Penn and have an excellent selection of saltwater rods.

Deep Sea Fishing Out of San Diego

It is a good problem to have on a private boat with friends, not with an open party when not only the other anglers but also the captain and crew need to move on and find more fish.

Deep Sea Fishing Out of San Diego

Verdehunter, i’m assuming this is a new type of fishing for you? if it is rent tackle from H&M, 100%. you could easily spend more than the cost of the trip on a pair of rods and reels, and if you are going to bring gear on a 3 Day you want at least 3 outfits. i’d rent and watch and see what the other anglers are using and take the opportunity to learn about reels and rods, settings, line capacity, drag, etc. if you like this type of fishery, you will have some knowledge from the trip about what type of rods and reels you want to buy when you do it again. I would buy some flouro carbon as they won’t give that to you with your rental…40#-80#… if you can afford to go bigger do it. I would buy 2-4 jigs flatfall style or knife jigs, 180-250grams, 4-6 torpedo 5-10ounce torpedo sinkers with rubber bands, and a variety of hooks…#2-2/0. As another member said, practice knots for a week or more ahead of the trip. The San Diego jam knot is the preferred leader to hook or Lure connection. The Palomar or a good old fisherman‘s a.k.a. Trilene knot also work fine in that application. it’s also wise to be proficient with a line the line knot or two. If you’re connecting mono to Flouro, a surgeons knot works fine and is quick/easy. For leader to braid, I personally like the Alberto knot but there’s half a dozen or more that will work. unless you’re planning on driving back to AZ with your fish, I would call fish processor now and make a reservation. Fishermans and 5 Star are the gotos… Feel free to PM me if you like, I am not an expert at anything, but I do several 3 day trips a year out of San Diego.

    Leupold VX-II 3-9x40

SOLD Circa 2011 Leupold VXII 3-9x40 with Duplex Reticle. Around 2012 the scope took a 3' drop from my safe to laminate flooring...pics demonstrate the ding in the objective bell. It's cosmetic. Scope has a "stoney point" turret, no zero stop. Scope is in used condition and glass is good/no scratches. Noticed when removing scope the tube has some marring from rings, which is surprising since the rings were at 18inch/pounds. Scope was used on an older .270 Rem 700 and hunted with on a couple of general pig hunts in years pa SOLD Also have a pair of low Leupold PRW rings for $25. Would trade for H1000, R22, H4350 or Retumbo Scope is in Tucson. Won't ship but will be in Casa Grande this Sat PM (4.8). Thanks for looking.

    SOLD

sold… For Sale in Tucson, midtown, but in the Sonoita area frequently too. FN Mauser Action with a heavy fluted 23" Hart Barrel, plus the brake (makes it more like 25"). 1:10 Twist, Bold Trigger, bedded in a Bell & Carlson Medalist stock with 20 MOA EGW rail. Yankee Hill brake is threaded for a suppressor. Weighs 9.4 pounds minus a scope, round count is sub-300 and it shoots sub MOA with the right load (and shooter). I got the barrelled action from another member several years ago and put this together. Intent was to be a dedicated target rifle and it performs well in that role. I'm just not shooting it... I'm not a Mauser expert but my understanding is the action is an FN Model 1950, standard 98 action, and the "ABL" is a combination of "AB" for "Armee Belgique" and "BL" for "Belge Leger", meaning "Belgian Army" in French and Flemish, the two official languages of Belgium. The "B" with a crown is for Baudouin, who was King of Belgium (correctly "King of the Belgians") at the time. $800 and will include some brass and 20 or so hand loads I have left for it. Scope/bipod in pic not included, but I have a Zeiss Conquest (circa 2010) 4-14x50 1" tube with target turrets I might include for more cash if someone was interested in a scoped package. Not looking for trades but if someone makes an offer on a quality sporter weight bolt in .308 or a cool lever gun I might not say no. Thanks for looking.

    Card Hits!

Anyone else fortunate enough to pull a tag have their portal change from showing a tag number to saying "no tag"? That's what is happening now for me for elk, had AZGFD charges on my CC for two tags and for the last few days the portal said tags 360/361, now nada.

    Line counters

Are you going to troll and just need to know how deep you are? If so Just use the distance from your reel to the first guide…probs 12-18” depending on your rod…and count pulls to achieve desired depth. Skookum anglers might give you a funny look rocking a coffee grinder, but they will approve of the counting pulls method. Colored braided line can be confusing to keep track of if fishing is hot, but another idea is to run white or yellow main line braid (heavy, 80-100+#) and use a sharpie marker to note distance every 25/50/100 feet as needed, then just tie your leader to the braid. I do this with my BFT tuna reels and it works with jigs and sinker bait rigs.

    General Hunt Weather Report

IMO hunting pigs while there is heavy rain is a waste of time. Hunting pigs right after a storm can be very productive. If its just stupid windy, traditional glassing may not be highly effective, look for washes/breaks from the wind and still hunt them or glass/move till you find them.
