    Rage Broadheads

The rage heads will kill an elk, in the 90's as bows got faster and fixed broadheads couldn't keep up accuracy wise out to the distances now attainable, mechanicals had an accuracy advantage and therefore a distance advantage. We killed elk with slower bows and not as good mechs than the rage. The question wasn't can a rage kill an elk, it was, is a rage head better than a fixed head because of the speed I'm shooting. The answer is no, it's not. And I have tested rages to slick tricks. If all someone had was rages I wouldn't tell them they couldn't kill an elk. Kent

    Rage Broadheads

With the advent of accurate fix blade heads, there is no longer an advantage with mechs. You have a bow that shoots fast but now are going to lose penetration because of the mech head, just gave up any advantage. Might as well shoot a slower bow with a fixed, it will penetrate better. Kent

    What arrow is better.

How close are you to being spined correctly? What's your draw wt and arrow length? Being grossly under or over spined is never good, there's no way to really tune your bow. You have to let your setup determine your arrow spine, can't change your bow to just any arrow. Of course if your max distance is short, like 30 yds, anything will work. Kent

    What arrow is better.

I can get them for 15.00 LESS than the pse, 70.00 compared to 85.00, that's for shafts with nocs and inserts included. Kent

    What arrow is better.

The Pse predator is a fine arrow. The Gold tip should be an XT hunter not the expedition, specs out the same as the pse and still a little less money. I have never tried the eastons, I'm just too cheap. I have the Pse and Gold tips, both shoot well if you get the correct spine for your setup. Lately it's been the GT's because I can get them for 15.00 less for a dozen shafts. Kent

    23 November

This is actually a nice hunt if you have the time and are willing to get back in some rough country. The bach bull groups are in the same places everyday when you find them, having the patience to wait them out for a shot opportunity is the key. There are slopes that always have bulls on them everyday during the winter, year to year, for at least the 15 or so years I've been observing. I would still be hunting this hunt but have decided to wait for one more rut tag. When it gets closer to your hunt and if you still need help let me know. Good luck, Kent

Drawn for 1st rifle hunt unit 23

Are you talking first rifle as in the nov/dec hunts or as in sept/oct. Even the nov/dec tags are one of the best tags in the state. If you are willing to get back in and pack them out, nice bulls are there to be had. Kent

    Broadheads for elk?

  10. A guide means a person that is: Licensed by the state of Az. Signs a contract for sevices for hire even if payment is not paid but services were supplied. A hunt is considered Guided if a person: Accepts any compensation that directly benefits themselves or their business through advertising rights, sponserships, promotional rights, videos, products, using the hunt images of another's tagged animal. This does not include personal tags or immediate family. A hunt is considered Guided if: money or items of value are exchanged for aiding or assisting any person to locate or take wildlife, beyond the average family/friend outing and no more than $400.00 of compensation beyond actual personal expences. If you accept money or compensation beyond personal expences plus $400.00 for info on locating or taking an individual animal, a guide license is required. This is directed at finders fees. The 400.00 is much like the 750.00 that a small contractor can legally make in Az without being licensed by the state. I know this isn't perfect but it would seem to cure some of the issues, and still allow those that hunt with their families and friends to be taken out to dinner and given a small gift for helping out. Or a High school kid making a few bucks scouting. It would also not allow someone to claim they weren't guiding for cash and then make money off the images through advertising and promotions. Just needs to be spelled out in more detail than what is being proposed right now. These is just some thoughts. Kent

    twist

To figure twist for a specific bullet there is the Greenhill formula, for the average guy wanting to customize his hunting gun to one specific light for caliber or heavy for caliber bullet, the quality barrel makers will figure it out for you when you order. Light or heavy is a general rule, length is really the deciding factor. 7mm bullets - 1. 139gr hndy 2. 120gr tsx 3. 120gr nbt 4. 120gr v-max 5. 140gr tsx You can see that the 120 gr bullets I have are the same length as the 139 gr hndy, my 7mm's shoot the 139 well and do the same with the longer 120s. I haven't had as good of luck with the shorter cup and core 120s. You can see that the 140gr tsx is quite a bit longer and shoots well also. Most factory 7mm rifles have a faster twist to stabilize a long 175 gr bullet. If you shoot med to heavy bullets the factory twist works well. If you only shoot light to med and want a new barrel, slowing down the twist would be best. Looking at the 2 tsx bullets, and how long they are for their weight. It shows why a light for caliber tsx shoots so well in factory twist that is designed for what most guys shoot, mid weight for caliber bullets. This is a simple example for a simple guy like me, the experts can get more indepth. Kent

    Jaguar Collared in SO AZ

They actually snared it. I would guess either it was already sick and that's why it came in to a bait pile or the drugs affected it's kidneys. I also would like to know what the original blood samples show. I was interested in what info they could get and if they could link him to other unknown cats in the area. Kent
  21. 7 mag is on hold so someone can have a look see. Kent
  22. Primers & Powder SPF, Thanks. Kent
  23. CouesFanatic, I knew the 243 would be the first to generate interest. I've had this gun since new, it was the hardest one to put up for sale. I told myself I could only keep 3 rifles(how many does a, primarily bow hunter, need) I kept my original 3006, 338 and my wifes 7mm08, so there it is. It is the best shooting rifle I have ever shot. I was at Usery one time and shooting it in between my other guns. After I picked up my targets one of the old dogs came down and asked if it was a 22-250, I said no a 243. He said , I used to have the 788 in 22-250 and it was a shooter, which target is from that one? I showed him a one inch black square that was shot out with only one hole barely touching the edge. He asked, how many shots? I told him 10, he just smiled and said, yep they sure are shooters. My son-in-law's best friend shot his first ever coues with it last nov, he had never hunted in his life. My daughter would out shoot the guys off the tailgate during our practice sessions and wink at me when they oohed and ahhed over her groups. Anyway, a great starter gun and fun for beginners to learn on or hunt with. I do have some ammo for it. Kent
