    2 bulls n 2 days (4a & 22n)

Everyone knows how tough it can be hunting elk alone without any help. So with that being said I had two friends hunting alone in two different units at the same time. One in 4a and one in 22N. My friend in 4a was going to have help on Sunday afternoon, but my buddie in 22N was solo the entire time. I went with my friend in 4a first and arrived in his camp opening morning and it was cold! 4 degrees so my truck indicated. This was the first time in 4a hunting rifle, most of my experience in there has been during the archery season. The spot I took him to was a war zone, road hunter after road hunter driving all the two tracks and shots going off everwhere. My friend told me he was looking for a nice 5x5 or better. As it started getting lighter I glassed a nice 5x out in the flats about a mile out. We decided to get closer for a better look, and as we approached closer some road hunters jumped the entire herd and spooked the bull out. That bull was shot by a young boy and it was his first. It was a nice 5x and good for him. That evening we went to a different spot to get away from some of the road hunting. We spotted a herd of 20 and another 5x was with the herd. My buddie told me he wanted to go for him. As light was fading we got within 460 yards, he took another look and decided to take him. His shot was true with his 308 and he got his bull. After we packed out the bull, which was easy due to the location, I headed off to 22N to help my other friend. I arrived in camp that evening and asked if he has seen anything. He told me no not even a cow. I asked what type of bull he was looking for and he told me anything better than a spike. He was wanting that tasty elk meat. I am use to glassing and the only spot I was familiar with in 22n was the control road. I know how crowded that road is with hunters, but I thought if I could glass one up we would be in business. That following morning after I arrived in his camp we started to glass the control road area and I spotted a 4x5 with some cows 3/4 the way up the ridge. I asked my friend if he wanted to try for him and I explained to him how difficult the pack out will be if he got it. He told me he was game. We stalked to withing 200 yards and his shot was true. This pack out was tough. He shot him at 1030 and we were finished with the entire elk and back at the truck at 8pm. Not the biggest bulls but it was great time hunting, except the cold. Enjoy.

    Desert Mulies

Well I have been helping out a few of my friends the last 6 days of the 42 gen hunt and doing scouting for my daughters Jr hunt in there as well. Opening morning we glassed up 5 bucks, nothing bigger thatn a 2x2. The second morning 4 more bucks, one little fork and the rest spikes. The third day a decent 3x4 and a 2x2, but a failed stalk. On tuesday went to my honey hole I was saving for my daughter, and helped my friend take his first buck ever. This was his first ever deer hunt. A small 3x4, but he had a blast and learned tons. Glassed him up at 1300 yds and closed the distance to 230 when he took the shot. Good luck on the Jr hunt.

    Desert Mulies

As one of the other members posted, its a lot tougher than the other Jr hunts due to the general season running 2 weeks before the Jr. My daughter had a tag in there the last 2 years, and in 08 she took a 3x3, and last year I scouted for her before the general season and saw plenty of deer and some bucks, but once her hunt arrived they were gone due to the general hunt. We did eventually on the last day glass a group of 5 bucks running together and she had one standing broadside at 350, but it was too far for her. She dosent like all the hiking but really likes glassing for deer, we have done that for both the morning and evening , then during lunch since everything is so close we hit Wickenburg for some chow. She has a tag this year also and I have been watching a group of bucks, but I probably wont be back in there scouting until after the general, and see what they do.

    Some photos

Did not get an elk, my friends had a cow tag, and it was a very small area to hunt in. I think there were approx. 80 tags, half were for any elk and the other half was cow only. With the small area to hunt in and the word out of the only water was on the west sunset mtns, there were plenty of other hunters in the area. We did glass up some big herds and some bulls, but all were across diablo canyon and were not in the unit. We still had a good time, and took care of some coyote problems.

    Desert deer

I have been scouting lately for the upcoming november hunts, general and youth, and have been seeing some nice desert bucks better than last year. Last week glassed up a herd of 8 running together. Just want to see what everyone else is noticing in the desert. I just hope is cools off a little, I dont want it to be 106 in November. Good luck on your upcoming hunts

Help or Advice for Unit 17B

keep up with the scouting the areas you mentioned are both good. I took my daughter in that unit on her first Jr deer hunt and we had a blast. The tonto rd area is good but lots of private property. A little south of tonto rd is ferguson valley rd. from that road there are plenty of small two track quad trails to get away from the private prop and will lead you into good glassing country on the national forest. On our scouts prior to the hunt we only found does but stayed in those areas during the hunt and found the bucks. Good luck, Jr hunts are the best.

    Scouting alone

I seem to find more or see more when scouting alone. I'll be doing some scouting tomorrow near winslow, east and west sunset mts. Scouting for some friends on their upcoming cow hunt. Its their first hunt ever. Was just waiting for the early archery and rifle hunts to end. As far as fossil springs tons of hippies checking out those blue/green springs. Must be something in the water.

    Remingtion SPS Tactical .308

Buy the newer version, the one pictured runs 589, for 20 dollars more, you can buy the same rifle with the threaded barrel and the new triger that is externally adjustable. I just purchased it last month and it has the green ghillie stock. I just ordered my zeiss and waiting for it to come in to mount it. Im setting mine up for lets say the end of the world type scenerio, but will use it for hunting. I forgot to mention, it has a 1/10 inch twist and this rifle is a military/LE set up with the heavy 20in barrell, i would assume with that twist rate the heavier bullets, 168-180 will perform better at longer distances and less likely to tumble. My friend has the same version you pictured and he loves it, he uses it for elk and deer. He just put a middle end nikon on he tells me he likes it alot.

    Unit 6a

Dont apalogize about helping someone out who hasnt been drawn in 10 years. I think some here were upset at me because I did give some specific directions. If hackberry basin was such a sweet spot or honey hole, you would think I would have ran into another hunter there during the hunt. In which I didnt during the 7 day hunt. Oh I did run into one, the day prior to opener. Some times I wonder what the purpose of some forums are for. Just bragging boards, or to bloat how good you are? If you cant help someone out on here in the open, and only in private (pm) whats the point. Im just saying. Good luck on your 6A hunt. Im trying to save you some time, money, gas, and get you started in one spot were you can glass up some deer the day you get there, instead of scouting for days and hours without seeing anything.

    Unit 6a

I hunted this unit once, and scored on a 106inch buck you see in my avatar, and my brother-in-law took a 90 inch buck on the same hunt, both bucks droped within 50 yards of each other and shot seconds apart. Anyway, take the fossil springs road, south from 260 approx. 7.8 miles and you will see a small two track road that leads into hackbarry basin. A great spot to glass all day. That is where we took the bucks. That is the only area I scouted and succeeded in 2008. It was the second hunt in november. Good luck

    muzzle brake

I am looking for help with a muzzle brake. I purchased a remington 700sps tactical in 308. It has a threaded barrell in 5/8x24 threads and having a hard time finding a muzzle brake to fit that will just screw on. I ordered one online at nelson tactical but its for a AR-10 type barrel and did not fit all the way on. I've checked brownels, midway ect but was wondering if anyone here has purchased one for their remington and put it on. Thanks

    San Carlos, Unit C, August

Unit C has bear all over, just find a good glassing spot, and food source you should see 3-6 bears a day. When the prickly pear was not ripe, we had great success sitting on tanks and doing a little calling. Good luck, its a great hunt, been up there the last 3 years hunting in C, and every year our parties have 100 percent success, when havent had tag go unfilled. Just be prepared for mud, and mud if its a good monsoon this year.
  23. Here is an interesting article from a state senator, wonder why the left media has not showed this?? I’m Arizona State Senator Sylvia Allen. I want to explain SB 1070 for which I voted yes. Rancher Robert Krentz was murdered by the drug cartel on his ranch a month ago. I participated in a senate hearing two weeks ago on the border violence, here is just some of the highlights from those who testified. The people who live within 60 to 80 miles of the Arizona/Mexico Border have for years been terrorized and have pleaded for help to stop the daily invasion of humans who cross their property . One Rancher testified that 300 to 1200 people a DAY come across his ranch vandalizing his property, stealing his vehicles and property, cutting down his fences, and leaving trash. In the last two years he has found 17 dead bodies and two Koran bibles. Another rancher testified that daily drugs are brought across his ranch in a military operation. A point man with a machine gun goes in front, 1/2 mile behind are the guards fully armed, 1/2 mile behind them are the drugs, behind the drugs 1/2 mile are more guards. These people are violent and they will kill anyone who gets in the way. This was not the only rancher we heard that day that talked about the drug trains. One man told of two illegal’s who came upon his property one shot in the back and the other in the arm by the drug runners who had forced them to carry the drugs and then shot them. Daily they listen to gun fire during the night it is not safe to leave his family alone on the ranch and they can’t leave the ranch for fear of nothing being left when they come back. The border patrol is not on the border. They have set up 60 miles away with check points that do nothing to stop the invasion. They are not allowed to use force in stopping anyone who is entering. They run around chasing them, if they get their hands on them then they can take them back across the border. Federal prisons have over 35% illegal’s and 20% of Arizona prisons are filled with illegal’s. In the last few years 80% of our law enforcement that have been killed or wounded have been by an illegal. The majority of people coming now are people we need to be worried about. The ranchers told us that they have seen a change in the people coming they are not just those who are looking for work and a better life. The Federal Government has refused for years to do anything to help the border states . We have been over run and once they are here we have the burden of funding state services that they use. Education costs have been over a billion dollars. The healthcare cost billions of dollars. Our State is broke, $3.5 billion deficit and we have many serious decisions to make. One is that we do not have the money to care for any who are not here legally. It has to stop. The border can be secured. We have the technology and we have the ability to stop this invasion. We must know who is coming and they must come in an organized manner legally so that we can assimilate them into our population and protect the sovereignty of our country. We are a nation of laws. We have a responsibility to protect our citizens and to protect the integrity of our country and the government which we live under. I would give amnesty today to many, but here is the problem, we dare not do this until the Border is secure. It will do no good to give them amnesty because thousands will come behind them and we will be over run to the point that there will no longer be the United States of America but a North American Union of open borders. I ask you what form of government will we live under? How long will it be before we will be just like Mexico , Canada or any of the other Central American or South American country? We have already lost our language, everything must be printed in Spanish. We have already lost our history, it is no longer taught in our schools, and we have lost our borders. The leftist media has distorted what SB 1070 will do. It is not going to set up a Nazi Germany. Are you kidding? The ACLU and the leftist courts will do everything to protect those who are here illegally, but it was an effort to try and stop illegal’s from setting up businesses, and employment, and receiving state services and give the ability to local law enforcement when there is probable cause, like a traffic stop, to determine if they are here legally. Federal law is very clear, if you are here on a visa you must have your papers on you at all times. That is the law. In Arizona all you need to show you are a legal citizen is a driver license, MVD identification card, Native American Card, or a Military ID. This is what you need to vote or get a hunting license. So nothing new has been added to this law. No one is going to be stopped walking down the street. The Socialists who are in power in DC are angry because we dare try and do something. The Socialists wants us to just let them come. They want the “Transformation” to continue. Maybe it is too late to save America . Maybe we are not worthy of freedom anymore. But as an elected official I must try to do what I can to protect our Constitutional Republic . Living in America is not a right just because you can walk across the border. Being an American is a responsibility and it comes by respecting and upholding the Constitution, the law of our land, which says what you must do to be a citizen of this country. FREEDOM IS NOT FREE. Senator Sylvia Allen .

  25. I think the Hopi hunts are a crock of you know what. Looks like the Tribal members dont want to pay for the permits, nor do I blame them. Have you seen the prices for us to hunt on their lands, bs, why dont we charge them fees like they do us, besides why would they want to pay for tags, when some nations they get them free or very discounted. All I see is that for those units our tags were taken away for what? Working relations to retain some land. Just my thought.
