    Blinds and Scent

They can smell better then a whitetail in my opinion. I also think it would help to get your blind up ahead of time. I had your tag a couple years ago. I had 3 bucks running together and on opening morning the two small ones came in to 20 yards and watered, but the big one stayed at 83 yards the whole time, bedded down at that distance for 3 hours, then got up and walked over the hill out of my life forever. I would've shot but I thought for sure when he got up he'd water as it was hot as HECK! (you'll see!). He ended up getting killed by a muzzy hunter and scored 87". It rained 3.5" the next morning, so I was stuck with spot and stalk the rest of the hunt, ended up with a 79 6/8" buck (in my avatar). Fun hunt, but they will wind you, and they can be scared of blinds, if you have no choice, then get after em.

    Hunting Muleys with a 7.62x39

That'll knock em dead. Run your ballistics and set your max range at wherever your energy drops below 800 ft/lbs or it goes beyond your comfortable accuracy range.

    Scope Magnification for Variable Scopes

I think more Importantly look at the variable "range". Such as, a 3-9 has a 3x range. A 6-24 a 4x range. I look for a scope with at least 5x range, like a 3-15. Best of both worlds then. They make scopes with up to 6.5x range so you can get a 4.5-30. This is a fairly new deal, but most scope makers are figuring out that people want them and they are making more and more high zoom scopes. I prefer 20 power for shots beyond 300 yards, but would never go with a 6.5-20 on a big game rifle. That's just too much power for close moving shots, and let's be honest, for every 600 yard cross canyon shot I've made, I've shot an animal running through brush at 50 yards.

Any word on what unit he came out of? I have a pic of a bull from last summer that looks alot like that one.
  8. Make sure you format your card in the camera with the remote, not just clearing it on the computer, I dont know why that is, but it resets the card or something. Set it at 3MP and 1 shot every 20 or 30 seconds and you wont miss to much with it and you'll get 3000 or more pics easily. I have 6 covert II's and they have black remotes and will take 4GB cards, guess I got lucky and got later ones.

  10. Rage makes a 125gr. crossbow head with a 1 3/4" cut. It has a slightly deeper retaining groove for crossbow energy, but works awesome with vertical bows. Screw them on, leave your sights, kill stuff, that simple. I've killed a pretty good pile of stuff with them so far and love them, I'll NEVER go back to fixed blades. They'll go right through shoot through mesh as well.

    Smoking trout

Be sure to roll it good and tight and don't puff to deep the first couple of drags. I prefer a clip to hold it so I can smoke every last bit.

How long does meat last in the freezer?

A good alternative to plastic wrap is the cheap plastic bags from walmart. I'm talking the really cheap ones, they should be 99 cents for 100 or so. They are just standard super thin bags about a gallon in size that are super thin, just like plastic wrap. They are wothless for anything other then wrapping meat cuz they are too thin, but drop your meat in it, spin it till its tight, then double wrap in freezer paper. I like to put all cuts in the baggies first, then go back and wrap that way I keep the my bloody hands off the freezer paper and it looks nicer.

    NM antelope help

There's some big ones in there, best in the country with the exception of maybe AZ, but that's arguable. How big is your ranch? If you have a good chunk, I wouldn't shoot anything short of 82" or so.

    Wtb 7mm08 rifle

Haha... sorry, it was a joke, he's a notorious 7mm-08 hater. I don't know if he's even on the site anymore? Anyhow, sorry to get your hopes up! I have a cute little Browning A-bolt 300 WSM that I'd sell you, it's a really small gun, 22" barrel. You could get with someone who reloads and load up some reduced power 150gr. for it to duplicate 7mm-08 ballistics and you'd always be able to go higher with it. I'd take $450 for it, its a little bit dinged up, but a good hunting rifle. Only problem is I'm in ND so I'd have to ship it.

I think Lark has one for sale. PM him.
  18. I use what the law allows. If you are a true purist, a .54 Renegade is too easy, you should use a compound bow... but if you are a true purist you shouldn't use a compound you should use a recurve.... but wait, if you are a true purist, you should use a spear, or rather, just your fists..... Anyhow, I use the most lethal weapon the law will allow me, I apply for muzzy tags all the time and hunt with them annually because draw odds/season dates etc are better. You can't go wrong with a T/C. I would STRONGLY recommend going with an encore as the accuracy is better then the Omega, not sure why but I haven't heard of an Encore that won't shoo the lights out. They used to b considerably more expensive then the omegas, but the encore FX is the same gun just not compatible with centerfire barrels, and sells for $499 at sportsmans. Best buy for sure. I second (or third or fourth) the Blackhorn 209. Good luck and have fun!

I need to buy a 4x4 pickup (prefer in Phoenix)

Hey Matt, thanks for your service! I don't have a line on a truck, but be sure to get an application in for coues deer on Ft. Huachuca before the deadline in early June. If you don't apply for rifle, then you can only bowhunt the OTC hunt. If you need info PM me. Tags are very easy to draw.
  22. I just wanted to drop a thank you to all the CWT members for all the knowledge I picked up over the past 4 years here. When I found out I got into dental school in AZ I remember thinking, well I guess I can hunt rattlesnakes and scorpions for 4 years. I never dreamt I'd find the hunting opportunities I did here! I couldn't have done it without all the help I received from all the members here! The draw gods in NM and AZ were pretty good to me while I was here, and I found that I enjoyed scouting considerably more then dental school, so I burned plenty off gas chasing desert critters around! I never thought I'd be sad on the day I get to move back, but I'm sitting here with my gear packed and ready to go (including a pretty good pile of mounts and sheds I'm bringing back north with me and I"m having mixed feelings about leaving! I'm not gonna miss the summers here in the valley, but I will miss everything else about this great place. I met a lot of cool people through this site and while out hunting, a lot of whom I'll keep in touch with and look forward to sharing more hunts with in the future. If anyone needs any info or help on anything up in the Dakotas, look me up, I'll still be floating around the forums dreaming of the day when I can come back and stick another javelina or bugle up another one of AZ's amazing bulls. Since everyone on here loves picks, I thought I'd throw up some pics of some of the critters that are gonna be making the trek north with me on the wall or in the freezer! Thanks again everyone!!! This is no doubt the best hunting forum I've ever been a part of! The best part is, they're actually gonna let me be a dentist too!!!! Ft.
