Remington .221 Fireball
yotebuster replied to Couestracker's topic in Handgun Hunting for Coues Deer
I’ve wanted one of those since I was a kid!! Ultimate HAM gun!! -
If they’re willing to say it’s benign without having biopsied it, it’s highly unlikely it’s malignant. Typically if there’s any remote chance of something being malignant they will not say benign as they don’t want to be wrong. The biopsy is more just a standard of care on any abnormal growth these days. It’s always a good wake up call to make sure you’re living life the way you should be, but from the sound of it she’s gonna be fine.

Steel on Quail
yotebuster replied to Roboz's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
If you’re gonna switch to steel try 7’s instead. I’ve been shooting federal 2 3/4” 7’s at 1350fps for decoying ducks for a few years now and it’s a wicked load. Birds are killed by a pellet to the wing or CNS, not body shots so the more you can get in the air the better. I wish they made 7’s in lead in the US, I think it would be the ultimate pheasant and grouse load. I’ve got some game bore 7’s in lead but a European 7 is more like a US 8 so I’ve actually found that European 6’s (which is like an American 7) are ideal for pheasants under 50 yards. -
I’m so lost with this post? Is it about the big bull? A video of the big bull(alive or dead) or is it about a marginally gay cat? Wtf is going on here?
-
Isn’t the FOV extra tiny on those 18’s?

Pre-fab turret + factory loads + stock rifle isn’t a good recipe for 1000+ yards. Way too many variables when you get that far. If you get set up with a legit ranging system (sig kilo abs or similar) can find a load (or find someone to find a load for you) that groups 1/2-3/4 Moa and then shoot the heck out of it it’s possible, but “custom” turrets and a sighted in rifle aren’t the answer in this case.

If you’re hunting in that unit for elk where you can see more then 100 yards you aren’t in the right spot in November.
-
Not sure if he’s joking here or not but he’s actually right on the money in that unit. Take a highlighter to your map and highlight 1 mile out on every open FS trail. Now take another highlighter and highlight what remains. The answer is exceptionally small in that unit. Get the wind in your face and a scope that is at very max 3x on the bottom end and slowly walk through it. Enough bulls in there where if you do that right in the areas I’m talking about you’ll kill one in a day.

Archery Sandhill Crane Questions
yotebuster replied to a topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
I think he actually has an archery only tag. I wouldn’t necessarily say you’d want large shot for cranes. 4’s would be the ideal size for anything 60 yards and less. -
Bow or rifle? Both tough but one is really really tough.

Archery Sandhill Crane Questions
yotebuster replied to a topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
You are correct!!! I’m eating my words. I’ve shot hundreds of them in several different states and provinces and from what I can see AZ is a loophole if you will to not require non toxic shot. They don’t fall under federal regs for non toxic shot, but do for baiting, magazine capacity etc. Most states and provinces have state laws I guess on the non toxic deal. Weird. You could rip them up with 3” #4 lead!!! -
Archery Sandhill Crane Questions

Hopefully people weren’t actually using lead #2’s as that’s been outlawed for 30 years. I cranes have a pretty good amount of fluff, they’re feathers don’t wrap up on pellets near as much as a goose though. My guess is they just hit feathers only and though it was deflected. Any arrow that hits meat or bone on a crane is gonna bring it down. They are probably the easiest waterfowl to bring down pound for pound. -
I’m not sure on the new format. You could send Amanda a PM. Or maybe someone on here can chime in if they know?
-
Sent it out today USPS. Good luck with your scoutin!

7x42BA Leica Trinovids. The BA stands for Bad A$$ and they are just that. They’re used but priced accordingly. Optically they are excellent. They have the outdoorsman stud on them. Loved them for archery hunting but bought a pair of 8.5x42 el’s so they don’t get used. $400 shipped. No box.
-
Naw I’ll take care of it. Just send Amanda a little more to go towards the site.
-
I found it. You can have it and I’ll ship it to you for free if you PM me your address and maybe make a $20 or so donation to Amanda. You’ll save a few bucks, the site will get a little money, and I’ll clear out a little clutter.

Archery Sandhill Crane Questions
yotebuster replied to a topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
They have archery crane tags?!? Whoa. That’s tough. They’re tough to get to commit to decoys unless you have really good ones (deceptions or stuffers). My only thought would be decoys and letting one land. They should die about like a turkey with a bow although they are considerably smaller then a tom turkey. I use 3” 2 or 3 shot steel for them up in ND. Never shot at one with a bow though. You almost certainly can’t sneak up on them from what I’ve found, even to shotgun range so your best bet would be landing them in a field around you in a double bull or something and taking a standing shot. Maybe pass shooting with flu glue but they would have to be low in order to pull that off. -
Sorry to change up on this but I’m just gonna hold onto these for truck binos for this price.
-
I think I have one around somewhere but I have no idea where it is. I’ll look and let you know if I found it. I’d have to ship it so it might not be worth your time anyhow.

New muzzleloader... Need help!!!
yotebuster replied to Coues Archer's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I had an encore that I shot 125gr volume out of and never had an issue. I shot that thing hundreds and hundreds of times too. -

I shoot 110 weight and haven’t seen any issues yet, I did hear that the breach plugs in the remingtons are harder then the old ultimates like mine so they are rated to 160 volume. I can’t verify that though. -

I’ve only been around two of them, friends of mine who bought cva accuras against my caution. Both would only fire about 7 out of 10 times. Wouldn’t even set the primer off. Both had “stainless” barrels but they turned out to just be plated steel barrels so the bore wasn’t stainless which is important in a muzzleloader if you ask me. Can’t say that I’ve been around a new CVA but they were such a disappointment when I was around them I wouldn’t waste my time again. There’s so many better options out there I guess why risk it. -

Run away from CVA and traditions. I’d get the ultimate. I own one of the original Michigan ultimates and am having another sabot less gun built. Most guns these days will shoot 1.5-2” groups when following the weird rituals that 777 requires but to get a real long range consistent gun you’ll want to use blackhorn and get something with a rifle primer ignition source or you’ll end up banging your head against the wall. If the Remington doensnt come with a muzzle break factor one into your budget as my Michigan ultimate kicks even with a break. I shoot 110gr blackhorn by weight (about 160 by volume) with a 300gr Parker black max at 2400fps. That’s got more KE then a 30-06 with 180’s. It’s a mean rig. Used to be muzzleloaders killed more like bows by just putting a big hole in a critter. These will kill with hydraulics just like any other rifle. -
